“Expensive but nice”
Reviewed March 18, 2006

This hotel is stylish and modern and within walking distance of anything you'd want to see in Rekyavik. The room was very comfortable, especially the bed, though I could smell smoke from the trendy bar/restaurant one floor below. Overall, I'd stay there again, but be warned that it ain't cheap (then again, neither is anything else in Iceland!).

We couldn't have picked a better location. The airlines lost our luggage - and as soon as we arrived, the 101 staff jumped into action calling the airlines, offering all kinds of assistance and helping us to make the best of a bad situation. The staff from reception to the restaurant were top notch. They were friendly, offered great advice on tours, restaurants, etc. The rooms were comfortable w/ a great shower; the spa was relaxing, the location perfect and we'll return as soon as we can.

We just returned from a New Year's trip to Iceland and spent two nights at the Hotel Centrum and three nights at 101 Hotel. I wish we'd stayed at the Centrum and just had drinks at 101! The lobby space and bar are cool and what you'd expect of this hotel. The rooms attempt to be cool, but fall short in many ways for the price of the room. A hotel room that costs more than $400 is expensive in almost any part of the world and with that you come to expect luxury amenities - not so at 101. Drinking glasses and some furniture from IKEA, lots of price lists telling you how much books/dvds/spa bath products/razors, etc. cost to buy - some of these should be gratis at this level. A fancy looking shower with the worst placed showerhead and no privacy in the bathroom - it's part of the bedroom area. No real attention to detail and the staff wasn't great either. Our room at the other hotel was $148 and included a nice breakfast buffet - free food is not something to scoff in Iceland where a cup of coffee is almost six bucks. Centrum has a nice staff and is well worth the money. Will not stay here again.

I recently visited this hotel with my boyfriend - it was expensive but worth it for a 30th birthday celebration! First thought was that it didn't look like much from the outside but that all changed the moment we stepped in to the hotel. Very sleek design in the bar area, and yet manages to be wonderfully cosy with it's open fire and lots of 'coffee table' books to browse through. We got the most standard double room and it was fabulous - enormous bed, and even more enormous shower which was more like a wet room in itself! I would second the advice to take heed that it is all open plan...!
I would also say to go and try the spa - there was never anyone else around so we had it all to ourselves and it was just what was needed after a day out in the drizzle!

I stayed at 101 Hotel for two nights during a two-week trip to Iceland in July 2005. Also stayed one night at Hotel Borg (as part of a one-week organized tour) and at the Radisson (after being bumped from a flight back to the US). If I returned to Reykjavik, I would without question stay at the 101 Hotel.

The 101 Hotel is small, centrally located, hip but not snotty, and comfortable. Yes, it has some similarities to Ian Schrager-type boutique hotels but with one big difference: even a standard-size room is not cramped for space. The bathroom/shower area is big, there is adequate storage space, and you even get a desk. Everything in the room is of the finest quality: bathroom fixtures, Aveda bath/body products, the calculator on top of the desk, the tv/dvd player, towels, and bed linens.

The hotel's design is, simply put, incredibly well thought out. The black and white color scheme (I've never seen black granite used so well) is softened by blonde wood. The restaurant is terrific--airy, light (there is a skylight roof), and fun. The restaurant has a long, black granite bar with white stools on either side--so that you can face your companions. The bar/restaurant attracted plenty of locals and the food was excellent and relatively speaking, a value, compared to other top Reykjavik restaurants. Though the hotel is clearly trying to exude "coolness," that effort is not accompanied by a lot of attitude.

While I think the hotel should have a staffer available to assist with luggage (the receptionist did not offer one to us), the staff was generally friendly and helpful. One receptionist even accompanied me to a nearby police station to help me contest a parking ticket.

Though I did not have time to use them, the spa facilities appeared to be top notch and the small exercise room had brand-new, modern equipment.

The only real criticism I have (and this is not something the hotel can do anything about) is that the rooms facing the park/harbour also overlook a highly trafficked road, which can be noisy.

If you can afford it, 101 Hotel is the place to stay in Reykjavik.

Having just read the latest review dated Nov 22, I'm surprised. We visited this hotel for a weekend city break back in April and I've recommended it to everyone as the only place to stay in Reykjavik! Prior to our arrival, we found the staff to be very helpful in giving advice on room selection, arranging tours and recommending (and booking) restaurants. The hotel is very centrally located - 2 minutes away from shopping, tourist sites and the nightlife - and we could easily walk home in the wee hours of the morning from the clubs. The room exceeded our expectations and I agree with one of the previous reviews that it is better to have one of the rooms on the top floor - ours had a patio and amazing views of the port. The bathroom was huge with a gorgeous free-standing tub and shower for two. The bed was a true king size, which I've found to be rare in Europe and had the most amazing duvet. I will say, whatever you do don't open any of the gifts i.e. the cds, books, etc. or you will be charged. One of the forgotten gems is the hot tub which is tucked away in the basement. I would suggest giving this a visit after a late night out. All in all the staff were relaxed and helpful and set on making our visit memorable.
