We went for a 7 day private tour of Iceland in late December thinking that time of year would give us the best chance to see the Northern Lights and the incredible Ice Caves we'd seen in various photos. We scoured Trip Advisor for the best tour guides and landed on Discover Iceland. Obviously, you're always at the mercy of the weather that time of year, particularly in Iceland. Unfortunately, we ran into a freak storm that hit about halfway through our tour with a lot of rain and wind. In spite of this, our tour guide/driver Orri constantly came up with creative alternatives to some of the activities we'd planned that were cancelled due to safety concerns - Ice Caves, snowmobiling, glacier hikes, etc. While we didn't get to do some of these things, he consistently came up with unique and fantastic locations to visit instead. All of them - from the long-lost crashed plane in the snow-dusted black lava field, to the walk among a herd of Icelandic horses, to Glacial Lagoons of stunning and otherworldly beauty - were incredible and surprising. What could have been a disaster turned into an wonder-filled adventure unlike any we'd had before. In addition, driving in snow, sleet, rain, and hail, and on crazy non-roads and through rivers, could have been frightening, but not once did I feel unsafe with our truly super jeep and it's super driver. Thanks to Orri for giving us all that.
