Visited for mainly outdoor activities (Golden circle, glacier, south coast etc) but location is great for centre too. Lots of restaurants close although Reykjavik restaurants are twice the price of those outside the city. Good service, some confusion with room (due to flights out cancelled?) but they sorted a superior room with plenty of space, although possibly the worst outlook I've ever seen (back yard, aircon fans, wall) - not pretty although it was quiet!
Breakfast good, clean too, staff generally helpful and friendly.
Parking around is on meter between 1000am and 1800pm (free otherwise), look at parking houses (bilahus) for pay-on-exit convenience. Got one parking ticket in spaces outside for overstaying - kr2500, pay at Landsbank same day for kr1100 reduction.

Room Tip: Express pizza in square - kr2400 for BIG pizza!

I went to Iceland with my brothers last winter, and we stayed at CenterHotel for nearly a week. The trip was largely about getting outdoors and seeing the natural beauty of Iceland, and then of course enjoying the bars/clubs in Reykjavik, so we certainly weren't looking to spend much time at the hotel. That being said, CenterHotel had a lot going for it. For one, the location was fantastic, right in the center of town, and within walking distance of everything one could want to see in Reykjavik. Second, the staff was extremely professional and friendly, and was always quick to answer any questions we had (and we had many questions). And finally, the price was unbeatable relative to the quality of the hotel. Still, let there be no confusion: this wasn't the Ritz. The rooms were simple, clean, and comfortable, but nothing particularly special. The morning breakfast got the job done, but again, was merely OK. Still, CenterHotel packed a lot of bang for the buck, and I would stay there again without hesitation.

Have just returned from Iceland and would recommend this hotel to anyone. Really good location as within walking distance of museums, art galleries, cafes and two really nice restaurants we tried. These were recommended by the hotel staff who were so friendly and helpful when I had a problem. Made the phone call for me and sorted it all out. We had a very early flight in the morning and they provided coffee and pastries at 4.30 am for us.
The restaurants we tried were Geysir (almost next door) and Hornid (just over the square and down the street). Very reasonable prices and good food.
The shopping street (beginning with L) is worth a wander down, lovely silver and lava jewellery at Eureka, he makes it himself. Also boughtt a light wool jumper and could claim the tax back from our purchasesat the tourist information office .
A trip up the top of the Cathedral is worth it, great view of the city. A lift takes you most of the way up.
Can also recommend the Golden Circle coach tour(try and have the blonde female tour guide as she had really interesting things to say about Iceland in general) also try and make time to go to the Blue Lagoon, it's an amazing experience (book a table at the lava restaurant when you arrive and try the fish soup, I have never tasted anything so delicious.
Stayed at the Northern Lights Inn for a couple of days which is right next to Blue Lagoon and they will drop you there, pick you up and lend you towels to take. Again amazingly helpful and friendly and the 'catch of the day' was delicious .
I may have looked a bit silly but can highly recommend wearing a bath hat while in the water at the Blue Lagoon. It stops your head feeling chilly if its windy and also protects your hair from the water. Otherwise coat your hair in conditioner before you go in. We were also told to take off any silver jewelerry as it would turn black.
We found Iceland a fantastic place to stay for a few days, didn't get to see the Northern Lights as too cloudy and not frosty enough.

I have recently stayed at the Plaza for two nights. I had the superior deluxe single room which was at a special reduced rate of 70 euros.
The Good: the hotel is a great location. Breakfast is pretty good (buffet style). Friendly staff.
The bad: towels were frayed/torn on the sides and one had hair all over it. One of the wall lights was broken. The room internet was not working properly (and in the lobby, was not working at all), I tried to use skype and it just didn't work. There was no table clock in the room (I think, this only exists in North America). No facial tissue/kleenex in the room either. When my friends called from outside to reach me, the operator constantly asked them which hotel they were calling (as there are multiple centerhotels in the city) even though every hotel has a different phone number and they were calling the Plaza's number. They would even tell him the phone number yet he kept asking for the name of the hotel. Is it really that complicated to figure out an incoming call!
Bottom line: Will not stay there again (that is if I ever go to Iceland again). For 70 euros, I expected more but then again one must lower expectations when in Europe:)

We, a couple in our Thirties stayed there for four nights. The hotel is an excellent location just at the end of the main shopping street, on the door step to many bars and restaurants and a 3 minute walk to the harbour. The rooms are basic yet comfortable for a short break where you wil spend most of your time outdoors anyhow. Although we have to say the beds were very soft. Tea/ Coffee making facilities are available in the room as well as a minibar. Our room had a shower only, but not sure whether this is a general standard throughout the hotel. And the water in the tap as well as the shower does have a strong sulphur smell so if you are a little squeamish, get a bottle of water from the nearby supermarket which is open late and offers a great alternative to the otherwise very expensive drinks throughout Reykjavik. That's the place to go when you are travelling on a budget and rather spend a £1.20 or ISK 200 on a can of local brew than £4.60 or ISK 900 for a beer in the English pub right across.
The breakfast buffet is plentiful and will set you up for the day ahead. The tourist information centre is right next door and opens weekdays 9-6 to arrange any trip you like. Our main purpose was to see the Northern Lights which we did manage. There are two or three companies to offer the same trip and depending on season there might be a small price difference. It is advisable to book on the day as the tour will get confirmed or cancelled due to weather conditions by 5.45pm every day. This way you don't need to worry to book in advance and then possibily get a refund if the tour never goes due to bad/ overcast weather conditions.
We also did two other tours with Netbus, Blue Lagoon and The Golden Circle which were excellent. Netbus seems to be a much smaller company than Reykjavik Excursions and therefore operates smaller buses which we prefered. The Blue Lagoon is an absolute must and you should plan 4 hours for your visit there. We had hale and snow as we soaked in the warm water...amazing!!!
We had a very early flight back to the UK but again not a problem due to the Icelandic efficiency scheduling the bases for the arrivals and departures of flights. This way we were picked up at 4.35am from the hotel and leaving the BSI bus terminal at 5am to be at the airport for 5.40am to get a 7am flight home, so there seems to be no need to spend a lot of money on taxis.
Overall we really loved our trip and can definately recommend to go in the winter to have a chance to see those Northern Lights ( we will post separate advice on how best to capture them in the forum section) and the Plaza Hotel would again be our number one choice due to its location.

Hotel was very good location, direct way to the "shopping" streets, anyway shoppingstrees was very small and poor.

Breakfast was great, i did sleep, but i didn't like the temperature in the floor, it was cold. Basic hotel with Finland standard for Finnish people, but if you come poor country this is 4 star hotel for you. Also i have to mentioned that the lift didn't worked properly, it was staying with open doors, but they will fix it, i guess...

Location was great, shopping street and food places was very near. Also the whalesafars was near.

Adequate-Good choice.

We stayed at Centrehotel Plaza (or Plaza hotel as it's known to Icelanders) for 4 nights. It was a lovely, modern hotel. It was exactly what we needed for our stay. The showers were a bit on the small side, but still manageable.

The hotel's location could not have been better. Located at the top of the main square area, it's close to all shops and restaurants. There's a local supermarket a few paces from the hotel doors. There's a great selection of restaurants from French, Icelandic, Mexican and Italian. For those looking for nightlife, the best bars and clubs are a 2 minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was great and there was an amazing selection.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to stay in Reykjavik.
