“Excellent but compact and bijou”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2008

We stayed at Hotel Cabin last month for 3 nights as part of a package booked through Icelandair. Cleanliness of rooms could not be faulted. Excellent room if anything, a bit compact, also no tea/coffee facilities or hairdryer in room.

Hotel cannot be faulted on location or ease of access to the downtown area and its attractions. Transport from hotel to excursion departure points is provided and on return you can be dropped back at your hotel.

Over the road there is a convient petrol station, selling ample provisions and they also have a Subway sandwich store. Perfect for cheaper snacks.

The breakfast buffet included in the price is the perfect start to a days sightseeing.

All in all an excellent mini break.

Top Tip: Take the Relaxing Blue Lagoon trip on your last day and excellent way to relax and prepare for your flight home.

We stayed in the Cabin Hotel between 28/03/08 and 31/03/08 as part of an organised trip by Iceland Air. The hotel is about 40 mins coach ride from the airport and 15 min walk to the city centre (along the Smokey Bay harbour side which have the most outstanding views).

We had originally booked one of the standard twin rooms but to our surprise upgraded to a deluxe at no extra charge due to the other rooms being used by university students (whom we never saw). The room was spacious and appeared to have been recently refitted. It contained a flat screen TV with various satellite channels, a fridge, plenty of wardrobe space and comfy beds. The bathroom was a good size and modern with a very powerful shower and heated towel rail.

The staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English. They were more than willing to book excursions on our behalf and were very professional when dealing with a problem with our bedding.

The breakfast is the usual European continental fair (cheeses, meats, cereal and boiled eggs etc) but set you up well for the day ahead. We stayed for the dinner one night which was a good quality salad bar at reasonable price (by Icelandic standards).

Overall this is a good quality hotel that is an excellent base for a fantastic country.

3 star standard at least, and we booked a package through Icelandair. I'm a regular traveller for business and have stayed in many classier places that have not matched this for service, value & cleanliness. The room we were in had recently been refurbished and was spotless. The view across the bay was great and the 10 minute walk into town was really good with loads to see on the way.
Having read some reviews here i was a little hesitant, but this was a fantastic weekend break in a really friendly country. I'd recommend it to anyone - and i don't do that lightly.
My advice though is hire a car - you see so much more of the real Iceland that way - and it really is so quiet on the roads.

10/10 to Icelandair & Hotel Cabin

By Reykjavik standards this Hotel is cheap but the standard of accomodation isn't if you get a superdeluxe room which is equivalent to a standard hotel room. The rooms are clean, tidy and modern. I say that my room had been refitted recently. The bathrooms are abit small but they are fine for a average sized person. The rest of the accomodation is about standard hotel size. The breakfast is cold buffet style. Everything is edible but not inspiring. The reception staff were Ok but abit hard work. You could get what you wanted but it took abit of an effort. As others have said there is Subway opposite the hotel and the garage as a small supermarket attached as well. There's a larger supermarket a couple of hundred metres to the left when you exit the hotel on the same side of the road as the hotel. The main drawback of the hotel is the distance to the main street of the city. It took us about 20 mins to walk there so it kept us fit. If you can afford to stay in the city centre then try a hotel there, however, if you are on a budget then and prepared to walk into the city centre then this hotel will be fine for you.

  • Liked — Value for money accommodation.
  • Disliked — Distance to city centre (if it was half the distance this hotel would be very good value).

We took the deal offered by Icelandair for 3 nights, price of 2. 21st - 24th Feb 2008. Fly from Heathrow to Keflavik, 40 min transfer to Reykjavik. Staying at the Cabin Hotel, Reykjavik, B&B with a Northern lights tour on the Friday evening included.

Hotel for a couple/group/single, hitting the sights and spending all day out and about is just the ticket. If your looking for a hotel + the frills this ain't it.

Reception staff very helpful, phoned up to confirm a Golden Circle tour we had booked for us and were very pleaseant.

Rooms are small, not a lot of storage space and depending where your room is located the view can be very disapointing. Clean and tidy, all bathroom bits worked (no hair dryer) and we didn't ask for one, but did ask for extra pillows and they were brought to us within 5 mins. Duvets excellent as were the beds. We made the fatal mistake of turning the heating up a notch, it was a little chilly outside, but boy, we got back in the evening to an oven, door open, heating off, phew.

Breakfast is your usual cold buffet cerals, cheese, ham, eggs etc, plenty of coffee tea, ready for the sightseeing trips ahead.

A small bar and reception area, well used by trippers in and out. on the whole a Hotel for a Iceland excursion base.

The resturant also has a evening menu that although not the most exhilerating does fill a gap, at a very reasonable price for Iceland. Kr1500 each, sounds a lot but wait till you get outside in the center of Reykjavik !!

24hr supermarket, out main door of hotel, turn left, cross the road, and there you are. 2min walk.

Petrol stn and a Subway outlet across the road for bits and pieces.

We did find a lunch time venue in the habour area down Tryggvagata (that's a road name) GOTT STEIKHUS, near to the library, very reasonable, it is based on quick meals burgers and alike but its worth a trip during your city walk about.

Iceland, well worth the trip, super scenary, geysirs and all.

I have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Cabin hotel. While it's true the rooms are tiny they are at the same time clean and comfortable. There is a good selection of English channels to watch on the small television provided and a good shower so all in all not a bad lot for the price considering Icelandic prices. Now for the bad part; I had my money stolen from in the bar area of the hotel on my first full day there. While the bar man was very apologetic there was nothing the hotel could or indeed even offered to do. More worrying was the fact that the hotel has no CCTV or any other type of security camera so if something far worse were to happen you would have no proof. This person it seems may have just walked in off the streets and because we were unable to see his face he could just as easily do it again. I can say for certain that it was a man as I saw him for a couple of seconds out of the corner of my eye. Also be warned that if excursions and tours are cancelled or changed reception do not call the rooms to inform guests of these changes; as I found out when the Northern Lights tour was cancelled on both nights due to bad weather. Lastly, do not book a return air bus ticket if you plan to take the Blue Lagoon/Airport excursion on your last day. I did just that and found I could not get any type of refund as I had already paid for the journey to the airport. All in all a disappointing short break. While Iceland is interesting I'm not sure I would recommend it for anything more than a few days as to really get the most out of the place you need to take the organised excursions and this is very expensive. Have to now decide where next best to go to try to see the Northern Lights!

We stayed here for 2 nights ( should have been 3 but flight delayed because of bad weather) We found the staff very helpful and the quality of the food and accomodation excellent. The evening buffet meal was very good value as Iceland is expensive. The meal even included soft drinks and tea or coffee. The price for 4 meals converted to £36.
