“Good but could be better.”
Reviewed September 2, 2011

Welcome by reception staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms stylish and light and very clean. OK but lacks storage and no suitcase stand. Rooms above the bar can suffer from noise from adjoining building.
Bar stylish and lively and OK value during happy hour. Food in the bar restaurant was very good but spoilt by inattentive service, staff need to be properly managed. We went elsewhere after waiting 20 minutes for a menu.
All in value probably matches current rating of 11 out of 110 certainly no higher. Would I recommend to a friend. No because I think I could find better value and service elsewhere.

Hotel 101 is a real gem, right in the city centre of fabulous Reykjavik, but down a side street so it is nice and quiet. The hotel is very chic, ouzing style from every brick, and the attention to detail is extraordinary - you can even buy the fixtures and fittings in your room if you feel so inclined! The staff are attentive, the bar and restaurant are both great and the decor is stunning. It is, like most hotels of this nature in iceland, expensive, but well worth a treat if you're staying for a night or two in one of the best cities in the world.

We stayed one night at 101 hotel - more a slick, little night club with rooms than a place to tuck-in and make yourself at home. Our goal: to see the best, high-design hotel in Reykjavik. Mission accomplished! 101 is an unassuming building with a small reception desk set off to one side, flanked by wonderful contemporary art - a portal to a batch of small rooms with wonderful bathroom fixtures, wall coverings, and bedroom lay-outs worthy of a design magazine photo-shoot. The staff is young, international, super accommodating. With the right attitude (and spending account) and travel companion (carefree and beautiful) this place will make you feel like a bohemian on an international fashion show runway.

But having explored much of Reykjavik and Akureyri, the experience was a bit exaggerated and inauthentic, especially since Scandinavian design is the country’s house style at its best hotels. Some things in Reykjavik have the taint of having blossomed in the boom years before the country went bankrupt. This felt like one of those places – indulgent and forced. Centerhotel Thingholt shared some of 101’s aesthetic with breakfast included. (I liked it better). Also, Iceland by its very nature and history is international – there are cool artists, galleries and independent spirits aplenty. So you could have your own 101 experience without checking in.

Right in the city center, walking distance to the best restaurants, this recent well designed hip boutique hotel is certainly an excellent choice. Nowhere in Iceland do you see such interesting crowd visiting the bar and restaurant. The staff is wonderful (but the people of Iceland are wonderful) and the reception/concierge team extremely helpful. We could not be more pleased with our choice. Yes, the noise is an issue on week-ends when the "inside" rooms without view are your only option if you want to sleep but otherwise, no complains.

We stayed for the first night upon arrival. Excellent location. Very modern; great service. We did not stay on a weekend so we did not experience the usual "noise". We did so at Hotel Borg a week later where our Friday night before early Saturday return flight was "lousy" - partying throughout the night. Rooms are not cheap but none of your "better" hotels here are. Think of the prices of staying in central London or Paris...
