This iconic building was opposite our hotel, so left it until our last day to pay it a visit. What a stunning building. Absolutely a must!!. The building is huge with a high graduated tower which can be seen throughout Reykjavic. For a small fee you can take the lift up to the top of the tower and the views are stunning. You have a panoramic view of the town and surrounding area. The church is open daily and although it has many visitors it does not feel crowded. Well worth the visit

The church looks like it is about to take off to the heavens. it is shaped like a rocket. It is very simple yet stunning inside with an extremely loud organ. There is a lift (for a small fee) to the top of the tower then a few steps. The views are breathtaking. The bells! The bells! On the hour they deafen you if you are at the top.

Our hotel was right across the road and the Hallgrimskirkja was our view from the window. It is a very impressive building which lights up at night. when we were there it was a music festival week so during the evening a concert took place, during the afternoon they were rehearsing and the acoustics in the magnificent hall was amazing. Up the lift to the bell tower, there are some round windows then up to the top, be prepared it is very windy in the bell tower but the view of Reykjavik are stunning, it is so pretty, with all the different coloured roof tops and snow capped mountains in the distance.

This church is a major landmark in Reykjavik and well worth the effort of walking up the hill to photograph it and look inside.

Inside the church organ was being played and the beautiful music really added to the atmosphere. It is a very modern, uncluttered church and worth a look around. In the lobby there is a water feature with droplets falling from the ceiling into a bowl which is lit from behind.

There is no charge to enter the church but they do ask you to buy a ticket to access the tower via lift and this is just a few Euros. Tickets are available from the church shop just inside the door where they also sell post cards, CD's and a few other gifts. When you arrive at the top you have to take a flight of stairs to the viewing gallery.

The tower is so worth a visit as you get amazing views of the city below from four different sides.

Above the viewing gallery the church bells are hanging and when they chime it is very loud.

Don't miss the chance to visit.

It dominates the skyline and as you get closer it really towers above you. But, when you get inside it's austerity becomes simplicity and the overwhelming sense is that of calm. We were lucky to hear the organ being played and that is an amazing piece of engineering and a sculpture in its own right.
