Owner description: Volcano House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the heart of Reykjavik. This is the place where one can learn about the Icelandic volcanoes by watching high quality film that were created for the Volcano House. Moreover, there is a great lava stones collection, souvenir shop and the collection of arts from famous Icelandic artists. We pride ourselves with of our multilingual staff many of whom have studied geology and so can add to the understanding of our customers.

The two documentaries are informative and certainly give perspective on the country and its volcanic history. However, you can find most of this information on the internet, including videos of the 1973 Westman Island eruptions. Seeing it on a larger screen than the computer is worth the money though if you are interested and have the time

My partner and I enjoyed the two films shown. Whilst a little pricey (normal for Iceland though), the films were interesting and educational. We only wish we had time to do a scenic flight over Iceland as the films really show how fantastic the landscape is here.

I would recommend seeing the films.

Having read about this attraction on the internet and various pieces of literature collected from the airport, it was felt a visit here was essential to learn more about Iceland’s shaky existence.
Every visitor to Iceland must know of the volcanic nature of the island. If not, then the sulphur aroma of local tap water gives a clue.
Two documentaries are screened in the hour, the first on the 1973 eruption affecting Westmann Island. The second dealt with Eyjafjallajokull’s eruption which, commencing mid-April 2010 there was global impact due to the volcanic glass having a detrimental sandpaper effect on aircraft, and the ash falling not just on local areas.
The films show clearly why volcanic activity occurs so frequently in Iceland. It is a hotspot which straddles the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Iceland has more than 30 active volcanoes. The locals see both beauty and destructive forces in eruptions. In the Westmann Island’s case. one can only admire the efforts of rescue workers dealing with such a destructive force on their doorstep.
In addition to the films, there is an excellent rock collection — one which can be touched - and touching is encouraged. It’s a definite bonus to actually feel lava rocks and see metamorphoses which has occurred due to extreme force and heat. There are excellent samples or obsidian, jasper and many more to view and touch.
If one has only slight curiosity on the volcanic nature of Iceland, this is money well spent. Price is1950 krona and less, dependant on age.
I'm certainly pleased I went.

Since we were limited on time in Iceland we did not tour the island extensively, but we will plan to do so if we are ever here again on our way to the continent. This attraction documents the 1973 and 2010 volcanic eruptions which wreaked havoc on locals and, in 2010, all air travel in Europe. Iceland's geologic history is fascinating and "alive" with opportunities for more volcanic displays. This is a great demonstration of the axiom "mother earth holds all the cards". We are merely observers of her power. If you visit Reykjavik, plan to spend an hour here. You will not regret it.

Excellent movie in English, very well done and the opportunity to talk with someone who had actually been in the Westman Islands during the eruption was very special. You will gain a lot of admiration for the Icelandic people and their determination from this film.
