“We Loved Embassy Luxury Apartments”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2011

We stayed in apartment 110 in Embassy Luxury Apartments for the 5 days we spent in Reykjavik. It's difficult to imagine a better place to stay. The apartment is located in a residential area in central Reykjavik where, as the name suggests, many embassies are located. Although it is only a few minutes away from the center of this lively city, the area is quiet and attractive. Apartment 110 is located on the ground floor and consists of three spacious, well furnished rooms connected by a hallway. The kitchen is well equipped and we were able to prepare breakfast and lunch at home, while enjoying the local restaurants in the evenings. We enjoy walking and were able to visit the museums and sights of Reykjavik on foot, including a rather lengthy walk to Perlan. The staff at Embassy Luxury Apartments we courteous and helpful. We requested the transfer service from Keflavik Airport and were met on arrival and driven directly to the apartment. We had requested grocery service, so when we arrived we found the supplies we needed for breakfast and lunch. All in all, we had a great trip and would love to return.

Castle House offered us reasonable prices, the promise of multi-room apartment settings, and a nice location. And it delivered on all of those. The apartments have everyting you need and more. Clean, warm and spacious. Great beds and very quiet setting, behind a church and at the doorstep of the Gallery of Modern Art, right across the street from City Hall's pond and it is nicely located for nearly any Reykjavik desitination, 5 minutes from the center.
Our apartment (40) had a nice bathroom, bedroom, separate living room with breakfast table, and a fully equipped small kitchen. It had virtually every amenity you could ask for (coffee, satellite TV, etc.) If you're looking for some space and a nice change of pace (and a great location in Reykjavik), you can't go wrong with this place!

Castle House (Apt. 30) was our vacation home in Reykjavik for 9 days.
It is in the city centre but in a quiet neighbourhood next door to the Modern Art Gallery.
It was a convenient starting point for many day trips and activities.
Check in was very quick and problem free.
The apartment was very clean and everything you need for a holiday is provided.
Laundry was done on demand and that also always worked very well.
The beds were comfortable and more pillows were immediately delivered when requested.
They were quick to fix any small problem (a window did not close completely).
All in all we were very satisfied and will definitely stay on our next visit.

It was very unpleasant to hear bathroom noises, and toilets flushing, all night from nearby apartments. Then the people above us got up at 5 a.m., and we could hear every footstep, and them talking, using the bathroom, and taking a shower.
It was a very nice apartment and within walking distance to the BSI bus station for the airport FlyBus, and to the downtown area.
I researched numerous hotels in Iceland and we stayed at one other hotel. My recollection is that they all include the VAT in the quoted price; some would disclose the VAT, but still include it in the rate shown. Castle House does not. The website shows a "Total Cost" rate and then below says the rate is "subject to" the VAT; I assumed the VAT was included in the rate (Total Cost it says), like at every other hotel, and was surprised when my credit card was charged for more than the rate shown. In response to my email of complaint, I was told that the additional amount was the VAT. You will have to calculate the VAT in order to get a price comparable with other hotels.
When you make the reservation, your credit card will be immediately charged for the full amount of your stay. That is very unusual, and a big negative in my view.
Don't expect to get the apartment you reserve; our reservation was changed twice to what they claimed were equal or better apartments.
This is a minor point, but don't expect any personal contact with anybody at Castle House. You will communicate with them through a poor quality intercom, and will hear a heavily-accented voice telling you where to find the keys.

Being woken at 5am by noise is irritating. It can make everything else irritating as well, even the navtives speaking English with an accent.

Good news: Heiða is back from holiday. All guests now get welcome phonecalls 10 minutes after checking in to make sure they are happy with the apartment and to answer any questions. We will make certain this vital service is not neglected next year during Heiða´s annual holiday.

We have a 24 hour reception. When not welcoming guests (only 8 apartments) we sometimes go elsewhere in the buildings for our chores, but we make sure guests can quickly check in when they arrive. In fact we have the fastest check in service anywhere: You are in your apartment within 1 minute from arriving. If we do not meet the guests on arrival this is secured by an intercom. Almost always crystal clear sound both ways. There was a problem with the speaker when this guest arrived, but now fixed. We ARE improving, also using these reviews to learn.

Guest satisfaction: We have a 98% approval rating on TripAdvisor. This means 98% of our guests say they will encourage their friends and family to stay here. The second hotel on this list has 93%.

Best apartment to choose: Probably 20 or 30 on the top floor. They have balconies. We do not move guests from these (they are more expensive) to apartments without balconies. There is wooden flooring. 10 and 40 are directly below. We have now added large and good looking rugs to apartments 20 and 30 so less noise carries below. 10 and 40 have concrete floors, so the apartments below (50 and 60) are not affected by noisy neighbours. The studios (62 and 64) are in a seperate building so also not affected. That said, we get few compaints from guests in 10 and 40 and now with the new rugs hopefully none at all.

Airport bus: The Airportexpress (dot is) bus delivers our guests to our door and picks them up outside for the trip back to the airport. The FlyBus do not stop at the small hotels but will take you to the BSI Terminal or you can take it to Hotel Borg, 5 minutes away.

Luxury: We do not claim to be a 5 star hotel. We have 3 stars. But we offer very well equipped apartments with everything we have ever thought of that could be useful to you including nice furniture, very good beds, fully equipped kitchens or kitchenettes. Bathrooms are being renovated one by one. New tiles, heated floors, enclosed showers. This is a big job, but will be finished early next year.

Service: We offer daily cleaning of the apartments ( and including washing your dishes) exept on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a daily fresh towel service. Before you arrive we can shop for breakfast items for your first day. We offer sending a private car to pick you up at the airport. Direct dial phones in all apartments and all local calls free. Complimentary high speed wifi internet. And if the apartment is free on the day befor you arrive, you can check in very early – for free. We are on call 24/7 if you need anything else.

Terms and booking process: To be able to offer great prices (just compare us to other hotels in the city center) last year we decided to only offer pre paid and non refundable rates. This is clear during the booking process and you cannot book without agreeing to these terms. We advise you to buy travel insurance in case you cannot travel. Always good advise, whereever you choose to stay.
It is also made clear that the 7% VAT is not included in the published rate (on our site – the booking engines have their own rules and include the VAT). This is common practice and does not change the fact that we offer great rates.

My dad and I stayed at Castle House for a few days on a visit to Reykjavik, and we were very happy. The place isn't "luxurious" as the name might suggest, but it's perfectly adequate for travelers, and is unbeatable for the price. On a previous trip, I'd stayed at Reykjavik Backpackers, which was fine (and affordable), but way too noisy and crazy for a trip with my dad. So we were glad to find Castle House, which is tucked away in a little courtyard behind the art museum, near everything but still quiet and private.

The location is excellent--right in the middle of downtown Reykjavik, with easy walkability to the waterfront, BSI bus terminal, Laugavegur Street, etc. The apartment we stayed in was clean, well-furnished, and had free wi-fi, tv, and a nice little kitchenette. And the management was pleasant, responsive, and helpful. I hope to be back in Reykjavik again soon, and will definitely stay at Castle House again.

My husband and I had a small apartment for two nights, with our friends conveniently in the one next door. Ours was a small one, but neat, clean, comfortable, and well equipped, and the location is great. It is in a nice neighborhood right next to the art museum, near the lake, and a pleasant walk to the main shopping/restaurant area. We also walked to the docks for the whale watching tour. We had a rental car and parking nearby was not difficult. I do have to say the bathroom is rather tiny.

Booked Castle House Luxury apartments on the back of Tripadvisor reviews for our honeymoon and was certainly not disappointed.
Wonderfully located a 5 minute stroll from the centre of Reykjavik in a quiet residential area, our apartment (40) was situated on the middle floor. Although smaller than the pictures may suggest it was more than ample for the 2 of us and was well kitted out with everything from iron to hair dryer.
The furniture and decor are starting to look a little tired, with some staining to sofa cushions and paint starting to peel in the bathroom due to steam or the red-hot naturally heated, sulphur smelling hot water!!
We particularly liked the fact that there was a full maid service, who even washed up if required. The apartment was generally clean although the sink and bathroom could have been better (hair in shower plug and soap residue in sink)
My only significant criticism would be that the apartment has been furnished with wooden flooring; nice quality granted, but not conducive to a good night's sleep if the quests in the apartment above you enjoy a late night out and walk around in shoes and move furniture in the early hours of the morning. I can appreciate that carpet isn't the most hygienic of floor coverings but there are many alternatives that would absorb noise and not sound like auditions for Riverdance above your room!!!
We were there for mid-summer so, despite a roller blind and curtains, the room remained quite light at night, due to the sun never fully setting. An eye mask would be a useful asset if you're not the best sleeper in light conditions.
Despite my slight criticisms, Castle represent excellent value for money and the location was completely perfect; We loved Reykjavik and would have no hesitation in booking these apartments again, although I'd stipulate the upper floor for the sake of a decent sleep.
Worth a mention too is 'ie' (Iceland Excursions) who we booked our airport transfers with; unlike Flybus, they will drop you at the door and were brilliantly flexible with times. Our flight was 90 mins late arriving and the driver was still there for us when we arrived. They seem to use semi-retired drivers who were all lovely and full of information and anecdotes!

Room Tip: Top floor to avoid wooden floor noise

Thank you for your great review.

We always listen to our guests and have now added large and rather good looking rugs to the top floor, largely eliminating the sound of footsteps travelling between floors.

Maintenance is done on a daily basis and bathrooms regularly re painted. We are also renewing all bathrooms completely, and will finish that rather large job early next year.

To stay on top you need to be on your toes!
