My partner and I stayed at Hotel Thingholt for a week over the New Year holiday this year and thought the hotel was solid. The level and quality of decor was better than we expected for the price and the overall design was typical for a modern boutique style hotel...well designed and visually clean. Our deluxe room was large and the bathroom which was separated by a frosted glass wall was huge (even by American standards) with high grade fixtures. The reception, lobby, lounge, bar and breakfast room are below street level with cellar windows peeping out onto foot traffic. The lobby looks ready for a cocktail party that never seems to happen and has the energy of a museum. uhg.

The staff was mildly friendly when forced to be but personal phone calls and eyes glued to the monitor behind the desk when a guest walked by seemed the norm. We had a running joke about how many days we could go without a smile or eye contact...it was three.

Breakfast was ample. The first few days it seemed we were the only guests in the hotel and breakfast was simple starchy pastry and pretty thin. But, the following mornings as occupancy increased we had a nice selection of meats, breads, cheese, cereals, fruit and eggs. It was an above average spread.

We had a rental car for the week and there was plenty of parking either in free (or pay) lots down the street or on street parking in front of the hotel itself.

The bed was large, comfortable, the room was warm and decorated well, the flat screen tv got all the basics, the closets and shelving were ample for two guys for a week and the couch and lounge area gave us enough room to have cocktails in the room.

The best thing about Thingholt? The price. We are used to paying more for that grade of stay...wow...for once...something in Reykjavik that wasn't too expensive!

I took my boyfriend to Reykjavik for his 30th birthday and booked the Thingholt Hotel as Expedia had a great deal and the hotel looked very chic and centrally located.

We we so impressed when we arrived - amazing decor, really friendly reception staff and from our 4th floor room stunning views over Reykjavik out of the floor to ceiling windows - this is definitely one of the best hotels I've stayed in - the rooms are fabulous with a huge bed, flat screen TV, massive bathtub and very cool decor - it seemed a shame to leave the hotel!

Breakfast was great - you help yourself but there's loads of choice (cereals, pastries, fruit, cheese, meat - pickled herrings for the adventurous!) and really set us up for the day.

Also the hotel bar in the reception area is a great place for one last drink before bed - it's really cosy and make sure you try out the reclining loungers - decadent!

Other top tips for when you're there (we visited in the depths of winter) - the Golden Circle tour is a must - we splashed out and went on an hours snowmobile tour as an added extra - so much fun and stunning scenery on the glacier. We also booked the Northern Lights tour though the same company (Grayline) and were lucky enough to see the lights on our last night. Plus make sure you get to the Blue Lagoon for a truely surreal experience - the massages are amazing as they are done in the lagoon.

One final tip - take heaps of cash - this is one expensive place!

This hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. Situated on Reykjavik's main shopping street, we were close to restaurants, stores, bars, and cafes. The hotel itself was very cutting edge in its design with salmon skin on the walls and lots of modern, although somewhat odd-looking modern furniture. Our room was extremely comfortable with a spacious bathroom, closets, seating area, and desk. There was a flat-screen TV, which we didn't watch much of, but still appreciated having. The room had its own heater, which was so nice when the wind and rain were howling outside. We also had an electric tea kettle, which we used constantly. In fact, when we ran out of tea, my husband ran down to the front desk and returned with a large assortment of tea bags.

The breakfast buffet in the morning had many choices of breads, meats, cheeses, cereals, and other things. We were very satisfied with the food.

Above all, the staff was extremely helpful and kind to us. We felt so many times that they were going out of their way to make us comfortable. The woman with the long dark hair (sorry, didn't get her name) made calls for us and let us know when our transportation would be arriving. She was proactive in taking care of our needs.

Because the weather was so terrible during the time of our stay, we spent more time than we usually would at the hotel, but we enjoyed every minute of it.

We booked this hotel for the Iceland Airwaves festival and in terms of location it was perfect. Close to the main shopping street and near all the bars, clubs and restaurants. We got a great deal on Orbitz so I can't really complain. The hotel in person does have less character than the photos on the web site. It has a cool, modern design, but the vibe falls short and often the functionality suffers. For example, our room was pretty small with a double bed for my husband and me. No big deal. But the bathroom, which looked very cool, offered very little privacy. On the plus side, the staff were friendly, the breakfast good, and free internet in the room. Also, we were on the 4th floor and could barely hear the late night partying on the street. All in all, we had a great stay. If we had paid more, we probably would have been dissapointed.

The hotel website looks good & promised a boutique/ design hotel.

We found the location of the hotel ideal, just off the main street, very handy.

The decor was nice, if a bit dark and lacking atmosphere in the reception area.

The reception from the front desk was mixed, not very helpful/ friendly at times. Other times friendly & professional, depending upon personnel on duty.

We had problems with the room - snags: tv didnt work, some lights didnt work - not what we expect from a 4 star hotel.
There was construction work of some kind taking place at the hotel so there were often work equipment & water across the reception floor!

To sum up, it wasn't what we had expected or hoped for from the hotel. Positive points, it has potential once the snags/ teething problems are fixed and a friendly welcome from reception would have made a big difference to our initial impression! Breakfast was good and the breakfast staff were friendly.

Center Hotel Thingholt has the decor/style you expect from a modern boutique hotel. If my room (415) and the lobby are an indicator, the main design element is leather - leather desk, leather decorative pillows, cowhide chair...even a leather floor! The bathroom was done in bare concrete to complete the minimalist aesthetic. It was exactly what I wanted for atmosphere.

However, the decor doesn't make up for the lack of amenities. The front desk seemed to be nothing more than a glorified security desk - couldn't help the guests in front of me with their botched tour pickup, couldn't help me arrange for a driver, barely spoke to me during check in, never said hello upon my returns to the hotel, etc. There is no room service, mini bar or lobby bar. The lighting in the bathroom is terrible for getting dressed to; there is no robe; the hair dryer was travel-sized (without traveling); and the towels are crunchy (my #1 pet peeve).

On the plus side, you are one block off the main street of shops/bars/cafes. Which means you are extremely close to all the action but can have a quiet escape/sleep when you're done. Finally, it's not terribly expensive, relatively speaking. So, maybe this is a classic case of you get what you pay for and pay for what you get? I'll have my expectations set better next time.

We have just come back from a weeks stay at this hotel for our honeymoon and we loved it ! Its right in the center of town and the bets position of all the hotels we saw when we were there for east access to shops ect, especially as Reykjavik is very spread out and if you aren't very central you'll have lots of walking to do.

Our room was very spacious and comfortable and the staff there were very helpful with ringing taxis and helping us contact people re: day trips. The breakfast which is included in the room price is great, a big selection of cereals, breads, salamis and salads, fresh fruit, croissants and pastries and juices and hot drinks (very handy when you take in to account the cost of food and drinks over in Iceland!).

Despite being there in the Airwaves Festival week we didn't find the place noisy at all and apart from hearing the odd shower running every few days it was perfectly quiet. The room had a lovely bathroom and big flat screen tv and lots of room and character, our only niggle(and its a little one) is that we could have done with more coffee/tea sachets on our room and we only had enough for one or two cups a day.

The cleaning/ kitchen staff were very nice, polite and quiet !

We would definitely stay here again, it was ace !
