“Magical stay in Iceland”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014

We stayed at the Hotel Cabin for 3 nights. We were not sure what to expect as it was called a budget hotel but we were pleasantly surprised. We had decided to upgrade to a superior room which was on the top floor, we had really lovely views of the snow capped mountains. The room was warm and comfortable, had tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer and fridge (you don't get those in the deluxe rooms! I should also mention that some of the rooms on the top floor face the other way so the view will not be so good, worth checking. The breakfast was sufficient, cereals, fruit juices, toast/bread, jams, marmalade and peanut butter! Cold meat and cheese also fruit. We did not think there was food at the hotel but they did a set price all you can eat salad bar type food, huge selection of salad things, soup, fresh bread and 1 pasta choice. The Cabin hotel is on the outskirts so for us it was easier to eat there but 2 nights was plenty as it was the same all the time.
Staff were helpful, rooms were clean and the hotel also has a bar, reasonably priced considering.
All in all a pleasant stay and would use again.

Room Tip: If you want a bigger room with a few extras it's worth upgrading (about £20 a night), but be awa...

We stayed here for 5 nights and found it to be clean, funtional and comfortable for the price. The only drawback was the single beds so probably not the first choice for a romantic getaway. The hotel staff were very helpful especially when our bathroom flooded, they sorted out another room straightaway. Unfortunately we were stuck in a room with no external windows which meant that there was light coming in from the hallway which disturbed my sleep. The hotel staff were very understanding and moved us to another room for our last 2 nights. The hotel is about 30 mins walk away from downtown Reykjavik but it is a pleasant walk along the sea front when its not snowing. Otherwise the no.12 bus goes to the centre and costs 350 isk per trip, per person.

Room Tip: Get a room with an external window, not the inside rooms. Ground floor rooms are more noisy.

Firstly, the staff at the hotel are fabulous. They are very accommodating and if you have any questions, just ask and they'll be happy to help.

My twin room was on the 5th floor at the back. It was quite small but had everything you'd need, inc. a comfy bed.

The shower room was basic but nice. Definitely bring your own toiletries - shampoo etc. - as only a shower gel/ hand soap dispenser was provided.

Personally, I loved how easy and quick it was to adjust the radiator. So I never got cold.

The breakfast food was lovely on all 3 days. Range of cold meats, cheeses, toast, cereals and yoghurt.

It's a little bit of a walk to get into the centre, but the number 4 or 5 - picked up from outside the hotel- bus will take you there for 350kr and is quick.

Overall, not the most glamorous of hotels, but a great base from which to explore Reykjavik!

Dear Amsu100

Thank you for your review and your stay in Cabin hotel. Glad you liked the breakfast buffet and our great staff! :)
We know we are situated a further up from town but we have plenty of free parking places ( for rental cars) also a good location for scheduled bus tours as they all stop in front of our building and like you said it is always possible to take the bus a cross the street to down town area and back. I admit It can be a long 20-30 minutes walk for "tired legs" if it is cold outside but definitely worth it especially when northern lights are "dancing in the sky" :) so lovely! :)
Like you said our standard rooms are in fact small but fully equipped with breakfast included in the budget price. :)

We hope to see you again in Cabin! :)

Best Regards Klara

We have just returned from Iceland and stayed at the Cabin for four nights. The room was on the 5th floor, we had a great view of the mountains. The room was small more like a single cabin but warm and the two beds were very comfortable. Plenty of hot water for a shower. Towels changed everyday. Staff were very helpful and polite. Take your own Toiletries. Carpet a bit worn and paintwork could do with a touch up, tiles on floor in bathroom were cracked. For a larger room you need to ask to upgrade. Book your trips in the hotel shop on arrival with Bus Travel as they are the cheapest and great value for money, the driver/guide was excellent and a fountain of knowledge. Breakfast very good, we did not like the lunch as the food was laid out all day and was mainly salad. Food is expensive in Iceland approx £20 for two courses so you will need to shop around. Coffee 300-350kn. Blue Lagoon is approx 7,000kr for entry, costume and towel,if you eat in the restaurant it will cost approx 11,600kn for two there is also a coffee bar. There were children on a geography trip from Essex staying at the hotel, they were very polite and a credit to the school.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms above and including the 5th floor overlooking the mountains and the sea

Dear tattyhead

Thank you for your stay in Cabin and your review. Glad you liked our staff and our rooms (cozy, warm and a lot of hot water) although they are rather small but like you mentioned fully equipped with breakfast as well included in the budget price. :)

Unfortunately drinking and dining in Iceland is very expensive that is a fact :) but usually dinner portions are ample :)

Hope to see you again in Iceland :)
Best Regards Klara :)

We have recently returned from a short break at this hotel . We decided on a budget hotel and were pleasantly surprised. The room on the 4th floor was quite small but had a great view over the sea and mountains. It was clean and comfortable. It was also very warm despite sub zero temperatures outside. The hotel's location is about 20 mins walk from the city centre and 10 mins in the other direction is an outdoor geothermal swimming pool. Food at the hotel is basic but adequate. We had a couple of evening meals which consisted of soup, a hot meal, salads, fruit and coffee for a very reasonable price, especially in comparison with restaurant prices elsewhere.

This is a two star hotel, and it's not expensive at all. We booked this as part of a package deal with a group of thirteen. We weren't disappointed.
Rooms are clean, as are the bathrooms, breakfast buffet is sober but sufficient, and yes, there are groups of school children, but we asked for a room far away from them, and that's what we got.
So no complaints, I wouldn't hesitate booking again in this hotel. Icelandic 2 stars is easily 3 stars in other more southern countries.

Visited Reykjavik for first time so checked the Trip Advisor reviews for guidance. Wanted a cheap trip and Hotel Cabin seemed a great budget hotel. Having read some of the reviews we went prepared for a small room with no frills.
I emailed them in advance and asked for a high room with a sea/mountain view...and this is exactly what we got...gorgeous view. The Fly Bus shuttle was great-dropped us outside our hotel....and had free wifi. Straightforward check in-small compact room but perfectly functional and fit for purpose.....namely a base for travelling and somewhere comfortable to sleep. The hotel was kept immaculately clean. It was always warm and relatively quiet...some of the school groups were noisier than others but they often only stayed one night.
The rooms were cleaned every day and clean towels...and beds made...and changed every other day too. We took our own travel kettle and hair dryer as we had been warned in the reviews that these were not included. We took some coffee sachets and the restaurant were happy to give us some cups.
The reception staff were helpful and happily provided extra pillows and towels. The breakfast buffet was lovely-the staff kept it fully topped up all the time. A lovely selection of fresh breads, sweet and savoury and pastries.Cereals, muesli, yogurt, honey, stewed fruits and nuts and seeds. Cold meats and cheese, eggs, salad and a whole variety of dips and sauces and flavoured oils etc. tea, coffee, milk and juices as well as soft drinks dispenser..A fantastic start to the day (and we also made sandwiches to take out on our travels to keep us going) This was great as food in Iceland was very expensive.
The lunch buffet from 11.30 a 5 was 1400kr (about £7) and was great value. Similar to breakfast...salad buffet and fruit selection but also choice of 2 different hot soups each day and also one other main hot dish-one day it was cheesy pasta with ham, another chicken noodles. Similar after 5-dinner buffet 5-9-one evening it was swedish meatballs with potatoes and a berry sauce, another it was spaghetti bolognese. This was 1840kr ( about £10) and, compared to the price of food in the City...was very good value, if slightly limited in choice. As we had planned the trip on a tight budget, we ate dinner there the evening we arrived and also ate the lunch buffet one day before going out for a late night Northern Lights trip....it was perfectly adequate. If money was no object, Reykjavikis. Inundated with loads of restaurants covering all different cuisines and budgets...but even the cheap ones were quite expensive. Alcohol was VERY expensive and a bottle of wine often could double the bill!!
Beer was 900kr in the hotel (about £5) but they had happy hour every evening and it was 2 for 1 so great. Most bars in town had happy hours too but the alcohol was more expensive.
Hotel Cabin was in a great spot-as described in other reviews...facing the sea and a 30 minute walk along the scenic 'Saebraut' got you into the Town centre with lovely views. Alternatively, 3 buses stop right outside the hotel....4,5 & 12 and take you into the centre or a central bus station (Hlemmur) An all day ticket was 900kr and was great value-we went exploring all over with our ticket as the maps and bus routes were very easy to follow and were very regular and on time and the drivers were very helpful. You can get a bus ticket for single journey or all day from hotel reception and they were very informative about buses etc.
There is a bar and a small gift shop in the hotel which had lovely souvenirs at competitive prices. You could book all of your trips here in the shop too. They had loads of information leaflets for trips and maps and guides and things to do-this was great. All of the trips had specific pick ups and drop offs at hotel Cabin so we had door to door service ;-)
The large heated geothermal swimming pool down the road was fantastic-out of the door and turn right and then a minute walk down the main road brought us to the Laugardaslaug pool on the right. The equivalent of £3.50 to get in and open til 10pm so an absolute bargain. 50m outdoor and indoor pools at 38 degrees! free form pools, water slides and basketball hoops, and inflatables. Several hot tubs and jacuzzis at differing temperatures from 38-42degrees and a saltwater geothermal hot pot with seawater. A gym and also steambath and treatments available-perfect to unwind after a long day sightseeing.Wished we could have gone more than we did as it was very relaxing and refreshing.
I personally cannot say enough good things about hotel Cabin-do your research-know what you are getting and it delivers everything it promises. You get what you pay for-if you want king sized beds and plush lounges etc....then pay those prices. If you want a good clean warm room for a few nights then this is perfect.
I could say so much more......but I've got to leave you something to have to find out for yourself ;)-
Stay here and be realistic....it will serve you well if you are on a busy, budget sightseeing trip.

Room Tip: High floor facing the sea and mountains-you will get some road traffic noise but this didn't bot...
