“Happy little hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014

All the staff spoke excellent English - which always helps. The room was larger than a normal twin - with a separate sitting area with T.V. and minibar. The shower was good and the hot water - once it came through - was very hot; the cold water was very cold. Once you got used to the sulphur smell - everything was fine. Breakfast - a buffet style - was adequate - at least they had a proper toaster which actually toasted the bread. Attached to the hotel was a bar restaurant - which was very good. I was very happy to stay here. The location is ideal for accessing central Reykjavik.

We stayed in an apartment at the Fron for a short break.

LOCATION

The hotel is situated in arguably the best spot in Reykjavik. All of the city sights are within walking distance with an abundance of shops and restaurants within walking distance. There is also a bonus store on the same street which is handy for tea / coffee supplies and light snacks. The only downside with the location is the street noise on weekend evenings. It is no exaggeration that the town comes alive and revellers have a very loud and fun time on Friday and Saturday nights. As such the rooms facing the street do suffer with the noise, so I would say if you are not the type to join the fun just request a room to the back of the hotel as these are very quiet. If you do enjoy going out the area is fun, safe with lots of dining and drinking options.

ROOMS

Our studio apartment was made up of a double bed, lounge area, bathroom and kitchenette. The rooms were nice and warm and clean. The bed was made up of two single duvets which was a little unusual but not the end of the world. If you like a kettle in your room then this can be requested at reception. There is a fridge which is handy for storing things and the bathroom is clean modern and spacious with a powerful shower. There was plentiful hot water, which is renowned for its rotten egg smell. You do get used to this however, and is an added charm to being somewhere like Iceland.

FOOD

Breakfast was included in the room rate and consisted of cold meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, toast, cereal and fruit. There is plenty of food for everyone, and although there is no hot food if you do not like this style of buffet there are many local options around the hotel. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening, however we did notice a good amount of people in there each night.

SERVICE

Unfortunately the service was the real area in which this hotel was let down. On arrival the receptionist was very reluctant to let us have a kettle for the room. We knew from previous reviews that kettles are provided, however when we politely requested one we were met with "what's wrong why can't you just use a pot or pan" I mentioned that for speed a kettle would be more convenient and he walked away shaking his head before returning with a kettle. It seemed a shame that kettles are available yet we were made to feel awkward for asking. The next morning there were two different member of staff on reception, a male and female. I walked over with a map with the intention of asking for some directions. It was only me at the counter and I walked over and waited as they were talking. I said hello and the male looked at me yet said nothing. After a whole minute of the two of them talking to eachother and not evening acknowledging me I just walked away. Now I do not expect to be pandered to in any way yet I found 80% of the staff here to be rude, ignorant and unhelpful. In fairness when we checked out we were dealt with by another male receptionist (young with a moustache). This guy was friendly, helpful and really stood out from everyone else. I would suggest the other receptionists take some inspiration from this guy when serving customers.

Overall the value for money was fair for the room and location but the terrible attitudes of the staff put me off ever going back. It does not take a lot to deliver basic customer service and be a friendly face for a hotel. We went to various other places in Iceland and the staff were lovely so there really is no excuse for this place.

I stayed here for 3 days from Boxing Day. The hotel is very well situated on the main shopping street. A couple of small supermarkets are nearby and there is a fridge in the room to keep snacks in. No tea/coffee facilities in the rooms though.
Wifi was good and breakfast buffet was fairly small but adequate, mainly cold food.
Rooms were warm and beds very comfortable. The hotel even gave us a Christmas present of a nice candle and pack of cards. The rooms are quite small but adequate for 3 days. For the money we paid, it was excellent value. The only problem we had was at breakfast it sometimes gets quite busy and one of the ladies working in the restaurant gets very upset & is very rude if you try to move chairs around to sit with your family! She also tries to take plates away when you are still eating. For that reason, I can't give it the maximum score.

We stayed here to celebrate my husbands 40th, the staff couldn't have been more helpful and even upgraded us. The location is spot on, everything you need is on the doorstep. If we go back to iceland we'll go back to Fron. Brilliant place.

I stayed in this hotel just for one night, in the late august 2013. The room was outstanding, very big, clean and comfortable. But it was a suite, so this opinion could be influenced by that. The breakfast was simple, but acceptable. The real strength of this hotel is the position: Laugavegur is the best street of Reykjavík and it is definitely the heart of the city. The staff is very polite.

Absolutely fantastic place for the price paid. You can't get a more central location on the main street for 39 euros/night for a double room...and in Iceland too! Massive yet comfortable rooms, lovely and warm, such comfotable beds, hot showers 24/7, fully equipped kitchenette inc microwave/hob/fridge and very friendly helpful staff (apart from one very unfriendly woman with mid-length mousy-brown hair who was occasionally on reception..the other three men we dealt with were wonderful). The place is immaculate. The breakfast is plentiful and I wasn't bothered that there was no hot buffet style/english breakfast...plenty of yoghurt, fruit, toast, cereals and fresh juices. I honestly don't know how one could improve this place!

As other people have said, the location of the hotel is brilliant - everything is in easy walking distance. The room was spotless and spacious, not luxurious but more than adequate. The staff were always polite, I wouldn't say over helpful or friendly but pleasant and efficient. Breakfast was Ok, could be over busy and one morning there were no tables available. Could hear a bit of noise at night but not a major problem. I would happily use this hotel again.
