We stopped in Volcano house on our first night in Reykjavik. We wanted to get some dinner and look at the museum/see the film they offer. Well, we found out they stop serving food at 5pm. Their website says that they are open until 10pm, but no where does it stay about them stopping serving food. They also don't offer all the food on the website at the actual cafe. It was a much smaller menu than online. That annoyed me a little bit. 5pm is a little early to shut down the kitchen.
The people behind the counter were very nice and pointed us to the direction of a restaurant close by where we could eat dinner. After dinner we came back for some coffee and carrot cake. The coffee was good as well as the carrot cake. There is a piano in the corner and we were treated to someone playing for fun while we were there. We bought tickets to the film and took a look around their little museum. The film was great, I learned a lot about volcanoes in Iceland. It was very interesting.
I really did like the atmosphere of the cafe. it was a really nice place to hang out. We even returned a few days later because my boyfriend wanted to try the Hákarl (fermented shark) and Brennivín (Icelandic Schnapps). So she brings him the plate and warns him it isn't for those wait a faint stomach. He loves trying anything so he digs in. Watching his face was hysterical! The smell alone made my stomach churn, I don;t know how he ate 2 pieces. He chased it with the Brennivín and that didn't really help. He ended up having to get a beer to wash it all down. It was certainly a fun experience.
I do really like Volcano house and I recommended stopping in there while you're in Reykjavik, even if it's just to get coffee.
