Owner description: Volcano House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the heart of Reykjavik. This is the place where one can learn about the Icelandic volcanoes by watching high quality film that were created for the Volcano House. Moreover, there is a great lava stones collection, souvenir shop and the collection of arts from famous Icelandic artists. We pride ourselves with of our multilingual staff many of whom have studied geology and so can add to the understanding of our customers.

There is something here for all ages. We found it very interesting, with loads of hands on exhibits. They have a lovely cafe & the apple cake is to die for!

Dear guest,
We thank you for those kind words. Volcano House is entertaining for people of all ages, you can browse around our rock collection (touch ash, pick up boulders of lava and volcanic bombs), sit down with a hot drink and catch up on some reading about Icelandic nature, treat yourself in our gift store, book a volcano tour to Eyjafjallajökull or enjoy our cinema.
Great to hear you enjoyed our apple pie!
All our best, Volcano House staff.

“Good find”
Reviewed February 16, 2013 via mobile

I wasn't quite sure what to expect here but it was really informative. Two films showing the aftermath of the volcano in 1973 and then the ash of 2010. Seismic grafts showing the recent earthquakes.

“Interesting exhibition - worth a visit.”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

Great mixture of a relaxed reading cafe with interesting books and a small cinema showing two films on the 1970s eruption on the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland and the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption. Nice to have somewhere to go in Reykjavik where you can get an idea of the volcanic element to Iceland - this exhibition gives you a taste of this very well. There is a small display of various volcanic deposits and photographs. Informative and absorbing.

Dear guest, we thank you so much for this great review. Informative and absorbing is exactly the words that we aim to get. The idea behind Volcano House is also to be able to give the tourist who is only staying in the capital area and not leaving the city, a closer view of how our island behaves and its volcanism.
We thank you again and hope to see you in the future.
All the best, the staff of Volcano House

“Hidden gem.”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

Is it a cafe? Is it a museum? Is it a library? Is it a shop? Is it a cinema? Hands on exhibits with a warm relaxed atmosphere and a great corner location. This corner locale in the portside area seems to be many things at once. Knowledgeable owner catering to those thirsty for knowledge and refreshments. Cinema entry is by ticket only, otherwise, browse at your leisure.

Dear guest, first of all -what a great topic name! Thank you so much for those kind words, we really do appreciate them. We like to think of Volcano House as a place to come to to relax, read up about Icelandic geology while enjoying a hot beverage, shop some souvenirs, browse through our rock museum and enjoy our 53 minute cinema show about Icelandic volcanic eruptions -an all in one 2 hour enjoyment in the middle of Reykjavik centrum.
We thank you again and hope you return one day.
All our best, the Volcano House staff.

“Worth a Visit....”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

Saw this place on a cold january morning. Cafe took my eye, but once inside found it was more than that.

Ordered a coffee and booked to see the 11-00 hrs show. While waiting for the show and drinking my coffee the Gentleman who served me gave me a book to look at about the eruption on the Westerman Island back in the 70's.

The first film was about that...followed by the more recent in 2010. Really enjoyed this visit and it showed how hard the Icelanders worked to get back to normality after these events.Well Done!!
