Whilst my wife and I visited Reykjavik we visited the Hallgrimskirkja church. The church is visible from all over the city. Take a walk up one of the many streets leading to church and browse the numerous shops or stop for a coffee & cake.
The church was under some renovation so we were unable to visit the main part of the church but for around £5 each you can get the lift, then 2 flights of stairs to the top of the 244ft (74.5) tower.
On a clear day the view from the top is gorgeous with views all over the city of Reykjavik and the nearby hills. We went up in the dark (the church closes at 5pm) and in daylight for a different perspective. A visit to Hallgrimskirkja church is an absolute must when you visit Reykjavik.

This is a very impressive building and is somewhat symbolic of REYKJAVIK if not ICELAND. The architecture is amazing and the building is a work of art in itself - outside and inside (outside especially). Hard to miss this site because it is very prominent. Take the time to go.

Hallgrimskirkja is undoubtedly the most photographed building in Iceland and worth a visit anytime you are in this wonderful city. You can't miss this church as it almost overpowers the city. Contrary to what one might think, Hallgrimskirkja is not a cathedral; Reykjavik's tiny Lutheran cathedral in the city center. Hallgrimskirkja is a place of wonder and calm; enter, walk halfway down the aisle and sit for a while. You will feel the building's power as well as its peaceful ambiance. No visit to this church is complete without taking the elevator to the tower (cost 600 IS Kr, about $5.00 US). On a clear day you will take literally dozens of photographs of this amazing city. I would recommend attend attending a service, if only to hear the amazing organ. Unfortunately, the organ is being cleaned at the moment (January, 2013) and will be out of commission until late spring. A visit to Hallgrimskirkja is an absolute must.

For a small fee you could go up in the lift to the top and look at the views in all directions. The inside of the cathedral was open to look around too

We visited here during our trip to Iceland. Stunning church! We went to the top of the tower and the views were stunning. Very windy so would recommend wrapping up warm but well worth it!
