Owner description: Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland's premier adventure tour operator. The company was established in 1994 by four young outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for nature, travel and environmental advocacy. These pioneers aimed to introduce the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Solheimajokull glacier. Hiking, backpacking and other adventures and expeditions in Iceland and Greenland soon followed. Today, Icelandic Mountain Guides offers adventure tours ranging from short day tours to longer multi-day expeditions in the great outdoors in both summer and winter. So whether it is the exploration of the icescapes of glaciers and ice caves, crossing of impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or hiking in fascinating valleys, our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience.

Just spent 11 days on the most amazing adventure with Icelandic Mountain Guides. Part one was the Laugavegur Trek, 5 days of hiking from hut to hut with our guide Greta. The scenery was so beautiful and Greta was an amazing guide, cooking and watching out for 15 of us. Her and her husband did an excellent job of making sure all of our food and necessities were transported between huts.

Part two started with a flight to Kulusuk, Greenland. This is where the adventure part started to get real. As we walked away from the airport towards the small village, we were greeted by howling sled dogs and colorful houses. Here you start to realize you're in a whole different culture. This part of the trip involved quite a bit of labor as your gear is transported between campsites by boat. Luckily the nine of us in our group were always ready to jump in and get things moved around so camp could be setup quickly and efficiently.
Our guide Thora was awesome. You could really see her passion for Greenland and that she loved every bit of her job. Greenland is very rugged and untouched, and Thora had no problems leading us over all the different types of terrain. The hiking was very challenging and also very rewarding at the end of the long days. You will not see another person for the entire time you are hiking and camping.

We were also lucky to meet some other members of the Icelandic Mountain Guides team while in Greenland. This company is top notch and based on all my experiences, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for adventure travel while in Iceland or Greenland.

Thank you for this review, we really appreciate all of your very kind words. Glad you liked to hike the stunning Laugavegur Trek with Greta, seems like she took really good care of you!

It is true that in Greenland you experience a completely different culture and nice to hear that you could appreciatethat and also the hikes in Greenland! As you can tell from Thora's enthusiasm, our guides are very passionate about what they do.

It was a pleasure to create your adventure, so thank you for choosing us, and we hope we might see you again another time.

Take very good care, and best wishes from all of us here at Icelandic Mountain Guides.

My wife and I participated in the two hours walk on Svinafellsjokull Glacier Tongue in Skaftafell National Park. Everything was well organized and our guide was both friendly and able to explain a lot about the glacier.
Nevertheless as the price for the tour is not exactly cheap we would have expected a little bit more. From our perspective at least two or three different difficulty levels should be offered. Although my wife was pregnant the tour was really way to easy for her, too. Our group was quite slow (due to small kids and retirees) and therefore our tour on the glacier itself was quite short.
All in all the tour was ok but nothing more. Next time we will probably invest our money in another activity.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for sharing your glacier walk experience with us on Svínafellsjökull glacier. It is great to hear that you enjoyed learning about the glacier from your guide. We appreciate you giving us feedback about the difficulty level for the glacier walk you went on. That tour is rated as "easy" on our site because it gives people of different fitness levels a chance to experience being on a glacier. However, we have other glacier tours that have a higher level of difficulty and we are more than happy to assist you in choosing one that is more challenging. Thanks again for the review and we hope we get the opportunity to help you find a more challenging activity next time.

We had a great time during our combined horses and glacier tour. Luckily, our family of five was the only group booked on that day and ended up with a private tour for the glacier walk. After a trail ride with Eld Hestar stables and lunch, we were picked up by our guide, Marta. She not only drove and guided our glacier hike, but was also a very informative tour guide on history and geology along the way to ours destination. The weather was sporadically rainy and cold, as expected, and Marta was great about checking in with everyone to make sure we were safe and comfortable. Crampons and ice axes were provided, and they had extra rain gear available. Don't forget to bring gloves. The tour and views were spectacular and we felt very lucky to experience this natural phenomenon up close.

Thank you for sharing your experience! We are glad to hear that you and your family liked the Horses and Glacier Tour. Some times our customers get lucky and get a private tour since our groups are pretty small. Great to hear that Marta took good care of you on the tour!

Best regards

We went on the volcano and glacier walk with Kristjan and it was amazing because of our awesome tour guide. Kristjan was funny, knowledgeable and just a great guy. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour with him. We started by visiting the E15 volcano which I was finally able to pronounce by the end of the trip- thanks for putting up with my terrible attempts, Kristjan! Then we visited the waterfalls (Glufrabui and Seljallandsfoss). There was plenty of time to walk around and explore. I would recommend wearing your waterproof gear to get a good shot of Glufrabui!

Then we hiked on the glacier which was probably the coolest experience ever. Kristjan customized the trip for us and we were able to visit the black sand beach with no one on it (absolutely breath taking) and one of the waterfalls that wasn't on our list. I would absolutely recommend taking this tour and if you can request Kristjan, all the better!

Thank Diane J

What an experience of a lifetime.. Our wonderful guide Thomas took through the glaciers with concern for our safety and at the same time teaching us about this amazing chunks of ice that are so overwhelming in their beauty. We learned techniques on how to go up and down those ice hills - ,, he challenged the group with ice climbing - after 6 hours we came home exhausted but thrilled. -
