Owner description: Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland's premier adventure tour operator. For over 20 years we have been in continuous operation of offering adventures in the wilderness of Iceland and Greenland. The company was established in 1994 by four young mountain and outdoor enthusiasts and pioneers whose aim was to introduce the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Solheimajokull. Hiking, backpacking and other adventures and expeditions in Iceland and Greenland soon followed. Today Icelandic Mountain Guides is a company that offers adventure tours ranging from short day tours to longer multi-day expeditions in the great outdoors in both summer and winter. So whether it is the exploration of the icescapes of glaciers, crossing of impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or hiking in fascinating valleys, our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience.

“Well-planned tours”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

We did two tours with this company: Northern Lights and Walk Through Fire and Ice. We were really pleased at how well-paced and organized they were. However, both of our guides were only so-so.

We didn't see any northern lights on our first tour, but our guides really tried hard to find them for us. Still, they showed us a good time and drove by some other attractions when it became clear that it was just too cloudy for northern lights. The beach was beautiful and the lobster meal delicious (and I had the vegetarian option which was also really good). Our driver, Hilda, was fairly knowledgeable but not very outgoing or friendly. Maybe this is a cultural difference, but I expect guides to be the life of the party: making conversation, entertaining the group, and brimming over with stories. At dinner the two guides talked with each other much more than with the guests. The driver/guide for the other Jeep, though, was a really fun guy. I wish we had been in his car! Note that the restaurant is the only indoor bathroom option for the entire night.

The Fire and Ice tour got us to some amazing locations: a gorgeous valley with a warm stream and the awesome glacier. It's worth having a guide for these two hikes (and you really should for safety's sake on the glacier). The valley hike had some steep and rocky points, but it was a slow pace. The glacier hike was not strenuous at all and I could have been out there for longer. We also had short stops at a couple of waterfalls and at a cafe/indoor mall for lunch. The day was well-paced with pit stops and pretty sights. Do note that this tour is about 10 hours long but you'll spend half of that driving. Our two hiking stops were maybe two hours each. Our guide, Stefan, was very smart and safety-conscious, but again, not especially bubbly.

“Ask for Jon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2013

My husband and I went on the Golden Circle and Northern Lights tour, and we had the best time! Jon was especially helpful and spent individual time with every couple and told us stories and pointed out interesting things. He even kept us out until 1:30am and drove to several places so we could experience the northern lights. He went above and beyond for us.

“Volcano and Glacier Walk day tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

Iceland overall was fantastic, easy to drive and see on your own, but to see the Volcanoes and Glaciers the right way, taking the day tour with Icelandinc Mountain Guides was the best decision. The cars are five passenger jeeps outfitted for off road driving, our guide was very knowledgeable and a lot of fun, and the whole day attractions were great, no stops at souvenir shops or boring stuff which was great.
The Glacier walk was not challenging and easy for all ages and the guide was very nice

“Unique experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

We did the 'Blue Ice Experience' - where we got to hike around on Svinafellsjokull Glacier. The guide was great, the tour was amazing, and overall I would definitely recommend. We got lucky in that the weather was perfect - blue skies, sunshine - so I am sure this helped with my experience.

We did the walk through fire and ice tour, apart from being a very tiring day it was exhilarating, fascinating, beautiful and interesting. Our guide was nothing short of perfect, safety was paramount and a thoroughly good day was had by all!! He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and funny. Thanks IMG!!
