Owner description: At The Settlement Exhibition in Adalstraeti visitors can experience the settlement of Iceland in late 9th century through two remarkable exhibitions. The Settlement Exhibition revolves around an excavated site, the actual remains of a Viking Age longhouse that have been preserved in situ. The exhibition gives an invaluable insight into the life and times of the first people to inhabit the Reykjavik area and the ways in which they adapted to their new environment. The exhibition is founded on archaeological and other scientific research and introduces visitors to the latest facts and interpretations forwarded by a range of experts who have concentrated on this period of our history. Settlement Sagas comprises some of the nation's most renowned documents, many of them written in the twelfth century but relating events that go back as far as 874 AD, when the first settlers are said to have come to Iceland. Recognised by UNESCO as having outstanding cultural value These two exhibitions hosted by the Reykjavik City Museum afford an unprecedented view into the origins of Icelandic culture. One is based on archaeological findings from the days of the Settlement and the other on manuscripts documenting the same period. This is also the first time Iceland's literary heritage and archaeological history have been placed side by side for the general public. In addition, the preservation of these precious manuscripts is one of the reasons why UNESCO officially designated Reykjavik as a City of Literature in 2011.

Loved it! A real gem. Really interesting - would imagine it's also good for school kids of a certain age. Allow a good hour for the visit.

An interesting and not too big exposition about the time of the settlement in Iceland directly in the centre of Reykjavik.

What a wonderful recreation of life in early Reykjavik. For visitors over 67 years of age, admission is free

The exhibition tells a well produced, audioguide story of one of their most famous sagas. You may have also read it in your guidebook.
Otherwise there is nothing to see but modern wooden figures that do focus your attention on the story.
There are few restaurants in town, and we were hungry when we finished. They had a pasta item on the menu which sounded good, and I asked if they would prepare the gluten free pasta I always travel with. No. The first time in years a restaurant has turned me down. There were no other customers at the time. Just No.

This was great. Really brought alive the early occupation of Iceland. Lots of interactive displays even including a sniff of sea air at one point. A museum built around the main exhibit, a 10th C Viking Longhouse, underneath the streets of Reykjavic. Very friendly helpful staff and free cloakroom and lockers which is great when you've got loads of layers on. We were without kids on this visit but I reckon our 8 year old would have enjoyed it too.
