This is a basic 2 star hotel and the staff are not friendly and unhelpful and can be rude at times. Whilst waiting for the bus to take us back to the airport after our stay here we observed the desk male receptionist refusing to let in 2 women at 4.30 am into the hotel foyer to catch the same bus whilst a snow blizzard was blowing outside. In fact he was very rude to them and shut the door in their face. There are nicer hotels and apartments in Reykjavik.
I am an icelander and live far a way from Reykjavik. Many times I need to travel to Reykjavik and always stay at Hotel Frón. Staff is very much friendly and location is the best one in the City walking distance to all spots you need to see.
This was the second time I stayed at this hotel. The first time, I had booked a double room and was very pleased when I got a deluxe studio apartment. Because the studio apartment was so nice, I booked it for our family holiday (3 persons). This time we were upgraded to a two bedroom apartment. The apartment had two large bedrooms (one with a television) and a livingroom with a kitchen. The staff on the hotel were also very helpful with respect to booking trips. The breakfast was very basic, but with the price we paid, we were happy that there was a breakfast included at all. It is the perfect place to stay because (i) the location can not be better (ii) you can stay in a large apartment in the centre of the city and (iii) even if you have your own kitchen - you get a breakfast in the morning.
It was great living in the Studio Apartments . Fantastic Location . The Bonus Store , Bank ATM / Forex Exchange and also the BSI ( if you can walk a bit more - 15mins max. ) are all at walkable distance . Dont go by the reviews of the Noise on weekends . We did not experience any but the trick was to take up a Room on the backside.
Just beware of making Local Calls to Mobile Phones ( the cost for landline is 15Kr per minute whereas that for Mobile was 50Kr per minute ) .
Very Clean and Neat .
Breakfast ( currently ) in the adjacent Scandinavia Hotel was a bit let down as there were hardly any choice of food and with aboslutely no change for 07 days.
Hotel Fron is located on the main shopping drag in Reykjavik, just a few blocks up the hill from the city center. Couldn't ask for a better location! We arrived quite early in the day (before noon) and were able to check in early during the busy Christmas/New Year's week, which was perfect. The room was on the third floor, and it was quite large. It had a kitchenette with basic dishes and cookware and a mini fridge, all of which I did not expect but was a pleasant surprise. The bathroom was large, but the shower was small (typical European, not a lot of room to move around). The shower did have 2 shower heads, one high up and on adjustable height. My husband appreciated the higher up one. The room was clean and simple, with a TV and free wi-fi.
We stayed 3 nights. Overall, it was fine and the price was fair. We happened to be there just after several snowstorms that left a lot of snow on the roads. It doesn't seem that Icelanders are accustomed to shoveling and plowing as much as we are here in New Hampshire- we had a difficult time parking our car because the space wasn't plowed, and the front desk did not have any shovels, so we did the best we could. Also, the televisions in most of the Icleandic hotels we stayed in over this week have a little trick to them- they don't just turn on with the remote power button like in the US- after you turn on the power, you have to press a number to get the channels working/showing. I called the front desk for help (once for the tv, once for the safe) and the staff was very nice about coming up to assist us. Also, the wi-fi signal is a little wonky. Super slow. I suppose it might have something to do with very heavy internet traffic in that area in general.
The hot water in Iceland comes out of the tap hot. It can also have a sulfuric smell, as it is brought in from the geothermal pockets in the country. Keep this in mind if you are noticing an odor in the bathroom. We noticed it got better as the water was running.
We ate breakfast (included) a couple mornings. It was typical, bread, jam, yogurt, cereal, ham, cheese and that's about it. We did not eat in the restaurant, preferring to venture out for more traditional Icelandic meals.
All in all, a fine stay, no real complaints, no real shining moments. I would stay there again.
