The Hotel Borg is reputedly the best hotel in Reykjavik, but we were a little disappointed. Admittedly they were full and we got the last room - which was at the back of the hotel overlooking a scruffy passageway, but it felt like a hotel that has seen better days. Our room looked as if it could do with a lick of paint and the restaurant was shut, which meant that breakfast was eaten in a windowless ballroom, furnished with ugly tables and chairs. Breakfast itself was OK, although there was a tendency for them to run out of things on the buffet. The staff were perfectly friendly and happy to make restaurant reservations for us, although the service felt a bit impersonal. Overall it was perfectly adequate but completely lacking in atmosphere - unilike the hotel next door which seemed to be buzzing!

Dear Optimusprime100,

We are delighted you chose to stay with us during your time in Reykjavik and taking the time to review our property. We would love to hear more about your stay, in particular the room you stayed in. If anyone is not happy with their room, we always encourage them to contact the front desk, to see if re-allocation is possible. We do apologise about our restaurant being closed for dinner service ( it is still open for bar service). We do hope to have it re-opened soon.

Beautiful art deco hotel in the heart of Reykjavik near major sites like the Harpa Concert Hall. Restaurants, shopping, bank, on and off bus near by. Very accommodating staff. On site spa. Lovely breakfast buffet. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed for dinner - we had heard it was excellent. Spotless rooms, comfy beds. honor system mini bar. Very close pick up for tours. We would definitely stay again.

Room tip: Ask for 5th floor - roomier rooms; ask for a room facing the square

This is a good hotel. It's in a great walkable location. It's expensive but the premium was justified. There is a fun bar lounge attached to the hotel on the first floor. The breakfast is solid. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. Caruso Italian restaurant around the corner was fantastic.

The star of this hotel is definitely the building. It's a pure art deco gem with lots of details and upscale furnishings. On top of that, the location is more or less perfect. You could almost join in the meetings at the Icelandic parliament while sitting on your balcony!

A couple of less perfect points...

When we stayed, neither the restaurant nor the bar in the hotel were open. This was not mentioned on the web site so it was a surprise and not in a good way. Now frankly there is no danger of going hungry, there are tens of restaurants within walking distance but nevertheless for a 4 star hotel no bar or restaurant is a poor show.

Second point. For our stay, we booked a suite. Again very nice art deco details and very well furnished but it was not really a true 'suite'. We had one big room with a seating area at one end and the bed at the other. So really a 'junior suite'. As far as I could figure out most of the 'suites' are this way although the picture on he web shows a suite of two separate rooms.

To highlight a positive point of our room, we had a balcony over-looking one of the main squares in Reykjavik. Excellent for people and weather watching and we even got to see the northern lights one of the nights while we were there. Also despite the central position, the room was very well triple-glazed so no noise from the street (which can get pretty lively in that part of town).

Overall I'd say we were reasonably happy with the hotel. Would I stay again? Not sure. There are other options just as central and just as up-scale. Maybe we'd try a different hotel.

Room tip: If you are looking for a suite try room 412. It's one of the biggest. Or go for the Tower Suite.

Dear Ecpg,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and taking the time to review your recent stay.
We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed the location and the historic building.

We do apologise about the restaurant being closed for dinner service. However, it is open for drinks beginning at 18:00 every day. We do hope to have it resume soon. In the mean time, we also have another more casual pub connected to the hotel, Nóra, that is available for lunch and dinner ( as well as the room service).
Regarding the suites, all have the same amenities and approximate square meters. However, due to the historic character of our building, some could have an open floor plan, or a separate living area. Others, such as yours offer a balcony. Additionally, all suites afford a view of the magnificent Austurvollur Square.

Again thank you for your thoughts and we hope you had a nice visit to Iceland.

We stayed on our last night in Reykjavik in a suite and adjoining twin room. Rooms large and modern Art Deco. Very comfortable and well appointed

Staff friendly and helpful. Came out to help unload car and take bags to room. Have some good tips

One issue was that there is no parking in front of hotel as in summer they close the square to make pedestrianised. Parking spaces are hard to find so be prepared to circle round or go a bit further away.

Restaurant is not open so only had breakfast which was fine - usual Scandinavian fare
