“Excellent customer service and breakfast but needs a few tweaks”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

Just got back from a brilliant few days in Reykjavik. Stayed at the Baron as part of an Icelandair package.

Location
Excellent location close to the main shopping street and also the ocean. Ideal location for seeing everything in the city. 24/7 shop round back of hotel, Dominos next door and fast food restaurant across the road.

Room
Room was always warm and toasty. V dated furniture but I expected this from reading the reviews. Small but perfectly adequate size bedroom. Bathroom was tiny and had possibly the worst shower ever - small shower tray, fixed height shower head (shower caps were a necessity) and a shower curtain wrapped round that you had to be careful you had all of it inside the tray and stuck to the wall or you'd get water all over the floor. The shower would be better and less claustrophobic with a proper cubicle there. Hairdryer in bathroom was actually decent at drying hair.
Double bed was very comfy but very confused as to why we had a single duvet each and not a double duvet.
Only hotel I've ever stayed in where you have paper cups in your room for your tea/coffee.
TV had 3 British channels - Boomerang for kids, BBC entertainment and Sky News. Good variety but unfortunately they kept freezing so had to be reported to reception.
Really liked the view from my room as we were on the side of the hotel so could see the ocean and mountains one way and the city the other.

Cleanliness
Couldn't fault - always very clean.

Breakfast
Excellent choice of breakfast - cereals, fruit, waffles, choice of breads, pastries, sausage and weird omelette as well as various cheeses, meats and fish mixtures. The juices were nice and coffees good. My other half said he would have liked to have had the option of porridge but you can't suit everyone!
The early morning breakfast (at 4.30am) was also very good. Although not as much choice as above, it was still a lot more than I expected to have at that time of the morning.

Customer service
Staff were amazing - all friendly, knowledgeable with excellent English and a smile. Enjoyed being taught some Icelandic by the barman and the receptionists were excellent at sorting out trips, taxis, any problems etc

Facilities
Always a jug of water on reception - very refreshing.
Happy hour in bar was good and nice to relax with a drink at the end of a long day/before you go out.
Free wifi and a computer with internet in reception.
Loads of tourism leaflets to help yourself to.
Pick up for trips/Airbus from hotel so ideal.

Downfalls
Unfortunately, there were two elements of our stay here that affected our enjoyment. Firstly, arriving at the bar for a nice couple of relaxing drinks before bed on Friday night, we were greeted by a large party (about 16) of people in their late teens/early 20s. Very noisy chatter, occasional singing and when a couple of the girls started screaming, I got up and left the bar straight away as I couldn't stand the noise any longer. Other guests had already downed their drinks and left too for the same reason (with a couple wishing us luck on their way out). Obviously the groups noisiness was not the hotels fault, but nevertheless, I would not return to this hotel on a weekend again if these groups are normal as our planned relaxing night was anything but. Prob just getting old but was just too noisy for a hotel bar - more suited to a normal bar/nightclub.
The other downfall of the hotel is the noisiness of the room doors when they close. We were woken several times each morning (earliest at 4.30am) by people going on trips/to the airport/etc. Just as you drift back to sleep, someone elses door will bang and then you're awake again. I myself tried to shut the door quietly as I left early this morning and it doesn't happen. If I return to this hotel, I must remember ear plugs next time to ensure I get a full nights sleep.

Overall, ok rooms, exceptional staff, excellent breakfast and location. But remember to take earplugs! The customer service, location and breakfast makes this a 4*, as without these, the hotel would be very much average.

I stayed here for a long weekend in December with 3 other friends (2x twin room) and booked the hotel through a package deal. The hotel was basic but suited are needs, the rooms were clean and had enough storage/space, the breakfast was excellent (waffles!), the staff were very helpful and let you know promptly about whether northern light excursions were cancelled etc. The hotel was only a 10minute walk from the town centre and I would definitely consider staying here again when on a budget.

As my first time in Iceland, the staff at the Baron were friendly, helpful and just awesome. They helped in every aspect of my trip. Internet access was very useful, and all the excursion operators pick up from the hotel. Breakfast was fantastic, and you have a 24 hour shop just behind the hotel. Main shops are just 2minutes away. Room was clean and beds very comfortable. When I next return, I will be staying here.

We stayed here on an Icelandair weekend northern lights break from 25th -28th January. Hotel is clean, comfortable and centrally located with nice views of seafront and mountains and easy walking distance to shops and restaurants. Our first room had a problem with the toilet not flushing, so we moved to identical room one floor above. We had been upgraded for free to a business suite, which had loads of room as had a sitting room and a bedroom plus bathroom. The one negative was the lack of decent lighting. The overhead light was by the entrance so didn't cover the whole room and the two lamps did little else to light the whole room. Doing hair and make up could be a challenge! Also the rooms are a bit bland but it is 3 star, so not expecting luxury! Breakfast as other guests have said is excellent. You can fill up enough to last most of the day! Good selection. Can be busy at peak times! Hotel staff were always helpful with advice and tour booking.
Tours are excellent and well organised, with hotel pick up. Sadly with one attempt to see northern lights over our weekend there, we didn't see them. Too cloudy on two of the nights and not clear on the last night when we went out. They really do try to find somewhere for you to see them and the lady on our bus was lovely and genuinely seemed sad we hadn't managed to see them. Will just have to visit again! There is so much to see and do. Blue lagoon is a great trip but try to take your own towel or just rent a towel and not a bathrobe as well, as it is very expensive to hire either or both!

Room Tip: Sea view is worth having and the higher up you are the better the view. We were on the 5th floor.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to review our Hotel and for your positive feedback. I am glad you did enjoy our breakfast buffet and that our location was convenient for you. Our staff is there to help our guests with whatever they might need so I am happy to see you booked tours and got advice from our front desk.

I apologise for they lack of lighting in the room, and over these darkest months when there are few hours of daylight this of course is no good at all. I sure hope you did manage to get the hair and make up done in these challenging conditions! There are 2 or 3 of our larger rooms that have this problem because of the electronic outlets are to few. It has been somewhat of a problem getting this fixed but it I assure you and others reading this that it will be done.

Too bad you didn´t get to see the nothern lights but hopefully you will get a chance to see them later as they can be quite breathtaking.

Again thank you for your feedback
Best Regards from Reykjavik

Perfect location for a trip to Reykjavik. There is also a supermarket right next door. The rooms are very clean and the breakfast is EXCELLENT! Fresh fruit, pastries and toast, rolls, cheese, meats, omelette and sausages, fruit juices and make your own waffles = first class breakfast. My only criticism is the bedding ( duvets and pillows) were well past their best and needed to go in the bin. The pillows were smelly and old and I slept with a towel wrapped around it. I was in room 226 if the hotel management are reading this! Apart from that, the hotel is perfect so please invest in new bedding!

Booked this hotel through Icelandair. It was very central to Reykjavic town. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet was excellent - great choice of foods. They even had food and hot drinks for us when we were departing at 4.30am !! Clean, warm rooms. Lots of information available about surrounding area and trips. Definitely would stay here again.

Booked package through Icelandair which has great systems for booking flights, hotel and trips together which is less risky . Chose Fosshotel Baron as one of the centrally located hotels on offer. I feel a central location is essential in Reykjavic in the winter. Hotel staff were all friendly and really helpful. Overall the Fosshotel Baron is a good 3-Star quality with good quality buffet breakfast and within easy walk of city centre shops and many bars and restaurants. Rooms are all you need. Free wifi in bar/restaurant areas which is great but chargeable at reasonable rates if used in rooms. Also hotel is 100 metres from ocean with spectacular views across to snow covered mountains. Missed Northern Lights as only appear around 100 nights each year so even in the right time of year it only averages 50:50 chance. Nothing to do with hotel but tourists should be prepared to enjoy the other spectacular and interesting places if on a Northern Lights Break - as we were. No hesitation in recommending for a good value, friendly, clean 3 Star hotel
