“Everything you need in an excellent location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2010

I am very glad I chose this hotel from the list offered by IcelandAir because it was very comfortable, friendly and in an excellent location, both near the sea and the main shopping area.

I e-mailed the hotel before going to ask for a historic room and was given one. Although there are no views because there are only skylights and it is a little small, the room was lovely and perfect for a short break. The bed was really comfy, and the rest of the furniture is tasteful. There is a kettle although only paper cups and a very basic range of tea and coffee, and a keyless safe. If there is any English football on Sky or C5, this is available on one of the channels on the TV. Guests have complete control of the radiators and they are left on all day.

I read in one review that the water smelled of sulphur and this is certainly true of the hot water. However, who cares when you are having a shower in water coming directly from under the earth's surface! The cold water is lovely to drink and everywhere you go (cafes, restaurants etc), you can find jugs of it where you can help yourself.

The breakfast was fine - there is a selection of bread, cereals, cheese, cold meats, salad and fruit. There is also a waffle-maker where you can make your own waffles. On our day of departure, they made the buffet available at 4.30am so that we could have something to eat and drink before we went to the airport.

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, from confirming trip reservations to phoning taxis to the hospital when I injured my foot. We will definitely go back there if we return to Reykjavik, which is more than likely because it's a fantastic city and like nowhere I've been before.

Thank you very much for your nice comment. We are very glad that you enjoyed your stay with us!

I hope that everything is ok with your leg injury!

We do get some complaints about the water smelling bad, but as you mention in your comment, it is only because that in Reykjavík we are getting the water directly from the ground and therefor it smells a bit like sulphur. But the water is still clean and all natural :)

We stayed here as part of a package with icelandair. Initially I feared the worse because of the great deal we got & only chose this hotel because of Reading reviews on tripadvisor of the other package hotel options. The hotel has a great central location, easy walking distance to the main street which is just two blocks up & is also opposite the sea with some rooms having this & a mountain view. After a few excursions we realised how well we had chosen, Hilton Nordica is not walkable & the cabin hotel is also a good distance away. The hotel was fairly basic but the shower was great, bed very comfortable, the room clean, sky sports & BBC news on the tv, staff very helpful & the breakfast was good with choices of local dishes, waffles, fruit, toast & cereals. I would stay here again & fully recommend.

This hotel is the best placed (in my opinion) to explore Reykjavik. A quick walk leads to shops, the harbour, restaurants and many other great places.
We did three trips with Reykjavik Excursions which were fantastic ( The Northern Lights Tour, The Golden Circle and a visit to the Blue Lagoon), a coach collects you straight from your hotel and drops you off again. The staff at the hotel are happy to advise and arrange a great many other tours too.
The hotel was clean and breakfast is included. We are going back again in February 2011 to visit Perlan, return to the Blue Lagoon and explore this wonderful country further.
Also, the Icelandic people are extremely welcoming and friendly.

We stayed here on a short break in Reyjavik and were not disappointed by the hotel. The staff are pleasant and helpful and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is buffet style and of a reasonable standard with enough variety to cover most tastes, although if you are hoping for a full english you will be dissappointe bit you could try some more traditional icelandic breakfast food if you're feeling brave.

The location was good for us being close to the sea front and a short strool from the port. The main shops, bars and retaurants are also well within walking distance. Compared to some 3 star accommodation we have stayed in in other countries this was of a far higher standard and reasonable value in relation to other hotels in Reykjavik.

stayed here in sept 2010
not a bad hotel but not brilliant either, rooms have 1 wardrobe and two drawers so not a lot of space to put your clothes also has a safe in the room which is handy. we got a room on the 3rd floor which had a good view overlooking the water and mountains in the background. breakfast starts at 7 and ends at 10 but be warned if your not there by about 8.30 all the rolls will be gone and all the nice bread. so you end up with plain rather dry or stale bread to make your sandwich with. plenty of cold meats and cheeses. cereals, fruit and waffle making machine. staff were ok was not happy that there are no tea or coffee making facilities in your room and after breakfast if you want a tea or coffee you have to pay 2 pounds per cup, rip off. shower in room is small and you get use to the smell of sulphur everytime you use it. the sink did not have a plug so not helpful for saving water. the main high st is only a five min walk and there is a 24 hour supermarket round the back.

Dear kake12,

Thank you for your comment! We are always happy to get reviews in order to improve our services.

I am sorry to hear that the breadrolls and all the nice bread were finished so early on. This was a problem I was not aware of and have now taken the matter into my own hands to order enough bread and rolls each day.

Just last week, we got tea kettle facilities into all of our 120 rooms, so now all our guests are able to make their own tea and coffee in the rooms and do therefor not have to pay for coffe from our machine.

Unfortunately the sulphur smell of the hot water is out of our hands to fix, since in Reykjavik we get our hot water from natural hot springs.

The rooms are terrible and depressing and I would not recommend a stay to anyone, the only slight caveat is the cleanliness of the rooms/bathrooms which was good. The food is terrible, especially breakfast, consisting of the normal Icelandic rubbish (cold meats, cheese and other dull offerings). My stay was not aided by the fact I was forced to spend near 24hrs hear due to the 2010 Icelandic volcanic activity. The showers have a vomit-inducing sulphur smell- the worst I have smelt in the whole of Iceland. Finally, the WiFi does not function in the rooms and only works in reception resulting in people "hogging" the single workstation in the foyer. If your desperate give the Fosshotel Baron a go, otherwise be sensible; choose somewhere else.

This was our base for a week of trips in and around Reykjavik. The hotel was clean and a short walk from the main shopping street. Our room had a great view across the bay.
The breakfast had a good chose of local dihes and was more than enough to set us up for the day. Iceland is a amazing place and i hope we can return soon.
