Owner description: Volcano House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the heart of Reykjavik. This is the place where one can learn about the Icelandic volcanoes by watching high quality film that were created for the Volcano House. Moreover, there is a great lava stones collection, souvenir shop and the collection of arts from famous Icelandic artists. We pride ourselves with of our multilingual staff many of whom have studied geology and so can add to the understanding of our customers.

“Wonderful Cafe and Museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

We stopped in Volcano house on our first night in Reykjavik. We wanted to get some dinner and look at the museum/see the film they offer. Well, we found out they stop serving food at 5pm. Their website says that they are open until 10pm, but no where does it stay about them stopping serving food. They also don't offer all the food on the website at the actual cafe. It was a much smaller menu than online. That annoyed me a little bit. 5pm is a little early to shut down the kitchen.

The people behind the counter were very nice and pointed us to the direction of a restaurant close by where we could eat dinner. After dinner we came back for some coffee and carrot cake. The coffee was good as well as the carrot cake. There is a piano in the corner and we were treated to someone playing for fun while we were there. We bought tickets to the film and took a look around their little museum. The film was great, I learned a lot about volcanoes in Iceland. It was very interesting.

I really did like the atmosphere of the cafe. it was a really nice place to hang out. We even returned a few days later because my boyfriend wanted to try the Hákarl (fermented shark) and Brennivín (Icelandic Schnapps). So she brings him the plate and warns him it isn't for those wait a faint stomach. He loves trying anything so he digs in. Watching his face was hysterical! The smell alone made my stomach churn, I don;t know how he ate 2 pieces. He chased it with the Brennivín and that didn't really help. He ended up having to get a beer to wash it all down. It was certainly a fun experience.

I do really like Volcano house and I recommended stopping in there while you're in Reykjavik, even if it's just to get coffee.

Dear Sara P, thank you for your visit and review. And we apologize for your inconvenience in regards to our menu and cafe. Our problem is that we are at the beginning of a transformation. Another restaurant is moving into our premises and we will cooperate with them. Our website should be clearer on this of course, but we have been a bit hesitating as we developing the details these days. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit in spite of this. Best regards, the Volcano Team.

“One of our favorites!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2014

During a recent family trip to Iceland - this was one of our favorite restaurant / cafe stops. The kids enjoyed the rock and ash displays and we enjoyed the food and drinks. Actually quite reasonably priced - and the beer on tap is a must try!

“Really interesting film”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2014

We stopped into the Volcano House because we got the timings of another cinema showing films about Iceland wrong.

We watched two films about a 1970s and the more recent eruption. The videos were well produced and very informative. The venue also includes some pictures and rock types from recent eruptions which were interesting to wander around after watching the film.

There is also a cafe at the venue with volcano-themed food.

We dropped in here by luck - i'm really pleased we did and its definitely worth a visit.

“Intresting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2014

It was very informative. Amazing footage of the Volcanos and shows a lot of the history. It was a bit expensive, about $20.00 cdn per person, but I would still recommend it.

Dear dkuester, thank you for your nice review and you visit. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit. Regarding the price, we are unable to keep it lower as the Volcano House is open 13 hours a day, 7 days a week and we pay regular fees to the film makers. I have explained before that the films are made solely for the Volcano House and cannot be seen anywhere else and quality productions for small markets tend to be more expensive than mass production for bigger markets. Best regards, The Volcano Team.

They have a movie about the Volcano's but to me it seemed very expensive so we just had a browse around the shop, had coffee and some really nice cake.
