Owner description: Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland's premier adventure tour operator. The company was established in 1994 by four young outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for nature, travel and environmental advocacy. These pioneers aimed to introduce the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Solheimajokull glacier. Hiking, backpacking and other adventures and expeditions in Iceland and Greenland soon followed. Today, Icelandic Mountain Guides offers adventure tours ranging from short day tours to longer multi-day expeditions in the great outdoors in both summer and winter. So whether it is the exploration of the icescapes of glaciers and ice caves, crossing of impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or hiking in fascinating valleys, our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience.

My wife and I just completed the Icelandic Mountain Guides 6 day cross country ski tour, based at the hut in Landmannalaugar (February, 2015). What a fantastic trip! Our guide Maxime was incredible, we cannot say enough about him or his knowledge of everything Icelandic. The scenery could not be beat and the whole experience was really, really special. Even had one crystal clear night where the Northern Lights filled the sky. Wow.

My wife and I very much enjoyed this tour. Icelandic Mountain Guides picked us up at our hotel approximately 11:30 in the morning. Our first stop was at an eatery to grab a quick bite to eat and be fitted for crampons to dig into the ice. It is very important to wear good boots for this tour. Do not expect to wear athletic shoes and expect the crampons to attach to your athletic shoe properly. Our next stop was at the Skogafoss waterfall. You can walk up very close to the base of the waterfall and get excellent photos. However, expect to get very wet from the water spray. It was well worth it. Our next stop was the Myrdalsjokull glacier for our hike. We put on our Crampons and we were each given a hiking stick/axe. The hiking sticks/axe were used more for photos than for maintaining our balance hiking up the glacier. We started by walking across a frozen lake and then up the glacier. The crampons did a great job digging into the ice. Slipping on the ice was never a concern. We were on the glacier over 2 hours. The views were incredible. It stopped snowing, the clouds parted and bright blue skies covered us throughout our hike. It is also important to wear proper clothing. I wore long underwear, blue Jeans, rain pants, wool socks, hiking boots, insulated flannel shirt, heavy winter coat, head beanie and a single glove for my left hand. I did not wear a glove on my right hand since I needed it free to take pictures. I was never cold during the hike. Some people wore snow pants. I believe that was not necessary. Our next stop was at Anna's, a local restaurant for a traditional Icelandic dinner. Our tour ended with attempting to find the Northern Lights enroute back to Reykjavik. Unfortunately the cloud cover was not cooperating. I strongly encourage people to experience this hike. It was one of the highlights of our vacation to Iceland.

We recently went on a glacier walk and northern lights tour with Icelandic Mountain Guides (Feb. 2015). Our guide, Thorsten, was fantastic and the tour itself was exceptional. We saw beautiful waterfalls, hiked for a couple hours on the glacier, ate a wonderful dinner at Hotel Anna, and even saw the Northern Lights - all during less than ideal weather conditions. It was February, after all. Throughout the entire day, Thorsten was patient, informative, funny, helpful, and most importantly safety oriented.

I can't wait to go back to Iceland in the summer sometime and will absolutely book with Icelandic Mountain Guides again.

Thomas, our guide, was knowledgable, patient and very helpful. This was such a wonderful day, the weather cleared from blizzards as we drove there to blue skies and crisp clean Iceland air. Safety was paramount but it was a relatively easy hike and the only spoiler which is not the hiking company's fault was that the Cafe hasnt opened yet, so it was a 10 min drive to the closest loo. This is at a beautiful waterfall with a great cafe, so almost worth the wait!
