“A strange and unpleasant stay”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013

There was nothing at the Flying Viking to make staying there enjoyable. The place itself was difficult to find as there is no sign outside indicating it is a guesthouse. When we arrived there was no one working there so it was weird just going inside without checking in or something. It felt like trespassing. The bathroom got really wet from people showering and it just didn't seem clean enough. The guest room was not the cleanest either. The blinds were too thin so the sunlight was an annoying while trying to sleep. There was no TV or anything in the room except for a bed and small side table. The location was pretty good for walking to tourist places. The owner was nice but not around much.

We never got to meet our hosts, but they communicated with me by email for entry code and all info needed. Wifi was a little anemic, but easy to access. Location couldn't be beat, and for our first night, nice and quiet as we crashed with jet lag!

Agreed with marieatta_pman
We booked the studio apartment through Agoda, the register address is Laufasvegur 2, but when on arrival, the host took us to another address, we felt a bit puzzle because it seems someone was actually staying there, and totally diffenent with the photos on web site.
We satisfied the environment because of spacious, fully equipped, quiet and dark bedroom, just like lived in your neighborhood.

Room Tip: please noted the 3 differents address in diffenent web site e.g. agoda, booking.com, and trip adviso...

When you walk into a tiny room with two small beds, a shelf, and a thin curtain, you're either being incarcerated at the county jail or you've just checked into the Flying Viking. To be fair, the pricing was reasonable since its an expensive place, but good God even a thicker curtain would go a long way in a land where the sun never sets. The shared bathroom was horrid, with an exposed lightbulb and a hole in the ceiling. Something out of a horror movie. Lastly, the foyer smelled of wet dog.

While the location was good and the owners were friendly and responsive, this place is basically just a glorified hostel. I would not stay here again and strongly encourage others against it until they put more money into the property.

I made reservation in january for the guesthouse in the city, and prior to my arriving, the owner changed locations and assured me that the new place would be as nice or better than the old one.
when i got there, the new location was not ready for us. so Hans (the owner) took us to a different property that he owns in the city, a storefront style apartment.
i was a little skeptical at first, because someone was actually staying there temporarily - a friend or relative of his i guess, and he cleared them out, cleaned the place up and moved us in.
in the end it was a great choice for us - almost an airBnB type experience.

they were working feverishly on the new guesthouse, so i can only guess that it will be nice for this summer season. the location is great - very close to the city center and all the shops and restaurants etc...
I will comment that the customer service was great. Hans contacted me frequently prior to my stay and always answered emails promptly. He speaks flawless english so communication was not a problem. He was very friendly and seemed eager to please.

We went to this guesthouse on our first night of our trip. It is well located (Laufasvegur 2), and you can find free parking spots not that far from it. The owner was really kind and social. Explained us why the Guesthouse was called the Flying Viking :). This location is close, if not in the city center. Great nightlife, great sights, shops, and many other things to do. We spent a good night and left the day after. I would definitely come back to his guesthouse during my next visit.

I did a quick stop over on my return from Holland in May of this year. The bus operator FlyBus had a little trouble with the location but when I arrived I got a warm welcome from Hans the owner. They are in the process of renovation since they moved from a few doors down to the current location. While things were a little jumbled you could not ask for nicer hosts. Judging by how hard they were working I think everything will be first rate by the time of my next visit. The guesthouse is located just a couple blocks from the heart of town with easy walks to 871 Center, The National Museum, Maritime Museum, The Cultural House and colorful Bank Street. There are some great pubs and restaurants very close by. There is a kitchen area with stove, microwave, refrigerator and common space to sort yourself out in the morning and plan your day. There are a couple markets close by to get wonderful Icelandic breads, cheese, etc to start your day. Eating out lunch and dinner gives you a chance to sample Icelandic faire which is a blend of European flare and Nordic stamples. There is no reserved parking but you can park on the street overnight as long as you move by 10. Flying Viking will be my base for a longer stay next year to get out to some of the small towns, hotsprings, and historic sites. There is also good public transport. This is an excellent value for the money.

Room Tip: All the rooms are couple size. Ground floor rooms adjoin the common area so are a little less priva...
