We were at the Plaza for almost a week, with a group of about 20 other people. Because our rooms were part of a group block it is difficult to be specific about the room rate value, and the the quality of the room. I have the impression that we were in the oldest, smallest section of the hotel but I don't know that for sure. I thought the cost was reasonable, and now that I know how expensive everything in Iceland is I think we probably got a great deal and the quality of the guest rooms reflected that somewhat.

The lobby, bar, and casual seating area in the common space of the hotel are really quite lovely - kind of a funky, modern style. Very conducive to sitting and chatting w/ friends, having a drink, etc... The front desk staff were unfailingly helpful, and friendly - giving great recommendations for restaurants, helping w/ tour logistics etc...

The breakfast buffet is ample, although uninspired and unchanging from one day to the next - so by the 3rd or 4th day it can get a little old. But there is plenty of fresh food and delicious breads and fresh fruit.

The guest rooms were small, not well sound-proofed, and spare in their amenities. The towels are thin, there are no drawers - just shelves, no bathmats (quite important given their bathroom set-up) and the room we were in had a large pillar in it that took up a lot of space. We also were on eye level with the HVAC units and a view of interior crumbling walls and construction. It was a particularly unappealing view. However, the other side of the hall looked out on the plaza - which was exceedingly noisy - so our view, while unattractive, did not keep us up at night the way the street noise did for people on the other side.

The bathrooms are fine, but they have tile floors and a simple swinging glass panel separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom. So when you take a shower a major portion of the bathroom floor gets wet. Without a bathmat we had to wipe the floor down after every shower so that the floor we used the rest of the day was dry.

We were a married couple and requested one bed. We got two twins pushed together, with twin size comforters, as did people who were simply room mates. The roommates had to move furniture to separate the beds. I don't know if that's the only option, or if - because we were a group - we got the bottom of the barrel for the rooms.

One major plus for us was the free in-room internet access. This was a really terrific value that we greatly appreciated. They also have a couple of computers available (free of charge) in the lobby for guest use.

The location is really fantastic (apart from the noise) - it's a 5 minute walk from the harbor and many attractions and restaurants, and a 10-15 minute walk from tons of shopping and additional restaurants. If you're going to Reykjavik for nightlife the Plaza Hotel couldn't be more perfectly located for hitting fun night spots, clubs, etc... And there are always cabs waiting outside the hotel so it's very easy to get anywhere you want either by foot or a short cab ride. There is a tourist office next door, and a small supermarket on the other side - both of those were also great assets to the location.

The central plaza area is a designated area for bikers also. Depending on your interests you might find it fun to watch the folks gather and show of their bikes. Sometimes it gets loud but I got a kick out of seeing it.

So, overall there were many things I really liked about the hotel, and the things I disliked weren't of the sort that made me demand a room change, or feel like I couldn't recommend it. If you need plush room accommodations you at least need to see if the Plaza has rooms none of us saw. But if you're ok w/ more basic sleeping accommodations the Plaza is a great option for sight-seeing, centrally located, w/ a friendly and helpful staff.

There's a weird smell in the bathroom, also bathroom is very dirty, not clean at all. We went to the receptionist and asked for another room. She told us it's all book for the weekend right away without checking the computer. What a lie, I checked the internet and there's still room available. Then she asked a guy went up to our room and check the bathroom, he said that's the way it is. The smell is room the hot water?????
Also, very noisy in the midnight, there's lots of drunk people yelling screaming beside our room. They even break the bottles.

This was a very well run and attractive hotel right in the center of the city. The breakfast was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. We stayed there during the volcano disruptions, and the staff really stayed abreast of the news and airport information.

We have just stayed here for six nights and were very impressed by the Hotel Plaza. Our visit was delayed a couple of times because of the flight disruption and we found the staff at the hotel to be very supportive as we had to re-arrange the days on which we would be there, at short notice. The rooms were spacious, clean and well equipped. The buffet breakfast was good with a hot and cold selection. The free computer in the lobby was very useful to check flight & other information. Would cerntainly stay there again!

We stayed in the Center Hotel Plaza for our mini honeymoon in December. We were upgraded on arrival to the penthouse room. The views were fantastic and the hotel was perfectly located. It was a short walk to the Old town and to the night life. The staff at the hotel were both friendly and helpful. The hotel is located next dooor to the Tourist Info Centre and the staff were very helpful there and assisted in booking the various day trips.
Without a doubt I will be staying there again in the very near future!
