We spent 8 days in Iceland with our driver / guide Orri Amin, an experienced and delightful person who's been with Discover Iceland for many years. Orri and his modified 4-wheel drive Nissan, nicknamed "Joy", took us around Iceland in 8 days. Orri made sure we got our money's worth -- from horseback riding, to whale watching, to snowmobiling on a beautiful glacier, to visiting a farm, to eating delicious lobster and other fish -- and to being driven to so many waterfalls we lost count! Reykjavik is a charming smallish town on the southwest coast of the island. The second largest city in the country, Akureyri, on the north coast, is the second largest city in Iceland but has a population of only 17,000 or so people. But then, Iceland's total population is only 330,000 people. Orri went out of his day every day to ensure that we spent as much time as possible doing as many things as possible, that we wanted to do. Orri was always flexible, polite, and we could tell he wanted to make sure we were all having a wonderful time (which we did). One thing I couldn't get used to: as we were visiting in June, the sun barely sets in the western sky before it rises again. It never got totally dark, as we were there only days before the summer solstice. After a quick immersion in the Blue Lagoon, we said goodbye to Iceland, hoping to return soon.
