We stopped here for dinner one night, looking for something not too pricey. We walked right by it the first day we walked around the area, so I asked the lady at the travel desk at the Hilton where it was. She seemed surprised and asked "You want to eat at Mulakaffi? They have traditional home style Icelandic food. Bachelors and truck drivers eat there!" The mulakaffi was right across the street from the Hilton Nordica, just up the hill. Walked in the door to a large room, with many large tables (reminiscent of a school cafeteria) where large groups or families could sit together, or others could dine communal style. There are also some smaller tables if you prefer. The food is cafeteria style, with different prices for different entrees and then it seemed all the sides you might want are included. Also soup, salad and bread. The food was good, and the lady who served us was friendly. I had a soup that had a rich clear broth, with meat & vegetables as well as barley, it was delicious! Nice to find a place where you can have a good dinner without spending all your souvenir money.
