“Unique Sculptures - Not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2012

Einar Jónsson(1874-1954) made meaningful sculptures noticed for everything from their size to to a twinkle in an eye. How do you sculpt remorse or the battle with old age? How do you show biblical experiences, or meaningfully remember a major airliner crash? Stunningly, Einar Jónsson does. Some of his work were years in the making. May I suggest you allow ample time to quietly soak up the atmosphere and study the detail of each piece. While the museum is not always open the garden behind it is - accessible from next street - and generously scattered with some of the artists best work. Make the most of your experience.

Do not miss this garden outside Jonsson's former home. It's free and fabulous.

“Great sculpture garden - can skip the museum”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2012

The sculpture garden is beautiful, and free! Definitely worth a 20 minute stroll either before or after you visit Hallgrimskirkja (1 minute away).

I was less impressed with the museum (which has an admission fee of around $4). It contained many paintings, none of which were as good as the sculptures, and many plaster versions of the sculptures we'd already seen in the garden. The top floor of the museum is Einar Jonsson's old home, but is nothing special or different (just some early-1900's furniture).

When I visited the main museum was closed but the garden was open. It was absolutely beautiful.
