“Could not do better than this hotel”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

When we arrived late afternoon on a Sunday we discovered a problem with our reservation. The young woman at the front desk did everything she could to meet our needs and was very concerned that we were treated fairly, and were comfortable as could be under less than ideal circumstances. They had only 2 double rooms left and neither were really nice rooms but we were told that they would move us the next morning which they did. The room was clean but tiny, dark and tired looking. It was more a cave than a room, but the next morning we were moved to what had to be a prime room: a third floor corner room, with a king sized bed, a view of the statue of Leif Elriksson and the magnificent church, Hallgrimskikirkja, across the street (one of the must sees of Reykjavik) with plenty of room and light. We were surprised at the size of the room and the view. When we checked out the owner insisted on giving us a partial refund on our rate because of the room we had been assigned on check in. The breakfast was varied, plentiful and very tasty. Coffee, tea and chocolate were available free 24 hours with a comfortable area to meet other guests and compare notes. The central location combined with the friendly helpful AND caring staff makes this the very first hotel one should consider when visiting Reykjavik. All hotels experience reservations problems but I have never had one handle the problems with the concern and caring that this hotel did. It would have been so easy for the young woman to adopt a take it or leave it attitude but see did not; she was very concerned and cared that they had made a mistake leaving us with less than a good choice. I will stay there if ever in the city again, I would recommend this hotel to any friend or anyone else seeking a good hotel with friendly, helpful and caring staff. A real A+++++++ hotel.

Room Tip: ask for room facing the church on 3rd or 4th floor.

The casual theme in the coffee house allows us to spend our valuable time chatting. We had marvellous breakfast time during our 7 days stay including a 5am breakfast on our last day before we check out for the airport. This is such a wonderful, good service hotel. Thumbs up.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in the old block, is nearer to the reception. But not much of a bother if you are given...

Ok, I recommend this hotel. Great location, great price, friendly staff etc, etc. However I would take issue with the absence of double glazing. I asked to be moved from my first room which was on the ground floor, overlooking the main street, because it was too noisy. The second room was the same, just quieter because it lay on the third floor, towards the back of the building and I had quiet neighbours. If you're a good sleeper it shouldn't be a problem.

This great little hotel is fantastic. Don't expect 5 stars or the luxury of a large hotel. Do expect a clean, tidy, friendly and family run hotel which oozes charm and character and is in a great central location for the city centre shops & restaurants.
We asked for a room on the top floor and was given room 402. The room was on the front of the hotel with awesome views of the cathedral opposite. The only down side to the room, was the sloping roof restricting movement (especially when your over 6ft tall). That said, if you can overcome this, the room was nice but small. No kettle in room but free coffee etc from machine in downstairs restaurant area.
Breakfast is self service, but like everything in this hotel, it's small but neatly presented.
We had a fantastic 3 night stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for something small and quaint. We will be returning in 2013.

Room Tip: Try room 400 on top floor. It's facing the cathedral and will have great views.

What a great hotel! We chose it for it's central location and couldn't fault it, our room overlooked Hallgrimskirkja, the cathedral that can be seen all over Reykjavik. The room was spacious enough and cleaned every day. Yes, the bathroom is actually a wet room and is on the small side, but there was plenty of room to shower etc.

The staff are fantastic, helpful and are very knowledgable about where to go, what the pickup time for any trip is. They booked our return journey on the flybus, nothing was ever too much effort for them.

The breakfast was fine, cereals, meat, cheese, fish etc. There are free hot drinks and squash available 24/7.

I will definitely stay here again if I return to Reykjavik.

Room Tip: Room 313 had a perfect view of Halgrimskirkja.

This was our 5th trip to Reykjavik, 1st time in the Leifur Eiriksson. The hotel was perfectly adequate for our short break, comparable with others we have used in the same price range. There is ample free car parking opposite the hotel. It was warm, clean and conveniently located 5 minutes' walk from the centre but far enough away not to be disturbed by the Icelandic nightlife which has kept us awake till 4am at weekends before now. Yes,as other reviewers have pointed out, the bathroom (a wet room, as are many in Reykjavik) was very small with a tiny basin, but all functioned well and after we had showered we put a used hand towel on the floor so there was no problem with wet feet when cleaning our teeth or using the toilet. There was not much storage in our room (a single wardrobe, one cupboard without shelving and two bedside tables between us) but this was ample for a short stay. The room was spacious with 2 chairs and a large table/desk. The carpet was not luxurious but cream curtains and bedding gave the room a pleasant feel. The breakfast was fine, somethhing for everyone, not the best we have had in Reykjavik but not the worst either, and the food was constantly being replenished. Tea and coffee etc are available all day. It was sometimes hard to find a table for breakfast, and the reception/waiting area was small but the staff were friendly and helpful and we would be very happy to stay in this hotel again. The trip up the church tower opposite is well worth a visit, with views over the city. From the church we also took superb pictures of the view towards the city centre with the Northern Lights swirling above - quite a vantage point. I have scored only 4 out of 5 for location simply because our room was in the annex across the road, which in bad weather means you have to get all togged up to go for breakfast! Nevertheless I would still highly recommend this hotel.

First of all I want to start off by saying I cannot believe this is only a 2 star! Yes it is very basic in some areas but its location and staff make up for it.
Staff are there 24/7 and always very helpful. Can recommend places to eat, visit etc and book all the local excursions for you. Very well organised.
It really is great value for what you pay!

Very clean & warm hotel.

People who have said on here about the drains smelling need to be re educated. This is a volcanic island and that (yes ok slightly unpleasant) smell you find when running hot water is the smell of the sulphur.
It is located right outside the beautiful cathedral and is in walking distance from all main areas of the town.
Will definitely be staying here again. Loved it.
