We came across this restaurant by chance,my husband and i are both oap's but we like good food and for the price etc we thought it was very good value we went there two nights and yes the locals and police were in there each time but i think that say's enough if the locals use it.

“Go local in Reykjavik”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

This is a must if you want real Icelandic food served canteen style you have to visit this place - the food is good basic Icelandic cooked as if you were at home this is the place the Police , Fire and local workers go for their dinner - nothing fancy although you can have a beer if y want - the main course includes soup ,salad and coffee and for less that Euro 12 per person this is a bargain in this land - I had soup and a fish with a shrimp and almond dressing along with new potatoes - as good as any posh restaurant and if you are staying at the Hilton or Park Inn - it's almost next door ! - I for one am honing back !

try to get something like salted mutton and a bean soup or bacalao or some other Icelandic dishes. Remember "In Rome you do as the romans do"

“Good cafeteria style auhentic food, and cheap”
Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

Buffet style, with authentic local food and inclusive of pudding and coffee.

Quite a utilitarian cafeteria style ambience, but great value for money (1700 ISK per head)

“Homecooked meals at a moderate price.”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

This is not what you would call your typical tourist restaurant. It is actually a restaurant where policemen, taxi drivers, plumbers, carpenters...

In short, a wide variety of people that prefer value over decor and it reminds the visitor a bit of the cafeterias one found so often in Texas, Louisiana and probably other places as well.

Each day brings on about 4 - 5 different dishes ranging from fish to meat. Included with every dish is soup and dessert and the option to eat as much as you like for a fixed price. Once you've had it with fast food and posh expensive restaurants it is a relief to visit these people for a decent meal that could have originated from your mom's kitchen.

Their menu for the week is to be found at http://www.mulakaffi.is/veitingastadur/matsedill-vikunnar/

It is in Icelandic but with the help of google translate you might be able to decipher its meaning.
