Six of us went in early on a Thursday night and were wary of the lack of people. By the time our first course came out, the place was pleasantly packed with non tourists. While it could get pricey, we loved ordering one small portion per person and passing each dish around. We were able to try whale, horse, salmon, crab, hearts of lamb, and cod. Each bite was perfect. We had just hit the acclaimed hot dog stand before the meal, so even though the portions were not meant to be single size, we were very happy.

My husband and I are foodies, so I researched and found "The Reykjavik Grapevine's Best Dining of 2012" article online. Forettabarinn was listed as 'best newcomer restaurant' and we were psyched to see that this little place is located right across from the Icelandair Marina hotel, where we stayed.

The food is considered "starters" (tapas) and are affordable, Icelandic and- um- awesome. The menu was varied- there were some great vegetarian options, as well as great (interesting?) meat and seafood entrees: whale, lamb hearts, horse, mussels...

The space has a cool design- high ceilings and a bit industrial and artsy though with white painted chairs and accents of yellow and teal. Nice lighting and seemed that there were a variety of different locals there- a larger party celebrating, a couple of women who looked like they were doing business, a couple of people on dates and a table of hip guys having a bite before hitting the town.

Go here. You won't regret it!

We tried some of the top restaurants in Reykjavik during our stay there, but this is hands down the best meal we had, no other restaurant even came close. The service was excellent and the food was just fantastic. Do not miss this gem!
