Barbara is, along with its neighbour downstairs, Trúnó Gay Cafe & Bar, the only gay bar in Iceland. Iceland is a very open minded country, so the need for gay bars isn't as significant as in other cities - LGBT travellers should feel comfortable at most bars/nightclubs. Nonetheless, Barbara offers a good place to go for a fun night of drinks and dancing, in a comfortable environment.
The dance floor is fairly spacious, however on the Saturday night we went the bar filled up by 12 and the place was packed. The DJ played a mix of the latest pop hits, as well as what I think were Icelandic pop, which made the local crowd go crazy. The drinks are standard priced for Iceland ( a bit more than other countries, but really not as bad as I expected). The crowd was a good mix of locals, tourists, young and old, men and women.
We had a fun night, and recommend LGBT travellers check it out. Although, as I said, Reykjavik is a pretty safe city and don't be afraid to check out other "non-gay" bars as well.
