“Very cool place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

The description, pictures and other reviews of this hostel made it sound great so we booked for 2 nights and weren't disappointed. If you do stay then I recommend paying the extra for the excellent breakfast that for Iceland prices was reasonable.
We had a 4 bed dorm that was big and as the place is an old warehouse, it's all very large with plenty of chill out space downstairs. The bar and restaurant is a popular spot with other travelers and Icelandic people just popping in.
It's less than a 5 minute easy walk around the corner to the main road (Laugavegur) with all the bars and restaurants. Enjoy your stay

I have never stayed in a hostel like it! It has very quirky decor and definitely attracts both traveller and Icelandic hipsters (but not in a snobby way!). All decoration was really interesting even in the rooms which you would normally expect to be a bit plainer! Despite this it was all very clean and the bathrooms and kitchens were fully equipped. If you plan on cooking yourself at the hostel I would definitely have a look at the free food shelves though (more like a wall!). A jazz night was happening on one of the nights which created an amazing atmosphere which was easy to meet new people in. The bar is excellent! especially for Icelandic beers- which they serve in litres!! This hostel is very popular though, me and my three friends ended up in four separate rooms (which also happened to be some of the most expensive) after booking two days before (which was no big problem for us) so would not rely on turning up on the day. Breakfast and washing was also pricey... but I guess that is Iceland.

Stayed here for 6 nights during the Iceland Airwaves music festival in 2012. Stayed in a private room with a few friends. The hostel is more like an Icelandic culture museum than a hostel. It's beautifully decorated, clean, safe, the staff are helpful and the food at the restaurant/lounge is amazing. Brunch is definitely worth it! The location is ideal if you're visiting Reykjavik by foot.

This hostel is unbelievable. I've stayed in so many hostels now, it's so refreshing to finally find one that ticks all the boxes plus more! The owners of this place have poured so much love and energy into this place, it's not just a clean bed and room, it's an experience! To sum it up, awesome location, extremely friendly staff that helped book our buses etc, 3 door keycard security (front, level, room), great attached restaurant, amazing continental breakfast with great coffee. The decor is a new level, the restaurant, reception, kitchen, lounge, and everything is super creative, but not too much.. Can't say enough good things about this place, congrats to the owners, you nailed the perfect hostel experience!

The hostel was extremely busy, so there was a bit of a wait to get checked in and hard to get help from someone for directions on the map. The bar area gets packed around 7PM, so it is hard to find a seat to sit down. The bar area is almost too popular for its own good. They had local music acts different nights of the week. DO NOT PURCHASE THE BREAKFAST when you check in though, it is just a overpriced fruit bowl with slices of meat and coffee.
Fantastic atmosphere for meeting other travelers.

Good location, good fun, friendly guests, helpful staff. Choose Backpackers if you prefer quieter and more pristine, but Kex is great for hanging out, meeting fellow travelers, playing games and as an energizing base for exploring the city. Funky decor charmed me silly, too.
Note it is a huge place and seemed to have plenty of rooms when other hostels were full, and beds were cheaper than City Hostel or Backpackers (bring your sleeping bag to save on linens fee!)

Room Tip: Avoid rooms by the 4th floor kitchen if food smells bother you :)

Kex is a backpackers but also a popular bar where locals come regularly and where concerts are hostel every week.

In August 2012 I stayed 4 days in the 16 (!!) people bedroom which is actually more like 2 big rooms separated by a wall in the middle so it does not feel like a huge mess.

Room was very good. The whole hostel is super well decorated with a vintage atmosphere, kind of like a lounge. Breakfast included was allright as far as I remember (was hangover and drunk so not so reliable though).

It is an excellent place to meet other travellers, but also to meet locals craving for some foreign meat (!!).

I do not put 5 stars because showers were a bit messy, staff is overwhelmed by incoming customers (quite crowded in the reception) and it was a bit pricey. I would definitely come back there if I make it to Iceland again some day.

It' s the Icelandic word for "biscuit" and a social hostel in Reykjavik. What's not to love? Housed in an old biscuit factory in the heart of Reykjavik, KEX is just steps from all the bars, clubs, and music venues that give this city its legendary reputation. It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 214 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the center of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city center. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
