Owner description: THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ICELAND Iceland's leading art museum, established in 1884. Its collection consists mainly of 19th, 20th and 21st century art.

Museum offers a great overview of Icelandic and Scandinavian art with the biggest draw a room devoted to Munch-The Scream. Samuelsson designed the very modern building which operates independently. Nice café and gift shop.

Largely impressionistic works for lack of a better term..... some were quite macabre. Since I like Munch's works I was enthralled.

Don't waste your money coming here. A beautiful light and airy building with limited and poor contents. The art on exhibit when we went was either macabre, pornographic or just boring.

Was interesting and in some ways stimulating but mainly didn't enjoy the art on display. Staff person on reception wasn't overly friendly either.

Art is obviously something very personal but with a title like The National Gallery of Iceland you expect to find something to your taste
The large room containing two giant size embroidered hangings depicting women's genitalia set the scene. Another room with a few scattered open wooden boxes may have been great art but we couldn't see it.
The museum is tiny and will probably appeal to those who enjoy the way out.
Unfortunately within ten minutes we had seen it all and seen enough
