“Affordable, Great Staff, Central Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2010

This was my first stay in a hostel so I'm not sure how it compares to others but since my husband and I usually stay at super low-budget hotels I would say this was fairly comparable and a whole lot cheaper! We booked a private room on the 4th floor. There were two full bathrooms, a kitchen plus a sitting room/balcony (all shared by floor). Only had one morning where there was a wait to use the bathrooms otherwise no issues there. Everything was very clean.

Room was tiny with three single beds plus a table and a few hooks. Since I look at a hotel room merely as a place to store my bag it worked. It is definitely VERY loud on Fri/Sat until the early morning hours (normally this doesn't bother me but if you're a light sleeper it would be difficult). We rented linen although wish we could have rented towels as well (oops, didn't know we needed to bring our own!). I do wish the room had its own mirror --with the shared bathrooms it would be nice to be able to partly get ready in your own room rather than hog up the bathroom space.

Location was perfect. It's on the main street in the town and very convenient to get to everything. We were able to park our rented car at a nearby church for free (less than 10 minute walk from church to hostel). Highly recommend the noodle shop near the church --noodles with beef was so good we ate there twice during our stay in the city.

The best part to me were the staff. Each person we interacted with was incredibly helpful and friendly. Everyone gave great advice and helped us out with any questions we had. They have connections to tour companies with pick up from the hostel as well which is a nice service. Internet for a fee in the lobby is also available.

Hi there and thank you for choosing Reykjavik Backpackers!

Due to our location we have got some noisy neighbors but we offer a free pair of earplugs if you don´t want to join the party.

You mentioned that you would have liked to hire a towel, and you can! And only for 290kr.

Thank you very much for your kind review.
We here at the Backpackers hostel hope we will meet again some day in the future!

Location can't be beat - you're right on the main strip of the city, less than a 5-min walk to the downtown and very easy to get to. The cheap grocery store ("Bonus") is less than 5-min walk away too - just turn right and it's not far down the same street... just look for the big pink pig and yellow signs.

The hostel's on the "party" street - it's pretty much surrounded by bars which can either be very good, or very bad depending on your plans for the night lol. Sound definitely carries so bring earplugs if you're not going to be joining the party.

Room was quite cramped - there was no wear to put our bags in the room so we just had our backpacks up against the wall.

Common areas were nice - I liked that each floor had a little area, as well as the large one downstairs.

Staff is very friendly and helpful - they'll call around for tours and such if you like. You can also rent bikes from the hostel which is nice.

As I am the first reviewer of this new hostel, I shall add a few more notes than normally expected.

This is in a downtown location with plenty of bars closeby and can be VERY noisy until 4 in the morning on Friday and Saturday nights - take earplugs unless of course you are out drinking too.

Some of the beds have too many beds , six where there should have been four, there is only a small shelf and a few wall hooks for most of your storage. Small lockers are available to rent for your valuables, will hold a laptop bag and a a few bottles.

The windows only have light venetian blinds and no curtains - take a sleeping mask in the summer as it is 24hour daylight, the venetain blinds cut out the view but not the light.

I booked the hostel online, however this booking put me on the 2nd of four floors which means that you are not permitted to use the kitchen ( but do not know in advance) , only people on the fourth floor are!

I did however use the kitchen to make sandwiches and tea , but be warned, the kitchen itself is poorly fitted out , a normal sized household fridge freezer, a smaller than household cooker, one socket for the toaster or sandwich maker or travel kettle provided. On my stay in June 2010, there were only two saucepans and four cups and one table for four ( five at a push) people.

I have marked it as average by world standards and it will easily suffice for your stay, but if they spend a bit of money or curtains and increasing the kitchen area, they will easily have a very good hostel, the staff are first class.

PS 1 :- Good Jazz at the Rosenberg 100 metres away around a corner., see if the Robin Nolan trio is on , they are a frequent artist.
PS2 The flybus will take you to the hostel for a small supplement ( less than two euros) and drop you off about twenty metres away. You have to ask for this drop-off at Keflavik airport when you buy your bus ticket.
PS3 Twenty metres away is a tasty little bakery for bread and cakes.
PS4 The pharmacy five mins away sells earplugs and sleeping masks.
PS5 Small swimming and thermal pool nearby - can hire towels there too.
