“Great place to stay”
Reviewed March 6, 2012

Just back from a few days in Iceland. We based ourselves at the Kex and were not disappointed. All the bus companies from the airport drop and pick up from the hostel which is a massive bonus. The staff at Kex are helpful and friendly whether it be at 10am or 5am. The rooms were tidy and most importantly, well heated! The bathrooms are shared and are a mix of single or group showers for the chaps (with the all important good pressure not a pitiful dribble), not sure about the ladies setup. Its only a few minutes walk to some very nice pubs, restaurants, shops and ATMs. If your feeling lazy there is a Dominos and McDonalds style eatery just across the road. The food and beer options at the hostel were also very good, fresh cooked meals and draught beer is always a winning combo!
I would happily stay here again.
PS - Sleep quality was poor because my mate snored the whole time.

Room Tip: Upper levels have a good view of harbour, lower levels mean you dont have to climb up and down steps

We just returned from a five day stay at Kex Hostel. Throw away your precinceived ideas of what a hostel is like; the private rooms are akin to a B&B stay. While there is no private bathroom, the shower/toilets ARE little private rooms - you don't share. Service is excellent and staff actually show you around so you know how the hostel is arranged. Best if all is the bar/ restaurant. Excellent drinks and food (especially the seafood) for good prices. I had cusk for 1850, which is a great deal for Iceland.

Location is good. Tip floors facing the harbor have an excellent view and just two blocks away is Languevur which is the main shopping/party drag. There is also a 10-11 around the corner for cheap snacks. Friday and Saturday are busy nights at the bar with loads of locals coming in. The crowd is of the late 20s and up variety, which is nice for the post college traveler.

If you are looking for inexpensive lodging in a good location with great vibe, stay at Kex! I highly reckoned it.

Absolutely brilliant place to stay. Beautiful sea views, large kitchen, super friendly staff and bar staff, comfy, cosy, loads of interesting books to borrow and big old sofas to curl up on. Candelit bar, spotlessly clean, individual bed lights, very reasonably priced beer, loads of cooking space, a couple of minutes walk to the town centre and nearest supermarket, a stones throw from the sea. Individual keys. Only thing to note: BRING A SLEEPING BAG (or pay 1000 krona for a pillow and duvet - the duvet IS the warmest comfiest duvet I've ever been given though so well worth it if you're there for a few days!). Also to note is that there are no computers to use - only Wi-Fi.

As a recommendation - the stout you can get on tap at the hostel bar is DELICIOUS ( better than guinness!!) and also I highly recommend their Skyr desert because it comes with tasty thick fruity jam. We were extremely impressed with the 'Icelandic cheeses' taster platter that came with more cheese than two people could manage which were all very different and delcious and also some lovely breads and crackers (all at extremely reasonable prices for Iceland).

All round super hostel!

Room Tip: Take the free earplugs if you are in one of the 16 bedded rooms! Trust us!

Kex is fantastic, unbelievably friendly staff, fantastic food and impeccably clean. I tried to think of a negative and couldn't. Really well placed with an excellent view of the sea, car rental just outside, kitchen for keeping costs down, really comfy beds and most importantly a really good hostel atmosphere. Oh and they seem to keep someone up all night so if you roll in at 4am, they'll let you in :)

It was a nicely decorated hostel with so much character. But a cleaner bathroom would be a lot better. And something really disappointing wad that on the new year eve, after my fd and I finish watching firework, we wanted to soak ourself with warm hot water for a bath. And we stood there for 1 min and still the water was freezingly cold, same as my body. Then we went to the reception and was told that the heater was out of order. It's fine if the heater was not working, just an earlier notice would be Gd enough.

KEX has a character of its own. The building is an old biscuit factory near downtown Reykjavik that was converted to hostel. Although the exterior of the building appears mundane with plain windows and dark paint, the interior design is a gem. Furnished with vintage objects from various places, the hostel gave me a vintage industrial feeling during my stay: I almost felt like I was living in a military bunker during the Cold War era. The main lobby of the hostel provides a great view of the ocean and Mt. Esja. I recommend doing the day hike on Mt. Esja.

The staffs are friendly and very helpful. The staffs will not hesitate to share with you their personal experiences with Iceland and will provide you with their honest recommendations in terms of what to do during your stay. Anything you want to do at Iceland, they provide you with the resources to do so. The hostel provides you with lockers to store personal belongings, and there’s never a time when I had to worry about not having enough lockers. There is also a storage room where you can store your baggage safely. In terms of accommodation, variety of food and drinks are limited on the daily basis, but their quality is very decent. Price range is medium, not too pricey.

The hostel overall is clean. The beds are comfortable and I never had to wait for showers. Some of the public bathrooms constantly play quirky radio broadcasts like “War of the Worlds” by Orson Wells, quite entertaining if you asked me.

The location of the hostel is great. It’s a walking distance from the main street of downtown Reykjavik. My only problem is that the hostel’s bar and restaurant are open to public. So with locals pouring in for food and drinks, it’s difficult to meet other travelers. Nonetheless, near the reception area there is a bulletin board with travelers’ messages about various plans, ideas, rideshares, etc. I would recommend bringing a computer with wireless internet to get connected with these travelers.

Overall, I gave KEX a 5 out of 5. I really had a pleasant stay and I would stay at KEX when I return to Iceland.

Room Tip: The private 2-bedroom offers a great ocean and mountain view.

It's also a painless distance from late night munchies and a mind-boggling array of coffee houses, shops, and tourist attractions. Two guest kitchenettes and private laundry facilities are also available. And with a variety of rooms for up to 214 guests, you'll have no problem meeting interesting, new travel buddies from exotic places. KEX oozes with personality and soul-just like our guests. The raw industrial spaces and vintage furnishings combine to give it a homey, eclectic feel. With the affordable nightly rates, you'll still have enough cash left over to enjoy a few pints of Viking beer or sample some local delicacies like hakarl and Brennivin. In addition to our dormitory rooms we offer three different double rooms: 1. Double Plus - 1 double bed, 1 private bathroom, linens and towels, and 1 fantastic seaside view. 2. Double Standard - 1 double bed (of the most clever convertible design in case you get tired of being so close to your travel partner), shared bathrooms, linens and towels, and if you are lucky the same fantastic view. 3. Twin - 2 single beds, linens and towels, and a better than average chance of making your friends back home quite jealous indeed. LOCATION: KEX is located in the center of Reykjavik, with a view across the sea to Mt. Esja across the bay. The old factory that houses KEX is also home to The Living Art Museum and studios of various artists, dancers, and fashion designers. KEX is within an easy walking distance to the city's interesting nightlife, restaurants, shopping streets, cultural attractions, and other points of interest in the city center. To reach those places a little further afield, the hostel is well connected to the city's public bus system. ... more   less
