I loved this hotel, Arrived quite late around 10.00pm but checking in was a breeze. the foyer / reception area was modern looking and quite stylish.

Got into my room on the top floor facing the square, windows surrounding the bedroom for a great view of everything. Compact bathroom with shower / toilet but all modern furnishings throughout, nice comfy double bed and flat screen TV attached to the wall.

You are in the heart of the city there are bars and restaurants within close proximity which means you’ll get some noise. It’s not overbearing in any sense, just lively as you’d expect with a central location. If you a really light sleeper and don’t intend to be out and about experiencing the nightlife, you might be better off picking somewhere a bit more remote.

As i mentioned its perfectly located, the main street where all the bars/ clubs restaurants are.. is within a 10 -15 minute walking distance. I found it perfect to be able to experience Reykjavik for a weekend and not having to travel huge distances to see everything. The church was about 15 minutes away, the main street about 10. The cost of the hotel, i felt was quite reasonable.. considering the price of everything else there!
Great hotel, i would definitely book there again if i went again.

Stayed here for three nights when we came for a concert in the summer 06. Having read some of the other reviews here, we had a slightly different experience. We had a room in the back of the building, so we did not have a problem with any noise from the square at all. The back of this hotel mainly faces a residential neighborhood, and the only issue we had was being woke up at 4am one morning by three drunk teenagers playing rugby with someone's patio chair-something that could happen anywhere. The room was clean, and the bed comfortable. That being said, we were in one of the rooms where the ceiling has a pretty severe slope above the bed, so we constantly bumped our heads getting in and out of bed. We laughed about it everytime there was a "thud" in the room, but I could see this being irritating for some people. The hotel's location is great, being directly in the center of town and easy walk to loads of restaurants, shops, bars, etc. As other people have mentioned the noisy square, the square is located right in front of this hotel, and it seems that all of the city's teens and pub-going crowd likes to hang out there-late. I would recommend that anyone ask for a room on the other side of the hotel if you feel that noise may be an issue for you. The good thing is the square is home to loads of places to get food/drink/coffee, and there is a very good pizza shop in the square to your immediate right as you exit the hotel lobby. There's also a tourist office to the left that books trips and excursions which we didn't use, but some friends used them for their blue lagoon trip, which worked out fine. We originally wanted to stay a The Borg, but it was fully booked so we ended up here. When I return I will probably try to stay at The Borg as it looked a bit nicer inside, but I wouldn't have a problem returning to this hotel again.

We stayed here for two nights. Finding the hotel can be a bit difficult if you're driving yourself, and so is parking. We ended up parking at a metered space in a residential area to the west of the hotel.

The room itself was nice. We were in a second building, which required a circuitous route from the lobby -- up to the 3rd floor, across a connecting bridge, and down to the 1st floor.

The twin beds were comfortable. The windows had heavy shades that were able to darken the room well. This is important in the summer as it never really gets dark outside at night.

The TV and wired internet worked okay, though the set-top box for the TV was a bit confusing to use. It also has to be plugged in for the internet to work.

The main problem I had was noise. Some other reviews have also mentioned this -- aircraft noise from the in-town airport and street noise. However, this wing actually operates some sort of club in the basement on the weekends which I thought was a bit much. It could have been worse -- they weren't playing loud music, but there was a lot of yelling and banging around all night long right below us.

First of all i'd like to say Iceland is amazing, the people, the place, its all great.
The hotel Plaza however is another story, where do i start? the staff are friendly and speak exceptional english and the hotel is clean and inexpensive but that is the end of the good points from my stay with them.
Me and my partner where unfortunate enough to stay at the front of the hotel on the top floor, when we first moved into the room i was very impressed with views over the city but after the first night it all changed. You see the square at the front of the hotel is a meeting place for Icelands version of the middle age hells angels, who all own loud bikes and they are driving around the square engines blazing until around 1130ish each night.
Once every so often wouldn't be so bad but we had four nights there and each night they where there we tried closing the windows but unfortunately the windows are very thin and the noise just comes on through. The bad news doesn't end there i am afraid, the square is populated by skateboarders before the bikers get there and they too are very loud.
The walls in our room where very thin, to the point we knew our neighbours daily plans before we even got out of bed. The shower room again was awful, who ever built the shower didn't quite have a full grasp on gravity, i mean i'm no plumber but i think the drainage hole should be at the lowest point of the shower to aid drainage and in this instance it wasn't which lead to a flooded shower.
The breakfast wasn't up to much but at this price you can't expect miracles.
All in all even considering the relative cheap price i wouldn't advise anyone to stay here, even if i didn't like them.
the hotel borg on the other hand is amazing, the couple getting married (who we were in iceland to see) stayed there and the whole hotel was excellent.

The hotel is a superb place to stay. It is very clean, modern and has the most soft comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The continental breakfast was very welcome with a good choice of food and drinks. The hotel is heated with geothermal water, which warms the room very well and you have an endless supply of hot, hot water! The bathrooms are very adequate and very clean and like other people who have left reviews the water does smell sulphuric but you do get used to it.

The location of the hotel is also superb, it is in the centre of Reykjavik and it has lots of excellent restaurants within 5 minute walking distance. We eat at Tabasco’s (Mexican) and across the road and Grillhusio Tryggoagota restaurant a 2-minute walk away. Both restaurants were excellent and the food freshly cooked. Try the Viking lager, its very nice and cheaper than the imported Stella, corona etc.

On our way back to the hotel following our meal at Grillhusio Tryggoagota we saw the northern lights in the middle of Reykjavik! It was a very clear night where we could see the stars, then a beautiful display in the sky, it was truly breathtaking!

People in previous posts complained that the TV did not work, but whose goes away to watch TV?!

Book as many trips as possible, they do seem expensive but they are not for what is included.

We only had a 2-night stay, so we booked the Blue Lagoon (an absolute must!! Fantastic!) Gullfoss and Geysir express trip with Icelandic Excursions (which we booked online before we left), its an 11 hour trip but worth every penny. We also visited Þingvellir a very historic site in Iceland and it is also where the North American Plate meets the Eurasian plate and we visited Kerið, a volcanic crater.

Please ensure you take plenty of food and drink as it is not provided and you may get dehydrated when you leave the Blue Lagoon. We walked around the main tourists sites in Reykjavik so this trip is not worthwhile in our opinion as they city centre is not that big.

Get the Flybus to the hotel from the airport, its excellent; you get a transfer the bus terminal from to the hotel, which is included in the price of your ticket. Tickets can be purchased from the airport and they also pick up at the airport for your return journey. Please note that you have to inform the hotel reception by 8pm on the day before you leave so that they can inform the Flybus to pick you up!

We are hoping to return to Iceland as there is so much to see and do and will not hesitate to stay here again.
