“cheap, cheerfull and very warm”
Reviewed December 4, 2006

We stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of December. The hotel staff were very friendly. The check in was quick and easy. The guy at reception was very helpful when we were booking trips - advising us which were not worth it at the time of year. The room was pleasant with two single beds, which we pushed together! They were extremely comfortable and warm. There were no tea and coffee facilities (this is standard we have found in many hotels abroad - we take our own mini kettle and teabags - not a hardship!) Breakfast was excellent - try the waffles with maple syrup - delicious! and how often do you get chocolate biscuits amongst a breakfast buffet - plenty there to warm us up before going out in the cold (there's healthy stuff like muesli and fruit too). The location of the hotel is excellent and within easy walking distance of the many shops and restaurants. We were told that if the northern lights made an appearance we should be able to see them from outside, but it was too cloudy while we were there to confirm this.

All in all it was an excellent place to stay and we would come back again no problem.

Stayed here in a single room for 4 nights late November. Good value for the amenities though no tea/coffee facility in room. Location is excellent as you are 1 block from the seafront and only 2 blocks from the main street (Laugavegur). Across the road is the fabulous, though unbelievably expensive, Argentina restaurant for all steak lovers. The restaurant in the hotel is a modern take on Korean food and they let you cook your own at the table via built-in grills! Rooms were always spotless and the staff are some of the most accommodating I've ever come across with simple tour booking procedures/airport transfers and a hearty smile. There's even a Dominos pizza place almost next door if your on a budget and a Barclays bank ATM 2 blocks away should you run short. There are plenty of bars within 5-10 minutes walk (Dillons was great) and the Flybus to the airport will pick you up outside the front door.
OVERALL: Great staff, OK restaurant, Good buffet style hot breakfast, top location, will stay again
POSTSCRIPT: They lose a point for not having smoking rooms, though you can smoke in the bar after 5. This of course means paying ISK600 for a bottle of beer and the "privilege"!

  • Liked — Location, friendly staff
  • Disliked — Non Smoking
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't book northern lights tour til you get there and ask staff for weather recommendations

Generally a good hotel, although I would have said it was a 2 star rather than 3 star.

The location is great, a short walk to the old harbour or the main shopping street and the 24 hour store is only a minutes walk away which is very useful when you need a hot drink when returning from the Northern Lights tour at midnight, frozen to the core!

The rooms are fairly basic, but bathroom and bedding were spotless and with the radiator turned up full it got nice and snug very quickly.

The staff were helpful and pleasant, but only one receptionist on at a time. I waited 15 minutes to retrieve my key one evening as the receptionist arranged tours and transfers for the people in front of me.

The only thing which bugged me was the state of the carpet in my room which was heavily stained and in need of replacement. A minor thing really, but it made the place seem grubby which it wasn't really.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights (standard room) as part of an IcelandAir Package from Oct 16-19, 2006. We were very satisfied with our stay.
When we arrived beraggled after our redeye flight at 8:30am, the reception was extremely prompt, giving us our room keys immediately after seeing our voucher, without needing any forms completed or even a credit card. Checking out was just as easy, basically just returning the key. The lobby has lots of brochures on tours, bus schedules, free city maps.
Our room (410) faced the ocean and had great views of Mt Esja (through 2 large windows that cheerfully filled the room with light). The beds were two twin beds next to each other, and had extremely warm down comforters. The room was fairly good size for the two of us, with a desk, tv, and a table with two chairs, which was convenient for eating on. The bathroom was simple w/standing shower, and had a hairdryer (very important as the US to European converter we brought didn't fit the recessed Icelandic sockets). The water does have a sulfur smell, but it doesn't affect the taste of the tap water.
Breakfast was included, buffet style from 7-10am, with deli meats, yogurt, cereal, waffles, and pickled herring for the adventurous. It was a great way to save money by eating a hearty breakfast before starting our day! There is also the option for 800 Kronur to make sandwiches to take with you including a soda and a chocolate bar, but we never did this.
There is ample free parking at the hotel, and overall we found finding street parking in Reykjavik to be fairly easy. Walking to city center was only 10 minutes, and there is a 10-11 (24hr grocery store) right behind the hotel, which is good for snacks or packing your own lunches for daytrips. For the budget-minded, they sell hot soup and rotisserie chicken there too, which makes a good dinner for 2 for about 1500 kronur. (Eating in Reykjavik is outrageously expensive)
We found the staff to be very courteous, helping us make local phone calls to sort out our rental car, booking the Flybus to the airport, and very knowledgeable on organizing daytrips. There is a computer in the lobby with free internet service, though there is no time limit for users, and sometimes there is a long wait to use it.

Overall, we were very pleased with the hotel, especially since it was part of a package. It definitely exceeded our expectations. We would definitely stay here again if we went back to Reykjavik.

  • Liked — Location, free parking, ocean views
  • Disliked — Lots of school groups seem to stay here; teenagers could be noisy at night
  • Tips/Secrets — We had a great time traveling in the off-season; hardly any other tourists at the sights we went to.

We stayed in Fosshotel Baron room 410 (double, standard) for 2 nights.

GOOD POINTS. Location was very good, an easy walking distance from all the main attractions. Local shops were just around a corner. Our room was spacious and quiet. The breakfast was good and freshly baked pancakes were delicious. We were able to book our Blue Lagoon trip easily via reception. Staff were helpful.

BAD POINTS. Not many. We had a prepaid voucher where we requested a double room with an ocean view. Upon our arrival they had no record of us and gave us a twin room facing graffiti wall (room 421). Upon our request this was rectified right away and we got the largest room (I think) on our floor with a nice view. The beds were little too soft but my partner didn't seem to mind that. The water smelt of sulphur. By the way this is normal on this island with so much geo activity going on.

OVERALL. This is a good 3 star hotel and we felt happy to have chosen it.

The hotel is wonderful- clean, with a great location and an outstanding staff. The breakfast room is a little small, but the staff kept the buffet table well stocked. I realized several days after our stay that I had left a bag of souvenirs and a video tape of the first part of our trip in the room. I called and the receptionist went into the room to check, but, alas, could not find the items. Nearly a month later I received an email from that same receptionist. The items had been turned in, just mislabled. She sent them to me in America! What great service! We will most definately stay at this hotel again.
