Reykjavik Hostel Village
Ranked #39 of 109 Specialty Lodging in Reykjavik
Reviewed April 1, 2014

I stayed at Hostel Village with two of my friends, during the second week of March. I did quite a bit of research before picking this place. We could have gotten a hotel, but just didn't want to spend the money and wanted to meet people at the hostel. We reserved a private room for three, and arrived to a room with a bunk bed and two more beds pushed together. The room was rather spacious, clean, with clean sheets, pillows, towels and warm blankets. There was a sink in the room, however the bathroom was shared, and that was ok, as we never really ran into anyone else using it at the same time as us. We did have a balcony, which was convenient, but the lock on the balcony door cannot be opened from the outside if slammed shut (which we did :) and had to be rescued by staff, who were not in a hurry, and we almost froze out there). No TV's in the room, but a fridge and a kettle. We purchased a lot of food at supermarkets and made sandwiches for our trips. We brought our own thermoses, and made tea to take with us every morning. The Wi-Fi was good, the speed was fine, not sure what others were talking about. We parked our car right outside the building, which was very nice. And the location of the hostel is great, it's close to the city centre, close enough to major road ways, and close to places to eat at.
Breakfast was good, there were different kinds of cereal, of course milk, juices, ham, salami, boiled eggs, bread, tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh oranges, and of course fresh pastries. We had croissants filled with chocolate. Coffee was not good, but everything else great and more than enough to start the day. If you're into yogurt, buy it at the supermarket and bring it along to breakfast. I wish, however, there was a community kitchen.
Overall, a good place to stay, good service and great location! I will stay here again next year, on my way to Greenland!

Room Tip: Private rooms are of course always better and have bedding included, as well as towels. Dorm rooms a...

It's close to the city center about 5-10 mins walking to the main shopping street Laugavegur and downtown Reykjavik. I had a single room which was clean and comfortable and had a big wardrobe, a small sink with mirror, a writing desk, a fridge and a kettle to make tea or coffee as well as free wi-fi. The shared toilet and bathroom were always very clean and accessible. Breakfast buffet was okay, nothing fancy but good choice for the price. The staff was also very friendly and helpful, and even though I arrived and left outside the opening hours of the reception (08:00-16:00) I had no problem checking in and out, just let them know in advance when you'll be arriving and they'll leave the keys for you to pick up along with a brochure on how to find your room (the Hostel is comprised of separate houses). I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a good but cheap accomodation close to downtown.

We got a private room here substantially cheaper than we would have paid for a bed in a dorm in Reykjavik's more centrally located hostels, yet this place is only a 5 minute walk to Hallgrímskirkja (Reykjavik's famous concrete church) and a further 5/10 to central downtown.

The room was clean, the heating super efficient, and the shower powerful and always hot. Wifi also works well everywhere.

My only minor issues were that there is no kitchen or common area in the hostel, so it is more like a hotel in terms of available facilities. However the private rooms all have fridges. Also the reception is only open 8-4pm. Some of the rooms are located in a different building about 200 metres up the road, which isn't a problem but should probably be pointed out. We arrived at the hostel at 1pm, buzzed the intercom on the door and were let in electronically and instructed to collect our key and directions to our room from a little envelope in the postbox inside the lobby, so you can get help and assistance outside of the reception opening times but it's not face to face.

Breakfast is not included so make sure you visit the supermarket the night before if you want to eat before a tour the following day (nearest supermarket is by the church)

Overall this was a perfectly adequate choice though. Well located and extremely good value for money.

I would definitely recommend the Reykjavik Hostel Village. When we arrived at 1am, our key hadn't been left out, but the owner drove over as soon as we called and sorted us out. The set-up is a bit weird, we were in a house up the road from the main building, but it took 2 minutes to walk. We had a twin room, which was small, but perfectly adequate, with a wardrobe, kettle and desk. Our only issue was some fairly pointless curtains so the room did get really light in the morning. The bathroom was right next door and had an amazing shower. Breakfast was great- simple, but lots of it! There is also amazing internet in all rooms, and plenty of parking in the side streets if you've got a car. You can walk to some restaurants in 10 minutes, and be in the centre within 15 minutes.

Room Tip: We had a second floor room in building 83 which was probably the furthest from the main building, bu...

Dear Kirsty V Smith,

Thank you for your friendly review.
We are happy that you liked your stay with us and we really appreciate your feedback.

As for the curtains you mentioned, they are only for decoration purposes. Maybe you did not see the roller blind that were behind, which totally block all light and are very useful in summer as we have daylight 24hrs. ;)

We hope to see you again in Iceland.

Warm regards,
Silla

My boyfriend and I spent four days here in January. We opted for a room with shared bathroom, the room was clean and spacious and the bed very comfortable, although we had twin beds rather than a double. The bathroom was clean and the shower lovely and hot after the cold days! The buffet breakfast was good and the staff friendly. It's about a 10 minute walk from downtown Reykjavik. It was great value for money and we'd definitely stay here again!

Just got back from our stay @ Hostel Village, and I have too say was pleased. The room was a decent enough size for us and it had everything we needed for our short stay. The shared bathroom was always kept clean and we never had to que to use the facility. If you want a cheap, no fuss, decent and clean place to stay for a few nights close to the main streets then Hostel Village is for you.

Compared to other similar accommodation, this is excellent value for money. My single room for 4 nights was perfect, small but warm and clean with the shower and loo next door. The room was cleaned and I got a clean towel on day 2. Breakfast is excellent and available from 7.30 - 10 which I think is very good. Limited reception staffing is my only slight criticism, otherwise it would have been an "excellent". Thanks for a wonderful stay.
