“Good hotel, exciting city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2012

Good hotel outside the city centre. Little rooms, little bathrooms, but very clean, and nice view to the ocean. Breakfast excellent. Pleasant 20-25 minutes walk to Laugavegur, the main shopping street. Lot of sights in the city, Hallgrimskirkja, Perlan, Kristkirkja, beautiful little houses everywhere with coloured roofs. Wonderful view from the top of Hallgrimskirkja. Lot of excursions from Reykjavik, to Gullfoss, Vik, Grindavik, Akranes, Akureyri etc. Reykjavik is a sweet little town, sometimes cool, sometimes pulsing. Good shops, two big shopping centre, Smaralind and Kringlan. Kringlan is 15 minutes walk from hotel. Extra good fresh air everywhere. Very silent city, no metro, no trams, no rail, buses only. It was a nice holiday, and a pleasant hotel.

We stayed at Hotel Cabin in May 2012 as a part of our visit to Iceland. We found the hotel very convenient in terms of location & quality of the rooms. Here's our review in detail:

Location
Located in Borgartuni, the hotel is equidistant from the Reykjavik's main shopping street & the Kringlang mall. Both being a small 15 min walk (not sure why people mention 20 or even 30). Opposite the hotel, you got a gas station, Subway & a frozen yoghurt/smoothie bar. Amneties wise you are well equipped with so that's not a concern at all. At a 7 min walk, you have the Laugardalur swimming pool.

Room quality
There are 3 types of rooms - Standard, Deluxe & Superior. We booked deluxe and found the room spacious enough. Situated on the 6th floor, the view outside was good. The TV has a small selection of english channels so you won't get bored when inside. Sleep quality was excellent with no noise during our stay.

Hotel facilities
It has a restaurant with a reasonable selection of snacks. Wifi is free for those with a superior room. However, with a £5 simcard from Vodafone, you get a 1GB data allowance so internet couldn't be an issue. There are lots of brochures for tours incase you wanted to book something. The receptionist would also be glad to book something on your behalf.

Overall, we found the hotel very good.

The hotel was OK. The room we had was really small and so was the TV. But it was clean and there was hot running water which is the main thing for me. The hotel is about a 20 to 30 minute walk to the centre of Reykjavik which is fine with us as it didn't get dark until really later. But I can imagine it would be a bit of a hassle trying to walk back when it is pitch dark during winter. Breakfast was fairly the standard toast and cereal (there was no hot food). There is also a 24 hours supermarket about 5 minutes up the road which proved useful. Overall the hotel is sufficient and I would return if the price was right.

This 3 star property has all you need for a short visit to Iceland. I got a 3 night deal on Expedia for 65 pounds in a deluxe room. It was well worth the extra 4 pounds for the room as it had a fridge and bath. Entry level rooms don't. Internet is 15 euro for a FULL 24 hours access which was a little overpriced but normal for most things in Iceland. Breakfast is included which includes toast, ham, cheese, eggs, cucumber and tomato (all cold). They also run a decent buffet for lunch and dinner at the cost of 8 pounds. Salads soups soda and a hot meal are all included. If you are tempted by the convenience store across the road I'd recommend walking 3 minutes to the left of the hotel for far better prices. Staff are pretty helpful and will book any tour you choose. Do your research as there are quite a few different companies varying in price for tours.

Room Tip: Pay the extra 1 pound per night for a deluxe room.

We had booked a deluxe room, but they upgraded us to 7th floor where are the superior rooms. Sleep quality was excellent, the view was to the city (not to the sea tho) and the room had a huge window. The rooms on first and second floor did not look so good, so please make sure you request room from the top floor.

Breakfeast buffet was european style and everything for europeans. Good enough to get your stomach filled. Only con was that there was hair dryer missing from the room. But the hotel was great value. Less than 5 minutes drive from the central. You don't survive in Iceland without a car, or else you are going to miss a lot.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quiet and have a great view.

Ok so this is basically - you get what you pay for. Obviously it's a budget hotel but didn't expect it to be that basic. Very tiny room. Location is ok - walkable to city centre in 10 mins or so. Doesn't really matter if you have pick-up on tours every other day. breakfast is fine but the same every single day - only cold food. service is ok - people look bored there, you have to pay for internet which is always a pain.

Stayed here from 6th to 9th May 2012. Found the Hotel friendly, clean and more than adequate for a short stay, it is a 20 minute walk to the centre of town and is a really nice walk along the seafront. I had read that the rooms were small but I have to say that I found them perfect as all I wanted was a place to sleep. The Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and everything was fresh and well presented. I also had dinner there and found that that to be good value. I would reccomend this hotel for a short break.

Room Tip: Try to get a roon at the front as the views are well worth it
