I stayed here for 2 nights on my way back to North America from Europe. I took the fly bus and it dropped my off right in front if the door, so it was really easy to get to from the airport. I splurged and stayed in a 6 bed dorm which included linen, duvet, towel as well as breakfast great selection at breakfast!)! It was worth the upgrade as some of the larger dorms do not include linen.

The hostel has a wonderful bar and restaurant which is warm and cozy and has spectacular views of the water and mountains. It is a short walk to the shopping street and museums so in a great location. There are also lots of locals in the restaurant and bar so if you are up for a chat you can meet more than other backpackers here. There is always someone at reception and the upper floors require a key so I felt very safe.

The mattresses are new and comfy with nice pillows as well. Locker and hangers in the room and it was nice and warm. I will definitely stay here again when I come back to Iceland!

I traveled to Iceland by myself for a weekend, and Kex was exactly what I was looking for. The hostel is pretty cheap, but it's safe, clean, and it has character. I stayed in a 6-bed girls-only room, but since it's the off season there were only 2 other girls there the first night and no one on the second night. The rooms were clean and there was a locker for my things, but there were only 2 lockers for 6 people and you do have to bring your own lock. The common areas were well decorated and there are lots of people hanging around that you can talk to. It wasn't too crowded and I never had trouble getting food or getting into the shared bathrooms. My only complaint is how expensive breakfast was- 13 USD for toast, yogurt, and coffee! I had it added into my room for the first 2 mornings, but then I checked how much it was and got food on my own for the last day. If you eat a lot it would be worth it, but I like light breakfasts.

Kex was the best hostel in the 5 months we travelled Europe. Great rooms shared spaces and people. Good location and wicked interior designs. And bar, wow, amazing views, places to chill out and food. Thanks thanks

Comfy beds, clean bathrooms, well-stocked communal kitchen, convenient location and helpful staff! Can be a bit loud at night as people are coming and going, but they'll give you free ear plugs at the front desk - problem solved! The restaurant/bar on site has excellent food and beer and was a great place to meet other travelers as well as locals. There is often free live music at KEX too. Also there is a rental car place right across the street. I highly recommend this hostel!

Stayed for a week here- loved this hostel!! Only downsides were waiting in line to speak to front desk and tourist info staff and that breakfast was not included. Great kitchen facilities and bathrooms cleaned four times a day- unheard of! Lockers in rooms and get deposit back for locks. Locked door needing key for each floor, so great security as well. Very close to Sun Voyager and grocery store (for store: just go out the door by reception and take a left). Easy pick up and drop off by bus to and from airport. Plus a lot of local Icelanders hang out at the bar downstairs. Great atmosphere and free wifi...can't beat it. Best hostel I have ever stayed in!!

I was only in Iceland for two nights, but had a great stay at Kex. Although I didn't have a ton of time to hangout here, the staff were friendly, the beds were comfy, and the hostel was in a great location (right by a waterfront walking path). It was also really nicely decorated and clean. I plan to come back to Iceland for a much longer stay, and would definitely stay here again.

I loved the decor in the common areas at Kex and the people who stayed here. The bar is frequented by native Icelanders at night. The decor is very hip, but in a very cozy, authentic way. I stayed here during Airwaves and the Seattle radio station KEXP would broadcast every day from the bar/living area.

The rooms were pretty standard, but clean, hostel rooms. The showers and bathrooms were also very clean for a hostel that was fully booked for the entire week during Airwaves. Every bed is assigned, so if you prefer a top bunk or a lower bunk make sure to send that request with your reservation. I was meeting with some people and Kex tried their best to make sure we were in the same room. I was on the fourth floor which is the top floor and also the quietest. It would definitely have been rocking in the rooms on the third floor!

Room Tip: The top floor (fourth floor is the quietest). All beds are assigned - if you have a preference for t...

It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Of course, you might not even want to venture outside of the hostel with all its features: a cafe and bar, lounge area, heated outdoor patio, tourist information desk, laundry room, and free Wi-Fi. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 214 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. Every piece of decor has a story to tell. Using salvaged materials and found objects from various sources, KEX is an organic concept blending Iceland' s past with a modern, international twist. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the center of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city center. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
