Owner description: Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland's premier adventure tour operator. For 20 years we have been in continuous operation of offering adventures in the wilderness of Iceland and Greenland. The company was established in 1994 by four young outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for nature, travel and environmental advocacy. These pioneers aimed to introduce the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Solheimajokull. Hiking, backpacking and other adventures and expeditions in Iceland and Greenland soon followed. Today, Icelandic Mountain Guides is a company that offers adventure tours ranging from short day tours to longer multi-day expeditions in the great outdoors in both summer and winter. So whether it is the exploration of the icescapes of glaciers, crossing of impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or hiking in fascinating valleys, our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience.

“Beautiful day...”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Met our day guide A'sgeir right on time in the lobby of our hotel. His Nissan Patrol was clean and ready to go. The whole caravan of 4X's was on time. Some people didn't show and they made a valiant effort to find them - which the rest of us understood. They waited approx. 15 mins which we all thought was fair. Our vehicle ended two short and have to say we weren't disappointed my their loss - it'd would have been a tight ride. A'sgeir was a wealth of info and very friendly and blunt. Beautiful drive the off roading was great. The scenery was extraordinary. The glacier walk was very easy for us oldsters but wonderful. Definitely a great way to spend our day.

We did the "Ice and Fire" tour with Mountain guides. It was a fantastic tour. The guide was very friendly and funny. He took us to all the places and gave us awesome explanations and guide to all the places.

I highly recommend them.

“Golden Circle and Northern Lights Tour”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

This was a wonderful tour with lots of detailed information provided by our very informed guide, Dana Jezcova. It was well organized; the group was small; interesting information was provided; and it included a delicious dinner. Strongly recommend this tour company and Dana.

“Glacier Walk and Northern Lights tour”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

It's too late to do this tour now (no Northern Lights now). However, if you are planning to go to Iceland next winter, I would do this tour. It's 13hours, but believe it or not it goes by fast. Our guide Jon (local), very friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights, but be aware that it's all down to luck and timing. The NL hadn't been seen for almost a week due to weather. Clear skies are key and in Iceland the weather changes every 5 minutes!

“Well-planned tours”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

We did two tours with this company: Northern Lights and Walk Through Fire and Ice. We were really pleased at how well-paced and organized they were. However, both of our guides were only so-so.

We didn't see any northern lights on our first tour, but our guides really tried hard to find them for us. Still, they showed us a good time and drove by some other attractions when it became clear that it was just too cloudy for northern lights. The beach was beautiful and the lobster meal delicious (and I had the vegetarian option which was also really good). Our driver, Hilda, was fairly knowledgeable but not very outgoing or friendly. Maybe this is a cultural difference, but I expect guides to be the life of the party: making conversation, entertaining the group, and brimming over with stories. At dinner the two guides talked with each other much more than with the guests. The driver/guide for the other Jeep, though, was a really fun guy. I wish we had been in his car! Note that the restaurant is the only indoor bathroom option for the entire night.

The Fire and Ice tour got us to some amazing locations: a gorgeous valley with a warm stream and the awesome glacier. It's worth having a guide for these two hikes (and you really should for safety's sake on the glacier). The valley hike had some steep and rocky points, but it was a slow pace. The glacier hike was not strenuous at all and I could have been out there for longer. We also had short stops at a couple of waterfalls and at a cafe/indoor mall for lunch. The day was well-paced with pit stops and pretty sights. Do note that this tour is about 10 hours long but you'll spend half of that driving. Our two hiking stops were maybe two hours each. Our guide, Stefan, was very smart and safety-conscious, but again, not especially bubbly.
