Stay Apartments Grettisgata

About these appartments especifically I can´t say much because although I had reserved for these appartments when we got there and after 10 minutes wasted on what might be our room and how to enter (because there´s no receptionist "that´s why we cut costs!"), it was only after I read a sign with a phone number to call and a phone in the "lobby" free of charge to use that on the other side they told us they were overbooked and we´d be going to Einholt appartments. Off to Einholt we were in our rented car (although they offered a free taxi) and after arriving we found a key on a piece of paper saying that after all we wouldn´t be staying at Einholt but across the street. All in all, and after this small adventure, i must say we got the winning end of the deal because the appartment (kalli´s appartments) were just splendid. Excellent design, spacious, clean, luminous. Although our problem was efficiently resolved by the owner and operator of the Grettisgata appartments, I think he should have been more careful with the overbooking detail because if I really wanted to stay where the movida was, Grettisgata is it, but the silence of the outskirts was good and the appartment even better.

Have been staying in Grettisgata Apartments for 5 days in March 2012 and have found this place very nice and amoust ideal in terms "location\rooms quality\cost" relation.

Here is my short summary:

I'll begin with advantages:

1) The location of the house is very fortunate: it is not on the central avenue of the city (Laugavegur), but on the next street from it. Which means, that the boisterous crowd of tourists will not bother you on evenings, but it is about 5-7 minutes by feet to reach the core of the city - where there are pubs and shops and all such stuff. Also the 7\11 shop is near.

2) The apartment itself was not as big, but for my short business trip it was fine enough. The kitchen allows you to make anything you want to cook - there are all necessary tools. There is an iron and ironing board, so you can easily smooth your wear before going to a meeting. There was also an option to use washing machine and drying machine as well, but I didn't have to use it. The interier had nice modern design without extravagances.

3) The operator (and owner) of the place was very easily reachable by the local phone from the lobby and once I needed his presence - he arrived in time. The wi-fi internet was free to use as well as the computer in the lobby.

4) The price is very nice for such location and room, in comparison with other nearest apartments I found Grettisgata Apartments the most advantageous. There were cheaper proposals, but with worse other conditions. Also they make discounts: if you're paying in cash it is 5% and if you're a returning customer it's 10% off.

Small disadvantages were:

1) The sound proffing was not enough sometimes in the morning, when the garbage truck was collecting the trash containers in the street. But that was one or two times, all other time it was quiet.

2) When they changed the towels (once each 2 days) they didn't renew the trash bags. But it wasn't a real problem, as you can throw out the used bag into the trash container on the street and use your own new bag then.

We stayed at Grettisgata Apartments in late May 2011 in a 1 bedroom apartment. The check-in process is all via email and we picked up our keys in the little lobby. We are fine with self-service, but if you want a concierge, this is not the place for you. The location was great, just a short walk to all the sites. It's one street up from the main shopping street. There's a Bonus supermarket around the block as well (although the opening hours of Bonus are not very convienent!). The managers brought over a baby crib for us to use, which was great. The kitchen is stocked with basics and has a 2 burner stove, a microwave, electric kettle and small refrigerator. The bedroom was a nice size and fit the standard 2-twin beds pushed together and a portable crib very well. The bathroom is very small, but servicable. I only have 2 complaints about the place - the wi-fi was broken when we were there and either the dryer was broken or nobody seemed to know how to make it work. Other than those two issues, we had a great stay! The price cannot be beat and it was a perfect set up for a couple traveling with a baby.

Stayed in "Grettisgata Apartments" (43 Grettisgata). Same owner owns "Stay Apartments" i.e. 3 individual apts in Reykjavik (Einholt 2, Bolholt 6 and Grettisgata 43). Grettisgata is the closest to downtown. Booked in advance a 1 bedroom apt that was advertised to sleep 4 (i.e. 2 children on pull out couch).
We met NO one during our stay. They advertise 'lobby staff' during published hours but when we arrived allbeit later in the evening there was only a buzzer (at the back, lower level, which only said "Call"). Then 'someone' let us in to pick up our keys that were left with our name on a table. We also did not see anyone at 10 am in the morning when we left our keys to 'check out'.
The apartment #302 was up a very steep and narrow stairway which was musty smelling. The apt was much too small for 4 people, Maybe OK for 2 people. They advertise 'a fully equipped kitchen', it was NOT so. It had a small (bar) fridge, 2 hotplate like burners for the stove, no oven, a very small microwave, and a sink will little counterspace and few cupboards. I would be a 'kitchenette' at best. You would not want to cook a dinner in this space but it was fine for breakfast. The kitchen table was also on the small side.
The TV recieved 4 channels and none of them were at all clear. No 'free' telephone at least in our room, maybe in the 'lobby'. There was no "Balcony with a view". When you opened the bedroom door (half-way) it always hit the corner of the bed. The pictures on their website may represent an apartment they 'may' have available but what stayed in did not much resemble those advertised.
WIFI worked well. We did not use the laundry or parking. Beds in the bedroom were OK. The pull out couch was of an 'unusual' design.
Although inexpensive I would not recommend this apartment.
