“Comfy, coffee and cake”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2013

Previous reviews for Stofan had lodged and nested in the old grey matter, so when we were keen to escape the rain along the oldest street in Reyk, we made a bee line for here. Quite simply, it was a mixture of your front room, with added character and coffee. The service was charming as you have come to expect in Iceland. We had the standard coffee(free refills) with one slice of chic cake and one slice of apple and caramel cake. Both very good. Locals inhabit this place, doing business, student activity and general laptop chicanery(free WiFi, of course). What's not to like.

“Great Atmosphere, a Must Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

When my wife and I stayed at the Hotel Reykjavik Centrum we visited the Stofan Cafe. This is a gorgeous cafe with that homely grandmothers front room feel about the place. It seems you could sit here for hours drinking coffees and hot chocolate or trying one of the many gorgeous looking cakes, we tried the carrot cake which was simply delicious.
The cafe gets very busy particuarly if its cold outside so you might have to share your space with the very friendly Reykjavik locals who seem to spend hours there on their laptops making use of the free Wi-Fi available, playing chess or just chatting and who can blame them. We sat in one of the large wingback chairs when a young local couple sat next to us taking a break from shopping. They spoke good English and we chatted with them for ages and they felt it was the best cafe in Reykjavik, maybe Iceland, I couldn't have agree with more, I loved this place, it's a must do in Reykjavik.

“A Coffee shop as it should be”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

We were staying across from this coffee shop and it looked popular so we popped in. It was like wandering into someone's front room with armchairs and sofas in all areas(not just a few as in coffee chains). Coffee was good as were the cakes ( actually they very very good). There was also beer, wine and spirits on sale but we stayed with the coffee. A pleasant place to read and drink coffee with no pressure to finish or to buy more. Simple black coffee was available with free refills. Free wifi is an attraction and we were (comfortably) surrounded by people on laptops and smartphones. We joined in as it is cheaper than paying for hotel wi-fi. There was a very relaxed atmosphere with, at the weekend, locals playing chess, board games and reading newspapers. All this in the centre of Reykjavik. Pity there is nothing like it back home.

“Warm and home-like with a vintage cabin appeal.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013 via mobile

We stopped in on our last day here in Reykjavik. We actually read that Stofan was rated as the top coffee house of 2012 by the Reykjavik Grapevine. (Read this before you travel here) It was wet, cold, blustery, and to be honest a bit dreadful outside. As soon as we entered, a overwhelming sense of warmth and hominess invaded our souls. I ordered a chai latte with coconut and he ordered a cafe latte with vanilla. To top it off we shared a phenomenal slice of carrot cake. It hit the spot. Along with the romantic lighting, vintage repurposed furniture and Bjork playing over the sound system I can see why this shop was rated number one.
