I took my boyfriend to Reykjavik for his 30th birthday and booked the Thingholt Hotel as Expedia had a great deal and the hotel looked very chic and centrally located.

We we so impressed when we arrived - amazing decor, really friendly reception staff and from our 4th floor room stunning views over Reykjavik out of the floor to ceiling windows - this is definitely one of the best hotels I've stayed in - the rooms are fabulous with a huge bed, flat screen TV, massive bathtub and very cool decor - it seemed a shame to leave the hotel!

Breakfast was great - you help yourself but there's loads of choice (cereals, pastries, fruit, cheese, meat - pickled herrings for the adventurous!) and really set us up for the day.

Also the hotel bar in the reception area is a great place for one last drink before bed - it's really cosy and make sure you try out the reclining loungers - decadent!

Other top tips for when you're there (we visited in the depths of winter) - the Golden Circle tour is a must - we splashed out and went on an hours snowmobile tour as an added extra - so much fun and stunning scenery on the glacier. We also booked the Northern Lights tour though the same company (Grayline) and were lucky enough to see the lights on our last night. Plus make sure you get to the Blue Lagoon for a truely surreal experience - the massages are amazing as they are done in the lagoon.

One final tip - take heaps of cash - this is one expensive place!

This hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. Situated on Reykjavik's main shopping street, we were close to restaurants, stores, bars, and cafes. The hotel itself was very cutting edge in its design with salmon skin on the walls and lots of modern, although somewhat odd-looking modern furniture. Our room was extremely comfortable with a spacious bathroom, closets, seating area, and desk. There was a flat-screen TV, which we didn't watch much of, but still appreciated having. The room had its own heater, which was so nice when the wind and rain were howling outside. We also had an electric tea kettle, which we used constantly. In fact, when we ran out of tea, my husband ran down to the front desk and returned with a large assortment of tea bags.

The breakfast buffet in the morning had many choices of breads, meats, cheeses, cereals, and other things. We were very satisfied with the food.

Above all, the staff was extremely helpful and kind to us. We felt so many times that they were going out of their way to make us comfortable. The woman with the long dark hair (sorry, didn't get her name) made calls for us and let us know when our transportation would be arriving. She was proactive in taking care of our needs.

Because the weather was so terrible during the time of our stay, we spent more time than we usually would at the hotel, but we enjoyed every minute of it.

We booked this hotel for the Iceland Airwaves festival and in terms of location it was perfect. Close to the main shopping street and near all the bars, clubs and restaurants. We got a great deal on Orbitz so I can't really complain. The hotel in person does have less character than the photos on the web site. It has a cool, modern design, but the vibe falls short and often the functionality suffers. For example, our room was pretty small with a double bed for my husband and me. No big deal. But the bathroom, which looked very cool, offered very little privacy. On the plus side, the staff were friendly, the breakfast good, and free internet in the room. Also, we were on the 4th floor and could barely hear the late night partying on the street. All in all, we had a great stay. If we had paid more, we probably would have been dissapointed.

The hotel website looks good & promised a boutique/ design hotel.

We found the location of the hotel ideal, just off the main street, very handy.

The decor was nice, if a bit dark and lacking atmosphere in the reception area.

The reception from the front desk was mixed, not very helpful/ friendly at times. Other times friendly & professional, depending upon personnel on duty.

We had problems with the room - snags: tv didnt work, some lights didnt work - not what we expect from a 4 star hotel.
There was construction work of some kind taking place at the hotel so there were often work equipment & water across the reception floor!

To sum up, it wasn't what we had expected or hoped for from the hotel. Positive points, it has potential once the snags/ teething problems are fixed and a friendly welcome from reception would have made a big difference to our initial impression! Breakfast was good and the breakfast staff were friendly.

Center Hotel Thingholt has the decor/style you expect from a modern boutique hotel. If my room (415) and the lobby are an indicator, the main design element is leather - leather desk, leather decorative pillows, cowhide chair...even a leather floor! The bathroom was done in bare concrete to complete the minimalist aesthetic. It was exactly what I wanted for atmosphere.

However, the decor doesn't make up for the lack of amenities. The front desk seemed to be nothing more than a glorified security desk - couldn't help the guests in front of me with their botched tour pickup, couldn't help me arrange for a driver, barely spoke to me during check in, never said hello upon my returns to the hotel, etc. There is no room service, mini bar or lobby bar. The lighting in the bathroom is terrible for getting dressed to; there is no robe; the hair dryer was travel-sized (without traveling); and the towels are crunchy (my #1 pet peeve).

On the plus side, you are one block off the main street of shops/bars/cafes. Which means you are extremely close to all the action but can have a quiet escape/sleep when you're done. Finally, it's not terribly expensive, relatively speaking. So, maybe this is a classic case of you get what you pay for and pay for what you get? I'll have my expectations set better next time.
