After reading through the reviews on Trip Adviser we chose this restaurant for a special dinner on a rare weekend away without the kids. We chose the 3 course surprise menu and were thoroughly impressed with the offering.
The menu can be with or without the choice of a different wine per course as selected by the restaurant however we chose ourselves a very nice bottle which went perfectly well with the food. A wine cooler or ice bucket would be my only recommendation as a constructive criticism.
We seemed to have a lot more than the 3 courses listed with delicious little tasters between courses and the spoonful of mackerel pâté with local caviar whet the appetite perfectly.
The night in question happened to fall on the Icelandic national beer day and the free beer breads on offer were fantastic with the butter/Icelandic yogurt and herbaccompaniment.
When the starter arrived the varied selection of local fish/shellfish was a treat to behold. My husband is not the biggest fish fan, however very little was left on the plate! Our waitress described the origin of each and every aspect of our dish and pointed out the man that caught the salt cod was sitting 2 tables away.
A ,fungi-cino' followed, this looked like a cappuccino but consisted of local wind mushroom soup of sorts and topped with cream and nutmeg went down a treat.
The main was the best plate of grub I've had in a long time. The calf was cooked to perfection and the accompanying vegetables and 'gravy' complimented very well indeed.
Desert looked like a piece of art and the homemade ice cream side was very good.
All in all, the passion for quality, local ingredients shone through and delivered a memory moment for us that we will certainly look to repeat when back in Iceland again. Hopefully soon!
