“Good hotel, well located”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

I have to echo the review by K_RocheLondon, we were actually there over Easter 2012 also and experienced rain like I had never seen (will never complain about Irish rain again!) However, we still got out and about to visit the Golden Circle etc and we did get some lovely sunny weather for the Blue Lagoon visit on our way home. But about the Hotel Holt - we got a good deal on an external website which included breakfast, our room really was quite small but it suited us perfectly. It was clean and the bed was comfortable - a proper double not 2 twins stuck together. It had two single quilts which kept falling off in the night though! The breakfast was quite adequate, the usual cold overcooked scrambled eggs, but good meats, cheeses, breads some fruit, cereal and juice. Breakfast staff were so helpful and friendly and polite. It is quite a small place so there was only ever one person serving at breakfast so it felt very personal. Front desk staff were also very helpful and rang around to check opening hours of places over Easter (a lot of places shut) and bus times (none on Good Friday except for pre-booked tours). The hotel is located very close to the centre, about 10 or 15 minutes from some good restaurants in the Old Harbour area so if you don't mind a little walk and enjoy a quieter environment at night this will suit you perfectly. It also has free parking if required and is handy to the main route out to the Golden Circle area. It was once obviously a very luxurious hotel and it's glamour is a little faded now, but this adds somewhat to it's charm - it definitely has character.

Room Tip: We were in 309 and it looked out at the back so it was very quiet but it was quiet small, it was how...

Dear Fi24.

Thank you for your insightful review. I especially like the comment about the hotel having once been a luxurious one but that having faded a bit adding to the charm. That is definitely something we are aware of and the goal is not to go to luxury again since that would mean much higher room rates but it is to maintain all areas well and preserve our charm as well as adding value to everything in the guest experience.

One of those things would be by improving on the breakfast. We are working very closely with the restaurant to improve there and each morning for the last few weeks, I have been visiting other Reykjavík hotels to compare the quality and price. We will definitely have the best value breakfast in the area before this process is done.

We look forward to welcoming you again as soon as possible to show you how we´ve improved.

Warm regards,
Snorri

Stayed at Hotel Holt for a 4 day break over Easter 2012 mainly because of the previous reviews plus we got a good rate for a suite (for4) with breakfast included. You also get free pass to the fitness complex and impressive swimming and thermal pools at Laugar, but would need transport to get there. The hotel location is good, in a quiet part of town, but only a short walk to the main drag. The hotel staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful during our stay. The on-line 'live' chat facility is especially recommended if you have any queries before you arrive - we were able to get recommendations for restaurants (all superb) from the manager who also very kindly made the reservations as well. Reception very willing to ring venues to double check Easter opening times for the children when we arrived. The suite was comfortable, 2 separate rooms with flat screen TVs and extra blankets supplied on request. Breakfast was a typical affair, but with a good selection of breads and more than ample for our needs. The numerous and varied artworks caught our attention and gave my electronic fixated kids much to talk about which was a bonus! Despite appalling weather and reduced Easter opening hours for some shops and attractions we had an absolutely fantastic time. The National Museum is highly recommended, we enjoyed the Viking floor and there is a great room for kids - dress like a Viking, bishop, Icelandic national dress and take souvenir photo against the mural wall. We also did the 'golden circle' the Geysers, Gulfoss and Pingvellar National Park - absolutely superb. At children's request we went to the ghost museum and Icelandic wonders museum ( housed in same complex) about an hours drive from Reykjavik in Stokkseyri - beware, the children lasted less than 5 mins in the ghost museum - a lot of screaming - and the very kind lady gave us our money back - oh how we laughed - joined by the children only when safely back in the car!!. This happens a lot apparently, about 50% of punters bail out in first 5mins. We also joined in the icelandic custom of hanging out in thermal pools and recommend it - laugarvatn was a small geothermal complex on way back from Gulfoss on the edge of a geothermal lake - after a hard day sightseeing in the rain, was a wonderfull way to relax for an hour and then arrive back at the hotel washed and ready to go out . The allmost obligatory visit to the blue lagoon lives up to the hype - we spent about 2.5hrs on Easter Sunday aft in glorious sunshine lolling about in blue thermal pools against the staggeringly impressive volcanic rock backdrop. Food was better than we had been led to believe, we ate at a Nepalese restaurant, Italia and Prikid burger bar recommended by Hotel - enjoyed them all. We also ate at the Hotel Restaurant and they were happy to provide off menu meals for the children, we had the chef's set menu & 'His' set menu - the quality of the meal was excellent, but let down marginally by the delay to the main course and arriving tepid - this was very swiftly rectified. We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to Iceland and hotel holt and intend to return.

We stayed here last weekend and had a lovely stay - the hotel was nice and clean, and the bed very comfortable. Staff were always helpful and pleasant. It is also in a fantastic location so close to everything.

Would definitely recommend staying here.

I can't say enough about Hotel Holt! It is located in a terrific location - close to great restaurants and shops but far away from the touristy part of Reykjavik. The Hotel is is very well kept and the rooms are very clean. The staff is superb- Sandra and the whole front desk crew were incredible! so helpful and eager to help book tours or recommend terrific restaurants. I have been to Iceland twice before and this was by far the best trip! Thank you Hotel Holt!

Room Tip: I was placed on the top floor which was great. The room was very sunny and very quiet.

Dear Travel and Leisure 2012.

Thank you for your glowing review. I am very happy you had such a great experience. It is always good to see people enjoy the hotel after being to Reykjavík before. Then you have something to compare and by the looks of it, we´ll be seeing you for your fourth trip to Reykjavík.

We look forward to welcoming you back!

The best thing about Hotel Holt is its location. It is just 3 mins walk from the main street in Reyjkavik and is also so easy to find by car from the ring road, not like other hotels we have used in Reyjkavik. I only booked a standard room but I think better rooms would be available and I even think some may have balconies. Ours was comfortable but on the small side so if I go again I will spend more and get more room!!

We did not eat at the hotel in the evening but we did have breakfast which I would say is average. The buffet is limited and if you get down a bit late it seems everyone has picked over it and you have the leftovers! Also the ony hotel I have stayed in which serves up a big pile of bourbon creams for breakfast!

I agree with some of the other reviews that the hotel is on the dark side but I think this is to preserve the many paintings and antiques which are throughout. As long as you have good eye sight this does not cause a problem!!

Seriously we had a good night's sleep every night we were there as it is in such a quiet location. I would use Hotel Holt again purely for the convenience of the location but would try and get a better room.

Room Tip: Expedia only offered a standard room some would try and book direct

Dear Snowqueen.

Thank you for your review and the helpful feedback on what we can do better.

We do indeed have several Jr.Suites and Suites and 7 of our 41 rooms have balconies with stunning views of the city. This can all be arranged, on availability, by simply contacting us directly. We are working on a new website and being more approachable prior to booking by implementing a live chat on our homepage and on facebook as well as being more active in social media such as Twitter. I hope that will give our potential guests a chance to connect with us and get answers to any questions they have about the hotel, Reykjavik and Iceland in general.

I will check what happened during you stay with the breakfast but there is a good reason behind the bourbon creams. We have a regular guest who stays with us about 30 times per year and demands to have them. Before we had computers systems to manage our guest preferences, we had to basically prepare ourselves to have the creams ready when he came by. In the end we decided to offer them everyday and some guests love it, others find it strange. I hope the next time you join us you will have enough other things to enjoy since it seems it is not your cup of tea.

Warm regards,
Snorri

Arrived very early morning and room wasn't ready yet, so the staff told us that we can have some breakfast (Would've been very nice if they told us that early check-in and breakfast will cost us extra $50, but... hey, it's Europe!!)
Hotel "Holt" is very beautiful and has a great location. It is situated on a very quite street and within walking distance to shopping, restaurants and Church of Hallgrímur. Rooms are small but very clean. Staff is friendly, but not very knowledgeable in regards to touring trips. You have to know exactly where you want to go and how much you would like to spend..
Overall very satisfied with our stay and would choose hotel "Holt" again.

Dear Natalie B.

Thank you for the review and giving us such a positive review despite the couple of hiccups you experienced.

Of course all our guests are more than welcome to enjoy our breakfast buffet but up until now we have charged guests when they have more breakfasts than are included in their room rate. I can see that it depends on how the guest service agent communicates the offer of breakfast whether you expect to pay for it or not. So guess what. Free breakfast for all our early check-ins waiting for rooms, from now on. Thanks to you. Hopefully you will be able to enjoy that next time.

In regards to the staff not being knowledgable about tours. I am very concerned about this. I would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to contact me directly through whatever way you are comfortable (e-mail, phone, live chat on our homepage etc.) to give me the details of this. It is a huge priority for me that all guests, whether in house or on the way, can trust our staff to provide extremely knowledgeable information on all tours and things to do around Reykjavík. This is always a work in progress but we should be striving for perfection so it is alarming to see that a guest felt we weren´t on top of our game.

Other than that, please contact me, referencing this review, the next time you are planning a trip to Reykjavík. We would love a chance to vow you again.

Warm regards,
Snorri
