“One of the Best for persons with limited mobility”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

One of the best hotels for people with limited mobility. Lots of space in the room for a wheelchair and a large bathroom The only problem was the slow service in the bar. There were only two members of staff how were expected to serve drinks and get food from the restaurant for the guests. The selection of meals was not brilliant. It was also very cold.

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights at the beginning of November. We had 2 rooms on the 8th floor. Hotel rooms were very clean and spacious. We found all Incelanders to be very friendly and helpful and this was the case with the hotel staff too. The weather was awful on our first day there and all excursions were cancelled (it was apparetnly worst Arctic storm for many years with winds over 100mph). Taxis are plentiful and arrive within a couple of minutes. Most excursions pick up directly from the hotel so that is easy. We did the Golden Circle tour with Reykjavik Excursions and can recommend that.

I travelled with a tour group so the hotel was chosen for me but I was still impressed. We all got our room keys very promptly and the rooms were spacious and airy with all you would expect to find. The bathroom was particularly impressive, very nice decor and had a bath and separate large shower with 2 shower head. Breakfast was a buffet and had a large selection of both hot and cold food. The Bar had a happy hour between 5 - 7 pm with half price drinks ............. lovely as Iceland is expensive enough. The only thing that annoyed us was the staff at the bar were very slow and didn't seem to know what they were doing even at quite times. The hotek is just outside the main area but within walking distance, 15 minutes approx to the city centre with a large shopping centre even closer. Overall a good holiday.

First of all, the hotel does the job. The rooms are quite spacious and clean. Breakfast is simple but offers a quite big selection of cereals, bread, juice and they have waffles!
Our room was facing the lobby which was ok as the area around the hotel is not that nice anyway but it was impossible to get some fresh air. So the window was pretty much useless. Especially at night time it was too noisy because the bar is just down in the Atrium. The bathroom was simple but nice. I had been looking forward to using the bathtub. Unfortunately the water smelled so bad that even washing hands was a pain. Well, it doesn't come as a surprise that the water in Island tends to have a smell of sulphur but I honestly have not experienced that a strong smell in any of the cafes, restaurants or even parking lavatory. After showering the smell sticks to the whole room for a few hours which was really not that nice.
What I noticed was that a lot of the staff are very young and inexperienced, so service was often not up to the standard of a four star hotel. On our questions we would get no answer or plain wrong information. My advice to you: don't just take it for given that the stuff at the reception knows what they are doing. Overall we spend a long time just waiting at the reception waiting for someone who was able to help us and had the time to do so.
Room service also seemed a little unmotivated. Although the rooms were cleaned every day I had the feeling it was done in a rush and the bed often was still a little messy. Here it's the details that make you feel appreciated as a guest and that makes you want to come back.
On my next trip to Reykjavik I would not choose the Grand Hotel again. It was too noisy, too far from town and stuff too unprofessional, too careless.

Arranged a seminar and stayed a couple of night in some sort of business room.
The seminar arrangement went good: no problems booking even when we had to change to larger a meeting-room, tech part went smoothly with everything working and helpful staff, great service douring the seminar with sandwhiches and fresh coffee and finally a very tasty lunch. Absolutely nothing to complain about there.
Clean and nice rooms with nice views and wifi included (apperantly business rooms only, otherwise about 10e/24h), good breakfest with plenty to chose from and very helpful and nice staff. Location wasnt the best, 20min walk to downtown, but the taxis came within a couple of minutes once they ordered the in the reception.
All and all a very pleasent experience eventhough our taxidriver said its not the best hotel in town.

I stayed at this hotel for 5 days during my trip to Iceland in August 2012 and I was very pleased with everything. The rooms were very nice and clean, I stayed 2 nights on the 2nd floor and 3 nights on the 1st floor (in between I traveled to other parts of Iceland) and I liked the room on the 1st floor better. I did have free wifi access in my room and the breakfast buffet was more than plentiful. As for distance from the city center, it was fairly ok. I never had to call a cab. It takes about 5 minutes to get to the main shopping street. From there on, about 10-15 minutes just following the street to the part of it with shops and cafes, the harbour etc. I paid the trip as a package so I can't really say if it's good value for money or not. Iceland was not as expensive as I had anticipated.

Overall the hotel did what it needed to do, more or less, gave you somewhere to rest and eat. But the room was something out of the 70s. There were dials by the bed which you could easily imagine were radio dials. There was no place to put a regular sized suitcase on. There was no iron or board in the room, although it was promptly brought up when asked for. There was a nice sized balcony looking out over a car park. Also, take my word for it, the smell of rotten eggs doesn't stick! I personally showered at night, doused on some perfume and went to bed, but I assume that even if you showered in the morning it wouldn't stick much, and looking on the bright side, if everyone smells the same no-one can tell the difference. Thankfully the rotten eggs didn't extend into breakfast, but if it did it would have been fitting for the maddness that was the breakfast buffet. Things were a mess, there was absolutely no order, it seemed like chaos. Hot water for tea and coffee was in incredible short supply, for reasons I can't understand. I've been to many hotels in my time so can't understand why it was so difficult to get a simple buffet so messy. Overall, comfortable enough, but not particularly grand.
