“Well positioned if not always well appointed”

The hotel is fairly central to town, located directly opposite the impressive church of Hallgrimur which is visible across most of the city and where is an excellent landmark if you lose your bearings and are trying to get back to base. It only takes five minutes to walk to the very centre of the shopping and dining area of town and you could walk to the BSI bus station in ten to fifteen minutes if you needed to.

The staff on reception were all friendly and efficient. They'll gladly confirm your bus transfer reservations, book excursions, arrange a taxi etc without any problem. In fact Iceland in general seems to be very tourist friendly with hotels and tour operators working closely together to make it as easy as possible for tourists to see and do all that they want. It's great for the traveller and, of course, beneficial to the Icelandic economy in helping to encourage business.

We had room 406 on the top floor of the hotel. Be aware that the hotel does not have a lift so you will have to take your luggage upstairs yourself. If this is an issue it may be worth requesting a room on a lower floor. Rooms with even numbers seem to be at the front of the hotel facing the church, odd numbered rooms seem to be at the rear and presumably face the town, river and mountains - having not been in them I can't vouch for the view but as the hotel is in an elevated position I imagine the view from the top floors may have been good. Our room was small, furnishings were basic and a little worn but it was in generally good decorative order and clean. The windows could do with a good wash though. It was low on frills - no refreshments, room safe, hairdryer, minibar etc - but this is reflected in the price which is low in Icelandic terms. You can have as much free tea, coffee and hot chocolate from the vending machine in the reception/restaurant area though. Breakfast is reasonable and includes cereals, yoghurt, meat, cheese, salad vegetables, toast, waffles, preserves etc as well as drinks. It's not spectacular but it's enough to keep you going.

On the whole this is a decent enough option and represents good value in what is a very expensive destination for most overseas visitors. If I were to go back I'd happily stay here again.

I will cover specific excursions in other reviews but I'll give some brief tips here as well.

If visiting the Blue Lagoon try to arrive in the morning when it is quieter as it gets busier around lunchtime. Also, it is best to try and book any treatments you want in advance as they can be fully booked if you try to do it when you arrive.

If you want to hire a car to visit the glacier lagoon (Jokulsarlon) then allow at least five hours each way for the journey. Not many tours operate out of season so hiring a car is a cheaper option even with the cost of fuel. The road surface is good and traffic sparse but be prepared for variable weather conditions. The landscape on the journey is diverse and often spectacular.

We booked our Northern Lights tour with Superjeep (www.superjeep.is) and they were very good. They are much more expensive that the coach tour offered by Reykjavik Excursions (RE) but they are less likely to take you out when the weather conditions are less favourable for seeing the lights. Superjeeps postponed our tour on a cloudy evening while RE still went out and the lights were not seen and there are quite a lot of poor reviews for their coach tour. Obviously there's no guarantee of seeing the lights no matter how much you pay though.

The hotel is comfortable enough and clean and the staff are friendly and helpful but it really could do with some money spending on it. The stair carpet had been patched where it had worn and paint was worn off in a number of places. Our room was OK as we were literally using it just as somewhere to sleep but the TV didn't work and the railings on the balcony at the rear had rusted away. On the plus side, the hotel is very well placed to explore Reykjavik by foot and easy to find your way back to as it is opposite Hallgrimskirkja church which can be seen from all over the city, the buffet breakfast was good and hot drinks are free and available all day.

Room Tip: Try to get a room looking towards the church and on the first or second floor

Basic hotel but not a basic service and the location perfect for walking around the city. Rooms are small and shortage of headroom up in the eves could be a trial for some but not us. Everything worked and the efficient heating kept things warm and comfortable. The staff were all very helpful and all excursion pickups worked very well. No we did not see the Northern lights, they were there but so was the cloud. The golden circle trip was well worth it. If you do stay here remember to walk across to the church clock tower and take the lift to the top the views are worth the small charge and Iceland churches are always beautifully warm. Walking around Reykjavik can be something of a challenge but the everyone is very welcoming and the Harpa (concert hall) provides a warm haven with great views.

Room Tip: Avoid top rooms if you are tall.

The hotel has small basic rooms, could do with a bit of a refurb as interior bit scruffy and worn. Staff were helpfull. Buffet breakfast which was adequate with cheese ham , eggs , cereals etc, children loved the waffle machine. The on tap coffee, very good tea and hot chocolate was very welcome as you could make full use of this after coming in from the cold. The hotel is in a good location ,opposite the cathedral and within walking distance of the shops and restaurants and also the old harbour.
Although basic I would probably use this hotel agan as the good points outweighed the negatives. We were not fortunate enough to see the lights so we could be coming back to Iceland.

We stayed here for 4 nights as part of the Northern Lights package booked through Icelandair. Ironically we didn't see the lights due to the weather, just luck of the draw but a good reason to return.

We stayed in room 401 which had a pitched roof, after the first couple of bumps we adapted pretty well. We were facing the back of the building, no view of the church but we did not find this a problem, we don't tend to spend our time staring out of the hotel window. The room was not massive but there was enough space to store everything without it feeling crowded. Two single beds pushed together to make a double, which were nice and comfy. Small but adequate wet room, yes the shower curtain was a bit annoying but these annoy me wherever I stay and it was not a big problem. No hairdryer in the room but they're available at reception.

Wifi access in our room was patchy but dramatically improved on our last day, this was not a problem as wifi is pretty much free everywhere in Iceland & we were able to use it in the communal area downstairs. All the staff were very helpful, breakfast was good, 24h tea, coffee and squash was a nice touch.

We booked all of our trips through Reykjavik excursions when booking the holiday through Icelandair, however, you are able to book everything very easily through reception while you are there with guidance from the staff if required. The staff kept us informed when our Northern Lights trip was cancelled twice & then when it was running.

We only used Reykjavik excursions and found them to be excellent, we used their Flybus service, Northern Lights tour which we eventually got to go on but no lights to be seen, Golden circle tour and Blue Lagoon. We were collected from our hotel 30 mins before the trip start time and taken to the central terminal then returned to hotel at the end. This all ran very smoothly and we were impressed with their efficiency. We would definitely use them again.

Despite missing out on the Northern lights, we had a very enjoyable trip to Iceland. Being able to book and pay for everything in one go before we arrived definitely suited us and we were happy with the service from Icelandair and Reykjavik excursions and would certainly recommend doing this as it made the trip stress free.

In terms of the hotel, if you are looking for a reasonably priced, clean, friendly hotel close to the centre then you will not go far wrong with Leifur Eriksson. We would definitely recommend staying here and would stay again should we return to Reykjavik.

The staff couldn't do enough - providing bolt cutters when our case padlock broke! They spoke excellent English. Rooms, although small, were very clean and comfortable and warm. Coffee, tea etc available 24/7 in reception which proved to be a meeting point. Location was superb close to many restaurants. Breakfast was generally cold buffet. More than adequate and toast and pancakes available. We would certainly return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Front rooms overlook the church

Booked this hotel for four of us through Icelandair on a trip to see the Northern Lights! We had 2 rooms in the annex and our windows looked out onto the church-wonderful!The rooms were clean and warm and perfectly adequate for our 5 night stay.
The breakfast was included and was the usual continental with waffles and was plentiful. The hotel has tea, coffee and hot chocolate available 24/7 and even had breakfast available for our early start to airport at 4.30am!This was very welcome as there was a blizzard that day! They also serve toasted sandwiches throughout the day and evening for 450k.
We loved the location of his hotel and would most definitely stay here again if we returned. It is v close to the shops, harbour and of course the wonderful church.
Do not take any notice of those who say 'avoid the annex'. It is absolutely fine! Also, the staff on the front desk are v accommodating and helpful-you'll be in good hands if you stay here!

Room Tip: The annex rooms overlooking the church have great views!
