“Great Accommodation”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

My family and I recently stayed at a Studio Apartment - Grettisborg, Reykjavik - Iceland. I can honestly say the vacation was superb! The Apartments are extremely well located and convenient to the center of Reykjavik and all stores, restaurants are within walking distance. We actually were booked originally on the 3rd floor (1 Bedroom Apartment) but were alerted prior to departing for our vacation that it would be occupied until 2 pm and our flight was landing at Reykjavik at 6:45 am! With two children in toe (2 yrs and 10 yrs) I was concerned about not being able to check in until the afternoon. Snaebjorn (owner) was extremely accommodating and understanding regarding our predicament and immediately switched us to the ground floor Studio Apartment. I pointed out that of course we had paid through Expedia for the larger 1 Bedroom and he immediately acknowledged this by discounting the price of the Apartments, which was very kind of him. All through the vacation he proved to be extremely helpful and constantly offered us local advice where to go i.e. Northern Lights spotting, cafes, Blue Lagoon trips etc. The Apartment itself was fantastic, very clean and had all self catering facilities such as cooker, refrigerator. There were also Laundry facilities present which proved very useful with two young children!

My wife was born and raised in Reykjavik, and we travel their several times a year. We usually stay in hotels or at homes, this was our first stay in an apartment style abode. Specific pros and cons:

Pros
1) The location is very good, just a block off the main dining and shopping street of Laugavegur and a short 5 minute walk to the central downtown area.
2) Well equipped rooms with a small kitchen and all the utensils - appliances needed. The Bonus shopping market is a few minutes walk away on Laugavegur. If you plan to do some home cooking, you won't be disappointed.
3) Comfortable mattresses and a sliding door to close off the bedroom from the kitchen-living area.
4) Great Icelandic water from the tap, and the hot water is heated glacier water, not the slightly sulfuric smelling geothermal version in some hotels.
5) Snaebjorn and Rosa are excellent, honest and helpful owners - hosts.
6) Free self serve laundry room outside.
7) Very fair rates (we paid around $135 US/nite)

Cons ( minor)
1) Parking - Iceland loves their 10am-6pm pay parking on most streets, and they have plenty of meter persons. Also, after 5pm the spots fill up so you may need to park 2-5 minutes away.
2) If you are on the middle or ground floor, you can hear some noise from floor above, not a big deal, but should be mentioned.

Overall, if you prefer cooking to room service (I do get tired of sodium loaded restaurant fare), I highly recommend the Grettisborg Apartments. The location, nice rooms and great ownership-service are well worth the reasonable rates.

My husband and I shared one of these apartments with my parents on a holiday trip. My husband and I had been to Iceland previously, but it was a first visit for my parents. As my mother has some arthritis issues, we wanted someplace close to the city center, but we also wanted a relatively quiet place to stay and were a bit concerned about staying right on Laugavegur, which can get noisy with the bar crowds at night. Grettisborg is tucked back off the road in the middle of a block, and the apartment windows face away from Laugavegur, so it was perfect for that, plus it's only a very short walk from Hlemmur bus station and around the corner from Sundhöllin swimming pool. The Bónus supermarket is also a block away, so we couldn't have been more perfectly situated.

The apartments themselves are small - only one bedroom - but the sectional sofa rearranges to make a second bed, and as we were mostly using it as a base while seeing the sights, it never felt too cramped. Having a (small) kitchen to cook most of our own meals also helped to keep our overall costs down. One of the things travel guides always say about Iceland is that it's an expensive place to visit, but food costs in the supermarkets weren't that much more than I'm used to paying here in New England, so we were able to eat well but also be fairly economical.

We also made use of the laundry room, which is free to guests and a real luxury in a town that doesn't quite do laundromats. We love Iceland and absolutely plan to keep going back, and I expect that we'll stay at Grettisborg again.

Room Tip: Apartments 5 & 6 are the only ones with balconies and are on the top floor, so nobody walking ar...

We stayed 3 nights in mid-October. Apartments are very well kept and the owners' aesthetic is pleasing. Nice quiet street only one street from popular Laugavegur. If you get a chance ask Snaebjorn to show you their creations which are truly impressive

The apartment is centrally located, is very good equiped, included wifi. Is in a quiet street within walking distance from the center, the hostess, Harpa, is lovely and help with a lot of information about restaurants, places to visit, excursions. Really she made us felt as at home. A perfect option to visit that amazing country.

We stayed here, since all hotels were apparently full; but as it turned out, delighted that we did. Very central but quiet, good wifi, clean, all we needed for a weekend break. No hesitation in recommending it.

We stayed at Grettisbourg Apartments over 3 nights in June (2 nights then 1 night later in the week). We were warmly welcomed and given a thorough overview of the apartment and local amenities. Rosa, Snaebjorn and Harper were delightful hosts. The quiet side street was appreciated as was the view from our apartment. The laundry facilities were much appreciated too! An easy walk into the main shopping / eatery area of Reykjavik made exploring this town very easy. The self-contained apartment, with wireless access, was spacious and plentiful for our needs. Being greeted with a heartfelt "welcome back" on our return visit would seem a small matter, but a real highlight.
