We went on honeymoon (mature couple) and the hotel prepared our room with a huge heart of red rose petals, a bottle of bubbly, a bouquet of fresh fruits and a nice card.

The staff were exceptionally helpful and couldn't do enough to help us enjoy our stay; from copying tour documents to arranging a bus and snack breakfast at 4:45am. The hotel has a spa with jaccuzzi, sauna and steam room, a hair dresser and beautician. There's also a travel centre which arranged short notice trips without fuss.

The smoked fish and the thick yogurt at breakfast was great: I had it every day.

Position wise, the hotel's in a quiet area about 7-10 minutes walk into the centre; perfect. Reykjavik's a quiet gentle place so a pleasant walk back alongside the lake after dinner in the late evening, and there's just loads of good restaurants within walking distance.

It is not very often that I use words like these in my reviews in here, however, the stay at the Saga is probably the most disappointing hotel experience ever - and I have stayed many places. I could write a lengthy report, and I did so to the manager already, who just came back - very standardized - and outright apologized, but offered no form of compensation whatsoever. And this experience was something that called for more than just a standard, email apology. Manager never came back to my direct response to her - further to her initial, standard email.

It can all be boiled down to:

1. Hotel is old - fair enough. That can many times be charming, yet, not here. It is not being kept properly - light bulbs not working, for instance, are not changed. Leftovers from whatever construction project took place while we were there, were just left lying in the staircase. No one from the staff seem to care
2. We also happened to be staying at the Radisson Blu 1919, also located in Reykjavik, while we visited the country - and although the same chain and same hotel level, it is like two different worlds, whereas the 1919 is a much nicer place, with more - and much more professional - staff
3. Keycards continusly malfunctioned so that we could not get into our room! We obviously asked the receptionists for help, yet, blaming the computer system, they just asked us to go around the hallways and look for the cleaning personnel to let us into our room... What a help. And it happened continuously!
4. Check-in took over 30 minutes, because the staff could not figure out our reservation, which included a pre-ordered upgrade. No apologies offered when they finally figured out it was their fault
5. When we got to the room, it was not made ready - minibar was not full, chocolate lying on the table was beyond expiry-date, an extra bed was standing in the middle of the room, taking up space - and when the next-door room had a shower, it was like Central Station during rush-hour. And, yes, next-door happened to take showers at 3AM, which did not help...
6. Breakfast buffet was, sorry to say, horrible - again, compared to the 1919 - just nearby, same level, same chain - it is like two different worlds. Staff was super slow - took us 20 minutes just to secure a cup of coffee, and the quality of the food was very low. Lots of greasy stuff. Compared to the 1919, the buffet area is probably 3 or 4 times as big at the Saga, yet, the amount of staff is equal - and at the Saga they seem to be of a completely different level of professionalism.

This hotel cannot be recommended. The worn-out'ness etc. they are trying to compensate with attractive pricing, but, be warned per above. This is not a good place to stay while in Reykjavik.

Overall this was a reasonable enough place to stay, but its badly in need of a renovation.

The room was fairly spacious and furnishings, whilst again a bit dated were all comfortable enough. All service was supplied in an efficient friendly manner, so no complaints there. The restaurant served a great variety of 'international' and 'Icelandic' dishes which we would have enjoyed more had it not been for the prices.

Its a brisk walk into the centre of the city (say 1km) past a pretty small lake.

Other than its fraying edges, I'd be happy to stay here again.

Yes, the property is 'tired'-- the nice touches in the room remain, it needs to be updated. The mattresses are soft, the trouser press doesn't work, the furniture is chipped. But, the shower can be pres-set by temperature so every shower is automatically the right temp.
The location is not for everyone, but we loved the ten minute walk into town. The hotel was quiet yet convenient to a day of touring the city.
The people behind the front desk were professional and accommodating. They put our food in their fridge till our room was ready. They helped with touring information when it was not their job to do so. They were highly responsive to our needs.
And the breakfasts were wonderful--fully stocked from eggs to cheeses to cereals, etc. No lunch needed.
This hotel is a good value which is why it is chosen by many tour groups.

It is far away from the shopping areas. But very clean a d helpful staff. When getting the room, avoid the east facing rooms in the summer as the rooms get heated up like an oven and we had to open the door to let the cool air come in. I guess there was no air conditioning?
staff was very helpful in giving directions. food in the bar was ok and the breakfast buffet was ok in the morning. spa was very accomodating in getting me in for a massage late in the evening

Room Tip: avoid the east facing room due to the sun light in the mornings...the sun and the heat will wake you...

We arrived at 02.00 am 16 to 17 September and the receptionist on duty found our reservation , clarifying that it was with one big bed and no 2 separated single beds we wished to have. It was the last room in a hotel fully booked and it was 2 oclock in the morning. We refused to accept it. Two people we wanted 2 beds. we asked for at least for an extra bed , and he proposed us the sofa chair!! So one person in the bed and one spent the night in the chair!!! Unbelievable for hotel of Radisson chain. He invited me to have a look in the room and decide if we want or not the room.
We went to the room and we found the room had 2 beds !!!! close each other but separable. !! The breakfast was an other batle . No cups no coffe no and staff trying to clean the tables going 3 times in the kitchen to depose the used dishes , since they had no troleys to collect the dishes without going and comming. the food was almost disapeared from from the stands and we ask if more danish pastries are about to come .The cook said, no more for today. It was 09.00 ocklock!! Stay clear from this hotel no srvice and no good will to solve problems.

Room Tip: Avoid the hotel

Our first room was cramped with luggage for 3 weeks of travel, but on our return for some reason we were awarded a much nicer room. The breakfast is enormous with many kilos of smoked salmon, and the desk service was excellent.

Room Tip: Ask what is available.
