“Almost new hotel, old world service”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

We visited a dear friend who resides in Reykjavik and stayed in the hotel. It is a recently converted paint factory right alongside the harbor in downtown area. While a bit apprehensive about the language differential, we were relieved to find most people there spoke fluent English and were very accommodating in every respect. The rooms were a bit on the small side, and furnished a bit sparsly in " early Ikea" design..... but quite clean with very comfortable beds and flat screen TV. The programs were multi-national with few in English. The baths were a bit different with a shower area enclosed with a curtain over a drain, but plenty of hot water. The restaurant on the first floor is a bar/pub style with good service and a small but tasty set of offerings. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet each morning with a surprisingly wide selection of local and friendly alternatives. It was here I was introduced to SKYR, a yogurt style dish that I am still searching for in Florida! Loved the salmon, breads, salads, and a few items that while very tasty, were not identified. The location is right in the heart of the downtown area and convenient to most attractions. The staff is very friendly and helpful in every respect, possibly because our host friend was a retired Government Minister there. . Remember, your Euros and Stirling are not good here.... you must convert to the local currency or use your credit cards.... accepted everywhere we went.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the harbor side for the best views.

Hotel is very nice and clean, with a fun design. Great location which is close to everything a tourist would want to be near. I actually liked that it wasn't right in the heart of the shopping area. The staff is EXTREMELY friendly and welcoming, particularly the kitchen and bar folks...I cant stress enough how kind they were. Food is very good, some of the better meals we ate while in Reykjavik (which unfortunately has some very, very bad food all over). I was surprised how popular the bar is with locals...I think we were the only hotel guests there around 9pm on a Friday. Get an Old Cuban cocktail, by the way.

Be warned about the following: the bathrooms are hysterically small, and I think there are nicer showers in most prisons. There is very little storage space for clothes. Finally, and this is the one I dont get, the blinds do a poor job of covering the windows...not fun in the middle of the summer with clear skies. I wish they would invest a little more in total blackout shades, it would be worth the money.

Still, I would highly recommend it.

We were a bit hesitant after reading the previous reviews but quite happy with the size of the room. Bathrooms are definitely not that small! The bar downstairs is cool but we couldn't get a table to done! Staff quite helpful. I would stay here again

The Icelandair Marina hotel's rooms are tiny, but as they remind you: you're not supposed to spend that much time in it! Bring an eyemask if going in summer, the blinds dont fully block out the sun. The marina location is perfect for whale watching and boat tours, but a bit of a walk to the bars and restaurants. That doesn't much matter though because the hotel's cocktails are terrific, especially liked the "Reykjavik Summit" bourbon drink topped with smoked tea.

Room Tip: The lower floor rooms by the road have traffic noise, honking

The previous reviews (both positive and negative) are all accurate in their way; this is quirky property with some features that will not appeal to everyone. My 9 year old daughter and I, on the other hand, generally loved the hotel. The location is spectacular and the view over the marina dry dock to the mountains beyond, if you book a marina view room (and you should), is unique. I didn't care for the bathroom -- the problem wasn't so much the frosted glass, which is certainly not see through, but rather the fact that the sliding door does not fully close. The curtains also do not cover the windows fully, which was an issue for us in the June perpetual daylight. That said, the downstairs areas are very fun, the beds are comfortable, the vibe is relaxed and playful, and again, I cannot think of a better location for anyone who enjoys the water or plans any activity on the water such as fishing or whale-watching along with the usual sightseeing in town.

I crack up reading some of the negative reviews. Yes, the rooms are small but unless you go to a business hotel or luxury hotel and pay those prices, it's perfectly adequate. Their signs addressing the "smallness" are hilarious. As for the bathroom, only a toilet fetishist would find a lack of privacy. The frosted sliding door is fine unless you are peering in from a centimeter away. The restaurant and bar are first rate--yes, they are expensive but that's Iceland. I agree with the comments about the staff--they absolutely bend over backwards. I heard some extremely silly questions answered with politeness and dignity and yes, the water is safe to drink from the tap.

We stayed for four nights as part of an Icelandair Whale Watching trip and had a fabulous stay. Friendly, helpful, polite staff, excellent breakfasts, spotless and very comfortable, cosy room with a great shower and Icelandic herbal bathroom products. We had a room at the front with views over the marina and to snow capped mountains. No complaints at all.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the marina.
